They include mining into gaming, because they put all consumer cards as "gaming", there was a huge uproar or whatever when they did it. They recently announced like 10% drop in revenue due to crypto crash.

They're predicting their AI sales to go to $11 billion in the next quarter, that's why their stock has shot up. Their consumer GPU business isn't a small amount of business, but clearly they're moving to where the most money is going to be in the next few years as everyone tries to build the biggest and best AI cluster

  3. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

The R&D for vidya is what allows the companies to do what they do elsewhere.

Does anyone seriously think home computers would have got to where they are if gaming wasn't the reason to buy bigger and better? Most people never needed more than basic text/spreadsheet/calculator editing and a basic set of visual capabilities for, later, browsing the web.

When gaming stops making them constant money every few years then these big influxes will mater. These big influxes are using tech made for gaming. If they stop caring about games, AMD wins more than they recently have in CPU but then in GPU. Then new markets won't care to use Nvidia since it will be the worse option or slower.

I believe the key is by stopping to actively boycott, and starting to passively ignore.

Actively boycotting is still showing interest and passion about a subject, while passively ignoring it is slowly orientating your life in another direction.

You may still consume Nvidia products in this exemple by passively ignoring it more and more, but the attention they get is then reduced and will possibly reach a more balanced state.

It's not really a free market when there are IPs that only allow these companies to even exist on this specific market. Intel and AMD are literally the only ones that can develop x86-64 CPUs. On the PC GPU side it's similar, there are many IPs that only AMD, Nvidia and Intel hold. But if you go out the PC bubble you'll see that there many players making specialized GPU/accelerator solutions for companies.

      innovation in marketing maybe
all AMD had to do to make the 7900 competitive with nvidia cards in AI (using a non-optimized generalized implementation VS an nvidia provided and optimized implementation i might add) was add one instruction for intelligently scheduling sparse fused matrix multiply add and suddenly every rdna3 compute unit is capable of acting as a tensor core equivalent
meanwhile it took nvidia how long to develop and mature tensor cores (which are completely separate from everything else and their own highly specialized hardware)?

and there's a major update to all of the FidelityFx software suite improving the entire SDK including but not limited to providing AMD's DLSS3 equivalent on the way
and there's ways to provide the dlss API using those solutions on non-nvidia platforms so even if developers are too lazy or stupid to support the open alternatives (or paid off by gameworks) they don't have a say
i don't know what more you morons want, i guess it just needs to be platform exclusive so you can continue your little console wars garbage when it's obvious nvidia is losing this fight in the long term now that it's literally everyone who makes hardware and then some against them

DLSS isn't important. DLSS takes information between two frames and tries to guess how it should look like in-between, which is supposed to reduce the need for actual rasterization and improve frame rates. If, hypothetically, your GPU isn't good enough and the frame rate is natively slow, DLSS will look much worse because the more lag there is between two frames, the more guessing DLSS has to do (even if frame rates would improve). If you're playing an older game or turning down settings, you don't need DLSS. If you're playing a newer game or are on the highest settings, you would need a more powerful GPU in the first place, enough for a high enough frame rate for DLSS to relatively work.

Also, triple A gaming needs to die, but the main problem isn't game developers being shit at their jobs. It's Nvidia holding everyone else hostage by constantly trying to push DLSS.

Dlss isn't important except as a crutch for developers, making it more and more necessary for anything that is a port even though your computer has a spec that dwarfs the console it was made for. Optimization is done by pajeets.

              >but the main problem isn't game developers being shit at their jobs
no, no, he's right, it definitely is
nvidia's enabling them via shit like DLSS and authoring vulkan extensions like VK_EXT_shader_object but the demand came from the gamedev side first
most game programmers are too stupid to handle graphics programming on the new-style APIs but that's not even the worst of it
according to some mobile graphics driver devs on Ganker a lot of the problem is actually coming from the way modern engines like unreal let artists author shader code (as opposed to graphics programmers) via visual editors and the way they do it is just nonsensical and horrible

              [...]
you copy and paste one file in the game's folder and then it stops being greyed out in the game's options
i guess since you had to install the game itself it doesn't exist either

It's almost a he-said-she-said - I'll concede that I don't really know who's to blame. Maybe they both are. I hate triple A game devs AND Nvidia.

Dlss has been a god send for nvidia and developers because developers don't bother optimizing games and dlss can fix that! Nvidia doesn't care because it can sell you lower end equipment marketed at higher prices and uses dlss to say look at that performance increase with these new cards!

Are these IN THE GAME BY DEFAULT? can consumer GO TO GAME OPTIONS AND CLICK ON?
            No?
Then it doesn't fricking exist. What is hard to grasp about this? Even most people who build their own pcs don't go into directly fricking with their gpu settings via controller. They want it to work out of the box

People who buy Nvidia are beyond all help anyways. Only the biggest consoomers buy them instead of the sensible choice, AMD.

The only reason I buy Nvidia is the developer favoritism. Every developer makes for their drivers (which is why amds never work on release) and every developer is leaning hard on. The dlss fricking meme now rather than optimizing. I'm basically held hostage. Fortunately after doing the research I figured out to get a meaningful upgrade on my 2070super I'd need to spend more than just buying a ps5, so that's what I'm going to do instead in a few months. I mostly play strat games like total war anyway which are more cpu and ram reliant anyway.

AMD isn't even significantly cheaper, if they really were delivering reasonably priced GPUs while Nvidia is trying to sell midrange GPUs for $1k they would've taken the market by storm, but they're content undercutting Nvidia by like 50 bucks and just trying to catch the crumbs that fall off Nvidia's table. Ironically Intel is the only one delivering good value GPUs and that's only because they're a new player in the market.

AMDs aren't much cheaper but Nvidia is so inflated they dominate the price point vs performance value calculation. Pretty much every Nvidia card is overpriced by hundreds of dollars for what it delivers in terms of spec.

AI won't impact consumer-grade hardware anyway. Nobody but complete hobbyists are going to use a RX4090 and so on for AI. This isn't crypto where you can just slap together 50000 3060s and make money off it. As demonstrated by LLaMA/Alpaca/Vicuna and so on, these smaller models are worthless outside of select benchmarks. It'll always be more efficient to either own actual datacenter hardware, or more preferably, rent the capacity or a pre-existing service if you want quality.
At worst, Nvidia is going to cut down the VRAM capacity of their next cards to make them useless for even the more basic AI models. Not that anybody would care, there is no consumer application for more than 8GB of VRAM anyway.

this is why you're getting 8GB vram in 2023 when AAA games are so unoptimized they eat 10GB minimum, so nvidia can build more 48GB workstation gpus while marketers are pushing AI

    Dear PC Gamers,

Guess what, PC Gamers? I've finally developed the ultimate scheme! In three months I'll control the graphics cards market! Think you can stop me?

    Sincerely,
    Nvidia

AMD doesn't want to compete with njudea at the high end, so there's nothing any of us can do except perhaps cope that intel might do something. Otherwise they have an uncontested monopoly.
