Are a problem. It's like 50% of the reason for why reviews have become useless.
The latter one is easy to understand. It happens when a publisher paid for a review score. Most contracts of that kind don't say anything about the actual text of the review, because execs know people don't bother reading them anyway and just look at the metacritic average. Thus the reviewer is free to say what they actually think.
But the former one, that I don't understand.
You want to chalk it up to some crazy conspiracy but honestly it's often time.
You write a review hot off your playthrough, compiling all the notes you took, you have to put it out asap and you try to get all the positives in there so you don't just shit all over it.
Then you spend a bit too long thinking about the game and the more you think the worse you remember it being.
No time to go back and rewrite your review, so you let your score speak for your feelings and smash it over to publishing.
You're assuming journalists think
most people are emotional morons so they cant give a worthwhile review on anything. just look at imdb, most reviews are either 10/10s or 1/10s

based, to the average person the only thing that actually matters is their time, and any single piece of media is either not worth their time (1) or worth their time (10), that's the only scale that matters to the non-infantilised human being
That, and people have a basic understanding of how average scores work and a will to manipulate the system. So if a person sees a game they would rate a 7/10 have an average score of 6/10, they'll give it a full 10/10 to bring the average closer to what they think it should be.

The revenue stream came from magazine subscriptions. That meant that your subscribers were your #1 priority. Publishers and publisher deals could and still mattered. But most would rather piss of a publisher than piss of their subscribers.

Also even ignoring all that. Videogames didn't use to be reviewed on what is essentially a 100 point scale. Where anything below a 7 is seen as bad and 10s are seen as this mythical, hypothetical perfection that could not ever be reached.

This is exactly what's going on with current writers. They don't understand the characters or the story they are writing. They have no story to tell. No real purpose aside from thinking they can improve upon established media. They don't respect the source material or the creators because they think that since they spent 100k on college, they know better.

The majority of these people handling popular franchises either hate them and are only just finding out about them for the assignment.

How is this even a question? They hate those characters because they are liked by heterosexual men. Same with ideogames original characters, same with characters from movies, tv or whatever. Batman or harley themselves are completely irrelevant. Batman is liked by straight men, so, it must be destroyed. Harley was infected and is now a symbol because she is powerful women who needs no man, so, she must be celebrated.
Would be cool if IGN maintained this new standard of not giving mediocre games a 7 or 8 out of 10 and giving them 4 or 5 out of 10.
The 1-10 system sucks. The 4 star system actually challenges the reviewer to have an opinion. A 6/10 has been considered a bad game for a long time but those were probably more like 2 out 4 stars games

These scales are useless and bullshit. The only "scale" that matters is 0 or 1. Is it good, or not? Did you enjoy playing it, or not? Nobody gives a frick about your deep dive analysis of the various components of the game. It doesn't fricking matter if the story is good but the graphics suck, or the music is terrible but the gameplay is excellent. I don't care. When you play a game, you're not interacting one-on-one with these various sub-elements, you're interacting with the game as a whole, so that's all that fricking matters.

I've been reading some of the 40-50 reviews and they do shit like calling the missions repetitive and boring, calling the combat bad, and calling the bosses shit. Like the only thing I see "journalists" praising often is shit like the voice acting and writing (lol), and at the end of the day that doesn't matter if the game is shit
