I did. It's pretty overrated, mediocre russian Fallout clone without balance. High burst is king, literally no sense to go any other route, skill checks are way too high on too early parts of the game, full of russian memes and references nobody else understand, pre-last fight had to be nerfed by devs as nobody could survive second turn due to mentioned burst mechanic and enemies were too much of bullet sponges to die in single turn. And yes, I finished it. 6/10 game in my opinion.
Aimed shot sniper becomes viable later on but yeah your points are true.
Still an enjoyable game due to lack of competition for isometric fallout-like games.

there's literally dozens of major mods, most of which is better than the original game

ATOM RPG is 5/10 AT BEST which is SHAT ON by Planet Alcatraz in terms of gameplay, graphics, overall aesthetics and even fricking quality of life.
ATOM RPG: Trudograd, however, is pretty good: a solid 7/10. I even liked the stupid card minigame.
If you want a good Fallout clone, just learn Russian and play Fallout: Sonora instead and Planet Alcatraz 2, too.
Yeah Trudograd is the superior offering, they learned from the first one - which is encouraging nowadays.
I guess they're doing a fantasy IP, now. Not sure about all that, but ARPG and Trudo both scratch the classic Fallout itch for me.

Early on you literally can't use guns at all because no ammo or it's stpid expensive so you are forced to waste points on melee. Later on firearms are reiqured or you simply within seconds.
all i remember about this game is the RLM pizzagate quest, is playing solo viable or do you need the companions? and are there any bad builds to avoid

Solo is hard but possible.
If you get a decent automatic weapon and a scoped one you can win most fights easily. But at the start where you are a bum with a rusty revolver and a knife you will be outnumbered and outgunned. Also there's a shitton of loot to carry so you need a packmule until you find a good backpack.
Speechcraft and personality are not a meme in this, they are pretty mandatory for a lot of quests, so have at least 120 and 7 respecivley.
Burst assault rifles will carry you through the entire game, maybe some throwing skill to toss nades for crowds

I know it has a workshop but Unity can sometimes mean the game is locked down tighter than that chastity device in the Mel Brooks Robin Hood movie.

There are quest mods and shit (and one of the mods adds so much QoL shit it's a requirement to play this shit at all), so it's not any less moddable than Fallout.
I haven't played ATOM but I have backed Swordhaven on kickstarter because it looked interesting
I'm currently stuck o the Lenin statue quest.
On the one side i don't want to kill the mutants since they are the ones that want to melt the statue and i'm all for it, but on the other they also stand in my way of getting the only functioning vehicle in the game and i am not paying them 120,000 for something that i can get at the expense of a few bullets and health items.
