>Gamecube isn't reading discs anymore
I hope this thing isn't permanently fricked. It was working just fine, then it started getting a bit fricky (had to open and close the lid multiple times to register the disc, but once it read a game it'd play fine) and now it's not reading anything. Fortunately the retro store I got it from is really good about repairs and shit, and the dudes who run it are really nice, but I really hope it's not done for. Research suggests it's just the laser needs adjusting, though I lack the tools or confidence to open it up and fix it myself.

Not yet, I might try that, it doesn't LOOK dirty at all but then again it's worth a shot.

Update: Tried that, didn't work. I think either the laser or the motor is fricked.

Never use hipster beer on a laser

I've seen a lot of gamecubes failing lately and they haven't been fixable by adjusting the laser resistance.

Alright, I think I found out the problem. The laser read head isn't sliding back and forward properly. It might just need cleaning out, but then again it might need the motor replacing.

You might need to apply some fresh grease to the rails. I don't know how hard that might be in a Gamecube.

There a reason you'd do this over Blue Burst?

Big diarrhea into the disk tray and let it seep into the internals.

does it work with the more greasy kind of shit? i don't have diarrhea right now, but my poop is still relatively fluid. like, it doesn't run straight into all the cracks and crevices, but if i wait about 10 minutes, a significant amount of my liquid, mushy, smelly shit has run into the gamecube. i had cornflakes yesterday, so there are also small lumps. will it work?

It should still work, give it a try.

Capacitor failure is a common issue with the GameCube disc drives. You may need to get it recapped.

Never adjust the laser until all other basic maintenance has been done on the drive.
    Tear down, clean, relubricate.
Also, opening and closing the lid making it work sounds like the switch that detects whether the lid is closed is fricked, so clean and test that too.

Time to get a GCLoader and stop worrying about discs.

Came to suggest this. Not sure how it took like 30 posts. It’s literally plug and play now and brain dead to install.
Learning to fix it is also a good solution, you’re gonna need to perform maintenance on your other consoles anyways. Capacitors are gonna go bad if nothing else.

Just get a wii instead at that point.

No digital out, no dicking around with Nintendont. Personally I have both, but the GameCube with GCLoader is a better experience for playing GC games. Admittedly not by much.

I like the GBA player and the carrying handle. Plus the GC Eon has HDMI out so, so a GC Loader and an SD card full of games and roms is always a fun thing to bring on a trip. I'm going to visit my family over Christmas and me and my brother are gonna smoke weed and play the shit out of smash bros and 007.

It's the spindle in the center, there are tiny plastic tabs inside of it and if one breaks it doesn't hold discs level. I remember fixing mine for a while when I was a teenager by removing the spring inside the spindle. You can probably find replacement part online, or just mod the console. Some people fixed theirs with epoxy I believe.

Get a japanese wii and import games. Cheaper, plus uncensored. 'cept re4 but that's ported to everything anyways.

      >hurr spend the most money on the system that is arguably the cheapest and most common in the world and actually pay for games
The system is not worth collecting for. The dozen games worth playing aren't exactly must plays.
The wii is an embarrassing console to like which sucks because it's best in class for 480i capable devices.
