Deep Rock Galactic is made in Unreal. Engine is just a tool and when you load it, it doesn't ruin your good taste and artistic ability.

Okay, not that anon but objectively, every game made in unreal engine has that same ugly stock unreal lighting. It genuinely looks like shit. The few games that look good that are unreal engine are 10+ years old now.
Like you said this is more of an art direction issue than a game engine issue but I feel like it's potentially both in this case.
Unironically Decima. Say what you want about Horizon but game looks great without turning into a colorless gray blob unlike UE4 games, Death Stranding looks pure sovl too. Germans knows what they are doing when it comes to video game engines.
It's easy enough to make a wide open space with a grand scale and good lighting/shadows, but show me a forest with actualy gameplay in it rendered better than UE4/5 and we'll talk

it allows unexperience dev to cobble a shitty game together and make it look good enough to pass. No one knows how to properly optimize games made from it, the documentation surrounding it is subpar at best.

the real problem with UE is the low barrier of entry is more likely to attract beginner devs and unskilled coders than more difficult engines
it's similar to how BMW drivers are the most likely to damage their cars, it's not because BMWs are more fragile but because they invite a demographic of drivers more likely to get into accidents

unreal engine is a mess. it's a bunch of good looking fancy effects at the cost of performance and clarity. every unreal engine games are a blurry mess with most game having forced TAA. we're in the dark age of gaming where everyone uses the same engine and the same ideas.

Not only it's not efficient when it comes to storage it's also awful for anything that's not an FPS. Evil Within 1 was awful at launch, that was idTech 5 but still. idTech 7 isn't that different I assume. Frostbite is also like that but looks better.
Frostbite seems fine for 3rd person action games too like PvZ garden warfare and the dead space remake

Depends, some parts of the engine are but others aren't. Some areas are real nice to work with but others I wonder what the frick that department is doing.
