Nucars are awful. If you really need a car, get one before 2012, since every car made after 2012 has GPS tracking built in.

If you want to get something older, get a preused car/truck/van before 2020 since you have the least amount of chances of being gay

Clear examples of rent seeking. Even when products are made better, even if you buy all the components to work it a certain way, their R&D, their innovations will always be to maximize profit.

People have been modifying their cars forever. Only difference now is people are probably gonna start software mods and car companies are gonna be pissed and scream how it voids the warranty or how "dangerously unsafe it is to drive a modded car"

Bypassing the software is a DMCA violation, while modifying the physical item you own is explicitly legal. It's half the reason they make wifi enabled """smart""" versions of things that have no use for it.

I didn't even know there was such thing as a "smart" BBQ, but my parents have a smart kettle that heats the water to precise temperatures for what ever kind of drink they are making.

Instant Coffee for example (The nice aussie stuff) needs to be heated to just under boiling. It does actually make a noticeable difference.

I would guess the BBQ has the same kind of presets?

        Anonymous

        >Now, you may be asking, why on earth would you want a Wi-Fi-controlled barbecue? We asked ourselves the same question when we began our review a month or so ago. But two weeks in, we started wondering if we could ever go back to one without it.
        >Being able to sit inside chatting with your friends and family while simultaneously controlling your barbecue via your mobile phone – keeping an eye on the progress of the meat (or vegetables), adjusting the temperature and the amount of smoke – well it’s a big improvement on dashing outside to check on the barbecue so often that you end up barely talking to anyone and reeking of smoke.

They also cite a specific use case where they were able to smoke their meats very slowly because they were currently in an area with a total fire ban.

tl'dr: hurrr we smoke our meats and we need an app to check them because leaving a social gathering for 20 seconds to check is too much for our fragile egos.

I used to date a Stacey and have to attend these social gatherings. These frickers can't get enough of just standing around in their Polo shirts and talking about absolutely nothing and how they are better than everyone else. It really gets their dicks hard and it's no wonder everyone of their wifes just sit at the table eyefricking everyone who isn't a chode.

You think the guy in this picture is a chad? Wrong. His wife fricking hates him. His wifes mother fricking hates him. Women that are looking for social status and money are revolted by him. The only person who actually likes him is his wifes dad and only because they stand around bbqs talking about how asani is better than heinakan and because he can be a +1 to drive the extra car to the classic car club.

Health insurance on your pets actually sounds like a wise use of money, because if anything happens to them, you'd pay every penny you have to save them.
Unfortunately, it's one of the many ecnomies that are only available to the middle class and above. You need to have enough money to pay for insurance to avoid having to pay thousands you can't afford later.

              Anonymous

Pet insurance doesn't work like that unfortunately. It's reimbursements. You still need to pony up the full amount up front then file a claim to, in my companies case, get 90% of the money back.

I still have it because my cat has health issues, is on a special dietary food that is $60 a bag and takes a daily thyroid medication.

never said pets have no value, i said that if you're at the point of bemoaning affording pet insurance for giving a cat daily thyroid medication and medically formulated food, maybe you should reconsider the primacy your assigning to it versus other things in life

we don't really own pets for any other purpose than companionship anymore. if i had a cat for hunting rats i'd agree, that's an expendable tool, but my cat is my friend, whom i love dearly.

Poor people just don't get attached to their pets, don't view them as their children and don't mind losing one
You know only 100 years ago it wasn't shocking to lose a few children before they reached adulthood

If you're trying to say we've lost perspective on pet ownership broadly in the West, agreed. If you're saying people didn't even value the lives of children because they died more often, you're way wrong. This notion has been debunked time and time again; people were devastated by losing so many children, even young, and there were many cultural practices that evolved to try to help them cope.

        fricking why

i've had to take them in for surgery that i couldn't afford at the time, they said if i paid for this healthcare for 2 years it'd be paid off. it's whatever, i actually used it for checkups and other times when they were babies and i needed to take them in but it's been 2 years already so i'll probably cancel it.

Pet insurance is a scam, you'll pay every month then when it comes time to cover you they'll reimburse you maybe $500.

Capitalism is the solution to this problem. A company can come along and start producing cheap consumer friendly products to compete, but the issue is the government regulations that prevent such a business model from being financially viable.

        Anonymous

government regulations developed in parallel to the market but keep thinking they're somehow antagonistic and separate phenomena

          Anonymous

Government regulations come about in response to the market, not at the same time. Car companies did thing A to make cheap cool cars, government bans it, car companies come up with thing B in response, government regulates it, etc.

Now all companies are locked out of doing thing A and B etc. to try and compete in the market.

            Anonymous

it's not a matter of who came first. also, there's no regulatory necessity for companies to gatekeep basic features on cars, that is a market problem.

No, that's an acceptable time to speed up for a minute, you just cant maintain that speed. Traffic cops can be understanding of that, but now states are starting to install mobile speed cams on highways to suck more money out of us.
The upside of those speedcams is that politicians are less likely to approve speed inhibitors, because that will kill the golden goose. But that would be federal legislation, while cams are on the state or municipal level, so it might still happen if we're not careful and don't pay attention.

That does not mean you are "allowed to do it". The law comes down to what is written on the book and you will probably get infringements or worse, get pulled over and shot by a jumpy glowBlack person.

That's about to change, assuming whatshisname's does manage to bring GaaS to the EU courts attention. Best part is that he doesn't even have to win a case, because the only possible outcomes are that publishers either release an end of service update that makes shit playable offline, OR they explain to a judge how you don't actually own the game you bought.

Only the modern surveillance state with its ever increasing AIML, predictive analytics and sensor suites can bring true tyranny

Capitalism means you can say "frick this", drop AAA games and stick to $1 indie games or free itch.io games, or go buy into a Kickstarter/Patreon/whatever for things you like instead of govt-approved games costing some govt-approved price, it doesn't mean MONEYMONEYMONEY INFINITEGROWTHFOREVER!!!1! like those commies on Discord believe.

It's become a big part of every industry. It's no longer sufficient to sell a good product and make a hefty profit. The only way to keep stonks rising is to milk the customer with recurring costs. It's the reason why no cell phones have replaceable batteries anymore. They'd rather have you buy a new phone every year or two. A number of software products that were once just a single purchase now require monthly fees. Gaming is just doing the same thing all the other industries are doing.
