Just see what the game is speaking to and it's audience. You can tell if a game is meant to be for your or not very easily to see who it's being marketed towards. Ganker likes to hate on trailers but they tell me what the DEVELOPERS think I want. And them opening it with these abilities and not the environment/atmosphere/bosses shows me that we aren't seeing eye to eye.

I'm literally in the final stages of Dread as we speak, going for the 100% before the big bad boss. It's insanely fun: challenging even to veterans of the series, a healthy amount of good puzzles, distinct areas and environments, great animations, and the sound design of the E.M.M.I. rooms are beyond reproach. The order in which you receive upgrades is slightly non-traditional but makes sense in the game's context.
The only real criticism is that the boss variety drops off severely in the latter half of the game. The first few bosses are good (with at least one surprising return), but you eventually start fighting the same guy over and over again, with the game only mixing it up by having you fight two of him at once. The last two E.M.M.I. rooms kind of drag on and become bullshit, but YMMV.
I don't want to spoil anything, but there is a limited amount of dialogue at the very midpoint of the game — a 2min exposition dump. I thought it was handled tastefully in the broader context of the lore. It's a good story that doesn't get in its own way.

(In it's defense, I think I got the wrong trailer, it says overview so maybe it's something I'm not aware of).
You forgot to mention that it's insultingly linear. Cutting off your backtracking is a cardinal sin that no metroidvania should ever commit. I didn't like the gameplay/platforming either and I hated all the E.M.M.I encounters. I really don't get the praise for the game, I'd much rather have spent my time on your average indie metroidvania.

Great atmosphere. The core gameplay is good, but it has a completely fricked up game balance (Argenta and Cassia break the game in half). The first 2 acts are great, act 3 is wiener and ball torture, acts 4 and 5 feel unfinished. The game is a buggy mess. Characters range from great to "what the frick were they thinking". Great for roleplaying as a dogmatic. Overall a 7/10 game, maybe 8/10 once they iron out the bugs once the DLCs hit. Better than Kingmaker/WotR/Tyranny, but worse than BG3/D:OS/Underrail as far as modern CRPGs go. Haven't played PoE.
