Sonic is an interesting case where the Sonic-only parts of SA1/2 actually make for a decent transition to 3D, at least when considering the tech the devs were working with, it's everything else that drags those games down.

Then Sonic Team followed them up with games that were noticeably worse, demonstrating that they learned absolutely nothing.

tbh I beat it recently and don't understand the complaints. It's basically a classicvania in 3D and it does it well enough.

my literal one complaint is that I got stuck trying to trigger the rose garden sequence
      that was some bullshit

Oh god so I'm not the only one who got stuck on that. I still have no idea what triggers that scene to this day, and would just keep doing random bullshit all around the villa until it eventually happens.

if you didn't play as a guy with a whip you didn't play a castlevania game

so castlevania 64 is a castlevania game?

The problem is exactly that its a classicvania, so many people who play it are bad at it and then complain.

I remember playing Virtua Fighter at an arcade and thinking it looked amazing, but it was so much slower than Street Fighter II Turbo. When you jumped, it was like you were underwater. Pretty much all first generation 3D fighters were like this.

This was almost good. It's only issues are wonky controls, if it were modernized just a bit they would be great. Still more fun than the DMC clones on the PS2

I consider Legacy of Darkness to be a top tier platformer. I played it for the first time 3 years ago and it was a real treat.

It's only bad because it's sandwiched between Igavanias and the 2D ones which are mostly unique and consistently good games that are still worth playing even after the formula got used in a lot of games while this is just an ok title in a sea of ok N64 titles (CVIII is still an amazing game relative to other NES games for example).

Also I'm biased because it's just not as interesting as what Castlevania would've been in 3D if the original plan for SoTN was pulled off, as far as I'm concerned it wouldn't be too different from what the dungeons in Zelda were doing but being released much earlier would've been a huge deal, too bad the PS1 didn't even have analog sticks at the time.

Controls are clunky but once you get used to them it's a decent game.

      And this.

Devs were in a bit of a shit situation, if you didn't transition to 3D no one would touch your game because it was "old" 2D shit, but transitioning to 3D resulted in some truly awful fricking games.

Literally all of them. No such thing as a franchise that went from 2D to 3D without losing its soul or some essential property.

Final Fantasy. Yes, yes muh opera scene and muh characters coming back to life on some deus ex machina shit. Whatever, they're good and all. Great even, but FFVII is full of soul while retaining and adding much to the series' identity and you're a contrarian homosexual if you think it's not doing something phenomenal.

despite the contrarian homosexuals who pretend it's a good game it's the only historical nintendo franchise that completely bungled its transition to 3D and the franchise never truly recovered since then

Yeah well you’re right, you stupid Black person. How’s that for being contrarian?

I don't think it's as good as what came before or after but I don't get why it's gotten a bad reputation. The worst I can say is that it's stretched a bit too thin for content and that nitroglycerin section is just annoying.

    >Game series that had rough transitions to 3D

The only issue I ever really had With Castlevania 64 were a few platforming moments. But otherwise, I think it is a better game than most people give it credit for being. Oddly I liked this one more than Legacy of Darkness. I played both on real hardware. I know I have completed Castlevania 64, but never Legacy of Darkness.

Castlevania 64 is STILL my favourite CV game and the fact that they refuse to acknowledge let alone rerelease it is a travesty. I can and have emulated it, but I would pay good money for them to do a port.
I remember playing it as a kid and getting the shit scared out of me. And some of the stuff it does (day night cycles! vampire status effect! multiple ending conditions!) is still cool.

If you want a game that had a rough 3D transition, look no further than fricking Lemmings 3D. Barely playable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqPKF9D993w
