What you say might be true, but DA:O itself was the modern trash back then. Pretty standard fantasy story, the unique quirks were just superficial, horrible combat with plentiful but not deep enough mechanics, broken tactics system (don't know if this was patched later). Also the environments were pretty lackluster with the exception of maybe the fade (which was horrible for other reasons). I still remember how fricking disappointed I was with the Elven forest. I was hyped for another Silver Hill (remember it was marketed as a spiritual successor to BG2) and then it was so boring and drab. It's to this day the only CRPG I didn't finish. I just couldn't stomach it anymore after the halfway point. My roomie powered through, so I saw with my own eyes that my instincts were right and the rest was trash too.

the animations look goofy as frick in third person, and in top down geometry CONSTANTLY gets in your view and obscures the entire screen until you fricking press alt and rotate the screen. Not to mention you have to click all the time, can't just hold lclick like in any other game.
Then there's shit like >setting is generic fantasy but everything has an original name so it's not undead but le darkspawn >faces look like just 1 step above neverwinter nights, and 1 step below kotor somehow >dialogues and VA are wood tier, the "king" you meet near the grey warden camp after the tutorial section sounds like a fricking wimpy uni freshman in botanical science, not a skilled formidable warrior king the game paints him to be >blood splatters are flat red squares in top down mode >game crashes for no reason during the 4-man grey warden trial
it's just a total shitshow even with all the patches and community fixes. Rose tinted glasses: the game
>and in top down geometry CONSTANTLY gets in your view and obscures the entire screen until you fricking press alt and rotate the screen. Not to mention you have to click all the time, can't just hold lclick like in any other game.
It's better to use in combat but worse in exploration and for immersion so if you want the ideal experience you need to be conscious of the camera 24/7. Sometimes you can see further ahead with one camera view than the other. They clearly designed the whole game around console first.
>and in top down geometry CONSTANTLY gets in your view and obscures the entire screen until you fricking press alt and rotate the screen.
Unless you're playing on a console, that's a moronic complaint because you can just move the camera to 3rd person
The rest of your post is bad too
The humans were pretty generic humans albeit with some engaging politic-ing, but the elves and (especially) dwarves and mage tower stuff were handed very well. I do love OOT fantasy races and it gets a lot of value by making them more creature than human but DAO paid a lot more attention to the race's lore and interweaving that lore into the game's plotlines
The fade sections were the only bits I remember being really cool. Human noble background has obvious red alert commander voiced villain and your dude's mom fights with him.
Dwarf background has an even more obvious ambush and no obvious option to takeover the dwarf kingdom when your dude returns.
The rest is no story. Just, >an ancient evil has returned because dragon prophecy >you are part monster like a witcher
It never really fleshes out its' premises. It's extremely shallow.
>>an ancient evil has returned because dragon prophecy
There's no prophecy at all >>you are part monster like a witcher
Lol what? You're not. And nobody knew what a wither was in 2009, what a zoomer post
I don't know too much about the human and elf origin storylines, but I bet humans and mages must have some juicy engaging components looking at the reaction to it. Dwarves is great because it has the classic Bioware-style choice "who do you want to be the leader? normal guy? or total psycho bastard only people who choose all Evil choices will ever pick?" but it flips it on its head by giving the younger bastard brother a lot of interesting policies and outlooks so much so the candidate who betrays you is a lot more popular of a choice than the noble honorable older brother. The branded dwarves is a fun concept, can't even see the sky without being treated as an outcast really fun way to lean into the dwarf fantasy, and probably one of the best rags-to-riches origin.
Darkspawn gets carried by the opening sequence, it's all very interesting lore and sets up a lot of stuff like there are other Archdemons and the Black City and the magisters which unfortunately the game doesn't payoff and BioWare seems uninterested in paying off in the subsequent games. So to a lot of players they seem like a generic orc invasion and not this metal high fantasy 'folly of man' thing BioWare was going for.
The not-orcs are a boring protagonist but do have some interesting twists to them.
The only really memorable thing about them is in the DLC where you fight some brood mothers which are straight out of berserk. And if you bother to read all the lore bits it has a nice twist that they exist because humanity fricked around in things they shouldn't and created and corruption that can't be stopped.

nta but that's what Gaider based the darkspawn corruption off of
No way, I usually turn off my brain during the opening exposition sequence or opening gameplay section or can barely understand what is going on ala Dragon's Dogma or honestly Fromsoft. But with DAO the darkspawn lore was actually gripping me hard, all-powerful dragongay sorceries in their arrogance tries to glimpse heaven but find it blackened and cursed unleashing a blight, corrupting themselves and now they & their thralls dig until they find a slumbering dragon to lead their armies on the forces above? I can't do it justice from memory but I was into it I thought it was badass, and way more badass than generic orc invasion.
I wish the game was 20hrs longer and they could have given a conclusion to the darkspawn, more Archdemon screentime, rather than leaving it to future games because clearly nuBioWare agrees with your mentality you can't just have a evil faction they need to have muh nuance ala dindu mages and elves

But the most interesting parts about them was the lore and my anticipation for seeing things like the other magisters/archdemons/Black City

>So to a lot of players they seem like a generic orc invasion and not this metal high fantasy 'folly of man' thing BioWare was going for.
The series started with a lot of nuance that slowly got dropped; the Mage and Templars conflict is maybe the best example. What was a presented at first as a difficult situation where both sides can be shit and often mirror each other, degraded into clear favouritism towards the "oppressed" faction
>Darkspawn gets carried by the opening sequence
Literally just hordes of mordor orcs, but actually mindless. Booooring.
I think it's good and has a lot of charm. I've played a bunch of RPGs lately including all the Dragon Age, Divinity: Original Sin, Morrowind and DAO did stand out to me it feels like it hit the mark way better than the others. Adding your character origin went a long way and the fantasy aspects were just written better all the races have their own engaging plotlines, I enjoyed all the companion characters but admittedly some way more than others and some can feel pretty generic compared to other Bioware-esque companion sets.
Okay. I know I'll get flak for this. But I'll stand by saying that baldur's gate 3 is actually really bad.
>Game restricts player freedom as time goes on >Shit endings >Weak villains >Characters never form an attachment to anyone except for you >There's so much content that you won't actually experience and that just means that there's a lot of junk taking up memory on your computer >You can still see the vestiges of ideas they had in the early access that were changed for the final game but had already been included in early access and so couldn't be removed (such as designing your night visitor even though they are no longer romantic towards you in the final game) >Sometimes the game would arbitrarily decide which events were unavoidable and which were. An example would be killing Alfira as the dark urge being something you have to do and your choices don't actually matter. >The sex scenes are so dull that you can tell they only exist to be checked off.
I really feel like Baldur's Gate 3 is an ode to excess. The game itself is so grand that you can see it straining under its own weight. Especially as time goes on and you get further into the game.
>Game restricts player freedom as time goes on >Shit endings >Weak villains >Characters never form an attachment to anyone except for you
I’ll give you the above, but than you really start grasping. Especially about their being too much content? lol
's so much content that you won't actually experience and that just means that there's a lot of junk taking up memory on your computer
You had me until this, nice bait kek
I'll defend the fact that too much content is a bad thing when it just sits there taking up space. The game is by no means a long game. I'd be okay with 152 gigabytes when each gigabyte counts. But most of it is voice lines you'll never hear, animations you'll never see and scenarios for situations you'll never encounter. The game can be as wide as an ocean and by the third act with the depth of a puddle.
>The game can be as wide as an ocean and by the third act with the depth of a puddle.
Anon, that's the opposite of what you're saying.
You're saying the game has a ton of content you don't get to explore because it's hidden behind a layer of choices : that is depth.
Wide as a puddle is the Bethesda style role playing where your choice are more about what quest to do than proper roleplaying, and so you can experience every roleplay the game has to offer every playthrough.
It sounds like your complaint is more so that the game takes too much space because of it's depth, than taking too much space because of superficial bloat.
The entire plot starts because of the problem that can be solved by 4th level cleric spell. This bullshit is even worse than vorpal sword plot from NWN 2.
's so much content that you won't actually experience and that just means that there's a lot of junk taking up memory on your computer
You had me until this, nice bait kek
Origins is classic bioware in that the game manages to be more than the sum of its parts.
Any individual aspect in and of itself is bland and derivative but it all works together. It also has top tier party banter.
What really makes the game stand out for me is that the three/four main origins all do a good job of tying back into the story with some satisfying payoff.
Not to mention it has really good AI triggers you can set for each character so you don't have to babysit your characters as much.
Origins is actually historically relevant because it pretty much resurrected the genre. I don´t personally like RTwP but as an RPG experience the game delivers. I mean, from the go race and class were actually relevant and affected the origin story of the PC. Even if all roads lead to Rome more games should explore and experiment with that kind of stuff.
My point is DA:O had some pretty cool ideas for it´s time. Of course we all thought that once the technical limitations allowed it they would continue that path. Instead they chickened out and went full action... but origins itself was promising.
>DA:O had some pretty cool ideas for it´s time
Such as? Party scripts are literally gambits from FF12, different start for different race and class wasn't even new, games did this before.
>Origins is actually historically relevant because it pretty much resurrected the genre.
Or it could've if Bioware wasn't a moronic company staffed by homosexuals and women.
Instead of realizing what they had they instead opted to chase trends and appeal to the "call of duty audience", increasingly removing any rpg identity from their games
And now almost two decades later we see the consequences, smaller companies like Larian and Owlcat are making bank creating traditional rpgs and Bioware hasn't made a successfully new game in 10 years and is getting sued and bleeding staff like it has leper
this and every other CRPG has been absolutely terrible

This isn't better than Final Fantasy XIII. It's just aimless with a bunch of optional side quests. If you like grinding, I guess this game might be better for you. Also, frick the final dungeon in this game. These fights are frustrating. I just want it to be over.
HOWEVER.....it really is a basic b***h game, it lacks depth, it has a lot of depth in the romance simulator aspect though, which is the entire reason why Ganker is still obsessed with it

U N H I N G E D
BG3 and elden shit are trash you schizophrenic Black person
The entire plot starts because of the problem that can be solved by 4th level cleric spell. This bullshit is even worse than vorpal sword plot from NWN 2.
's so much content that you won't actually experience and that just means that there's a lot of junk taking up memory on your computer
You had me until this, nice bait kek
half life, fricking shit movie game
Sekiro
Sounds like skill issue.
ZOG's Gate 3.
Mass Effect 2
Which coincidentally is the exact same game as Dragon Age Origins
All Owlcat games
Such a mixed bag. Theirs some good stuff in them but frick if parts aren't complete autistic garbage. I hate Slavs so much it’s unreal.
Yeah, the console versions were crap
Since I'm not a homosexual, I played the PC version and it was great and only homosexuals would disagree
The DMC games
Origins is classic bioware in that the game manages to be more than the sum of its parts.
Any individual aspect in and of itself is bland and derivative but it all works together. It also has top tier party banter.
What really makes the game stand out for me is that the three/four main origins all do a good job of tying back into the story with some satisfying payoff.
Not to mention it has really good AI triggers you can set for each character so you don't have to babysit your characters as much.
Game is still shit, kiddo.
>Party scripts are literally gambits from FF12
Party scripts existed in the original baldur's gate games too you moronic weaboo.
Contagency isn't exactly a beavior scrip. You should have mentioned Fallout 2 instead, you poser.
>Contagency isn't exactly a beavior scrip.
Did you just have a stroke?
Just missed a letter.
And now almost two decades later we see the consequences, smaller companies like Larian and Owlcat are making bank creating traditional rpgs and Bioware hasn't made a successfully new game in 10 years and is getting sued and bleeding staff like it has leper
>smaller companies like Larian and Owlcat are making bank creating traditional rpgs
I wonder why Obsidian couldn't make it.
All the talent either left or already lost their touch
Including Josh "Once Cucked Lowtax" Sawyer
Because they want to make their own games unironically, they could've accomplished more by building upon an existing ip.
>played half year ago
>like a breath of fresh air
OP cant stop thinking about Ubislop sementanks
Reminder
>playing japshit instead of actually good written games
Better than baldurs gate 3.
anything souls-like
Because that's the PS3 version you moron.
this and every other CRPG has been absolutely terrible
like a bunch of disgusting virgins endlessly rehashing superior stories like LOTR but with cussing, blood, and sex
oh, and the battle systems have all been objectively shit, too
BG2 is shit
Dragon Age is shit
BG3 is shit
pathfinder games are shit
woke cyberpunk CRPG games (I don't know what the frick those homosexualron games are called) are also shit
Boring combat, and a mediocre story that tries to ride on the twin Peaks & Steven king dick.
Soundtrack is decent.
This isn't better than Final Fantasy XIII. It's just aimless with a bunch of optional side quests. If you like grinding, I guess this game might be better for you. Also, frick the final dungeon in this game. These fights are frustrating. I just want it to be over.
Is this game worth it on consoles?
Or the other cam mode that is on PC is the only way to go?
Its fine on consoles. Some QoL stuff missing from PC version.
Honestly the game is so old it should be able to run on even a toaster.
Thanks mate.
>Game that OP thinks is bad is actually the greatest RPG KINO ever made
Many such cases
I loved this game so much and I don't care what anybody here says.
DAO is good, fun game
HOWEVER.....it really is a basic b***h game, it lacks depth, it has a lot of depth in the romance simulator aspect though, which is the entire reason why Ganker is still obsessed with it
If it wasn't old and it came out today Ganker would hate it.
