The word discord and the similar sounding word discourse are both related to communication. They're also not super common words people use every day like "team" and "speak"
Discord sounds like the opposite of what you'd want to name a messaging program, if you asked a random person who hasn't heard of it they'd probably guess a news app or at best something more like twitter

a communication platform with hundreds of millions users?

Yeah, a place where you can say inflammatory bullshit and have strangers argue with you
Not a messaging program you use to chat and voice with your friends

Discord is a better name than teamspeak because teamspeak implies a fairly narrow scope of communication (working as a team on winning a game or working as a team on a business project) while Discord sounds like a general purpose talking-to-people platform which includes all the stuff you use teamspeak for.
TeamSpeak sounds like an old ass product made by a clueless boomer, aka like an in house Microsoft product, except even Skype of all things sounds more modern
TeamSpeak sounds like some shitty business program you have to use for meetings, Discord sounds more fun and social like you and your friends are about to have a crazy game night

it wasn't the name, it was the fricking chore it was to use the free version of ts which was fricking garbage, setting a server was shit, with an atrocious over bloated UI and not intuitive at all to normalgays, some of the worst mic capture technology ever with an abysmal audio quality. I'm glad I never have to deal with ts ever again, has to be the worst app I've ever been "forced" to use of all time.
X-Fire was great, and it's sad that nothing has come along to replace it. Steam still only has a fraction of its functionality, and with a UI that hides most of it in layers of menus.
homosexual veteran larper. I bet this Black person didn't even play games before youtube and streamer got popular. I wish these people would fricking off themselves
Didn't you have to set up your own TeamSpeak server, while Discord did it for you which conveniently allowed them to log everything and send it to the ADL?
I have about 24000 messages on discord and it creeps me out that it's all saved on a database, without me giving the option to wipe it all. The fact that I have to manually delete every message is grim to say the least.
I talked with cute gamer women out there, said Black person probably 900 times. Microsoft has me by the balls.
Yup this. Discord 100% deserved its market dominance, all other voip and chat programs were complacent and stale when suddenly a new competitor arrived actually innovating and bringing in new persistent chat features with images, chat logs, FREE voice chat, there was nothing teamspeak or mumble could do. They were outmatched.
>all these deluded fools think DC got as dominant as it did because it was good instead of the fact that it is literal spyware that sells your private data to the highest bidders
Yeah being spyware is why it took off not because it gave you three programs worth of functionality with none of the difficulty and the incumbent (skype) recently just got bought by microsoft and shat itself. It was definitely the spyware that made everyone move over.
TS lost because it wasn't a glowing honeypot backed by the US government.
We both know what you are doing in those server you fricking furgays, yiff in hell pieces of shit, you will go down alongside your emperor, in burning nuclear hellfire.
I've used so fricking many VOIPs over the years...MSN, Teamspeak, Mumble, Skype, Raidcall, even some Razer comms thing. It's nice to have them consolidated these days.
teamspeak was some janky old shit where you couldnt just call up your friends after downloading
you had to find and empty server or pay to make your own which sucks my wiener
discord is good because you just press a button while drooling and you're in
My internet buddies used to use Mumble. Now we use TS and only sometimes Discord when we wanna stream something for each other (we mute the Discord mics tho and still talk in TS).
IoT LTSC with all diagnostic and tracking services removed and/or blocked in my hosts file. The only reason I'm not using Linux is because I couldn't get my GPU driver to work.
As someone that manages game communities, Discord is a lifesaver. I can just use it for everything now. As much as I'm nostalgic for Forums, using Discord is just better.
I had no idea TeamSpeak was still around.
right off the bat I can already tell the name alone helped them lose. discord is way more marketable. These things are important when doing business
They also don’t encourage grooming and porn addiction
its also free to make a server and supports sending image and video which team speak did not have at the time
Isn't Discord made by a furry?
worse, a coin clipper
How the frick is Discord more marketable than TeamSpeak, it doesn't even sound like a chat program
Teamspeak sounds like some 1337 gamer thing while Discord sounds like a place where people talk to each.
>Discord sounds like a place where people talk to each.
No it doesn't moron, you just say that cause you're used to it now
The word discord and the similar sounding word discourse are both related to communication. They're also not super common words people use every day like "team" and "speak"
Yeah, what the hell does "Skype" mean anyways? Doesn't sounds like a chat program to me
Well no it doesn't. If I had never heard of it and was forced to guess I'd think Skype was a file hosting service (Sky = cloud).

>Zoom
>MS Teams
You're just talking out of hindsight

Because it gives adults easy access to children
I firmly believe that they thought they were using the word "Discourse" and no one bothered to check.
>it doesn't even sound like a chat program
That's exactly what makes it marketable.

discord marketing is completely moronic, just take a look at their slogan
discord's dominance is anything but grassroots. the chinese connection should tell one all they need to know
They did lose to that, that is correct.
Wendy's did irreparable damages to social media
More like spiced them the hell up
They shouldn't have spice to begin with. Companies aren't your friend.
Sonic and Denny's did it first and people only attribute this to Wendy's because a hole was running that account.

Man, I remember using x-fire a lot. It was super helpful when most games still weren't based on matchmaking.
>i am relevant because I pay for tick
God I hate check mark homosexuals.
X-Fire was great, and it's sad that nothing has come along to replace it. Steam still only has a fraction of its functionality, and with a UI that hides most of it in layers of menus.

I got a ring in there last night.
I came here to be alone
Dropped your pants?
I got a ring in there last night
ohh dood 4 STR 4 STAM leather belt? AHHHH level 18? AUGH OUGH
Dude, I love corporate twitter accounts ran by underpaid underage interns being wacky and unhinged and doing maymays!!!!!!!!!!!
Not vidya.
I miss ventrillo and xfire
Didn't you have to set up your own TeamSpeak server, while Discord did it for you which conveniently allowed them to log everything and send it to the ADL?
Yeah people had whole ass server PCs back then to host VOIP and game servers
Yea that's why it failed, wouldn't surprise me if Discord was funded by the FBI/CIA to get off the ground.
Just to actually answer your question, Astlibra is exactly that.
Didn't know that one, thanks
TS fricking sucked if you wanted to do anything but VC.
Discord is decent at everything.
The teamspeak twitter account makes posts referencing discord almost weekly. It was funny at first but it's getting sad
>Have to either host your own server or buy one
This is why it failed.
The Journeyman Project games.
Discord won because they offered IRC+MSN+Teamspeak servers all for free.
someone has to pay for these
inFamous

>should we add text channels with embedding and easy file sharing?
>no
They killed themselves.
They were complacent even though everyone wanted a better text chat and UI and now they rushed to copy Discord. They're losers.
New logo also looks shite
republic of gamers/bad boy looking ass
They already dropped that and their shitty short-lived mascot I think.
Grim

>free services sell your data
Fricking shocking, Facebook also got popular because it spied on people from day 1
>dc got dominant because it's spyware
what? how does being spyware makes it dominant? fricking Black person never post again.
>Me a mumble user, paying monthly for our guild's voip server
>Whoa, a new alternative thats FREE? And has better chat function? Sorry mumble..
OH NO NOT MY HECKING PRIVATE DATA PLEASE DISCORD DON'T SELL IT I'M BEGGING YOU
american post
American planet. Sorry.
not for long
The only use I have for TS over Discord is for ARMA 3 radio simulation plugins, Discord is just better and much easier to use for everything else.
What the frick does that discord tweet even mean?
How their snoring sounds like
TS lost because it wasn't a glowing honeypot backed by the US government.
We both know what you are doing in those server you fricking furgays, yiff in hell pieces of shit, you will go down alongside your emperor, in burning nuclear hellfire.
Who is the Emperor of Furries?
Auguspaw?
Yiffinian?
>Previous game hero's untimely death sets the world back centuries in progress
I'll never forgive Microsoft

Never spoken to foreign nerdlingers while playing an online game, never will.
Have you spoken to friends?
My friends don't game and we have phones.
you lost. shut the frick up and get over it
Mumble-bros, ww@?
>30k redoots
>350k uplikes
>15m doots
People want the old stuff back.
It's late into the game, but Dragon Quest XI
Get off Discord or I'll have you bent.
I used to run my groups vent and then teamspeak server and one day someone made a discord and everyone just moved over there.
Come home white man
I still use teamspeak with my +35 boomer friends and I own a teamspeak server
My friends and i just use steam chat, all its missing is a livestream feature
Last I check the audio quality in steam chat is shit.
i wish corporations would stop acting like people
goes for both of them
My internet buddies used to use Mumble. Now we use TS and only sometimes Discord when we wanna stream something for each other (we mute the Discord mics tho and still talk in TS).
discord is free and just works. all the alternatives require money. plus the built in screen share is convenient.
This really is it and any arguments otherwise are coming from hipsters who think they're cool for not using it or boomers who haven't moved over.
>discord is free
it's only free if you don't value your privacy
post a screenshot of your (almost certainly windows) desktop
IoT LTSC with all diagnostic and tracking services removed and/or blocked in my hosts file. The only reason I'm not using Linux is because I couldn't get my GPU driver to work.
If you're too stupid to use literally any linux distro in 2024 year of our lord you are too stupid to stop companies tracking you, full stop.
As someone that manages game communities, Discord is a lifesaver. I can just use it for everything now. As much as I'm nostalgic for Forums, using Discord is just better.
