The Sims was revolutionary back then and very based. I have no problem with it winning GOTY. A lot of you seem to really not be able to put yourselves in these time periods at all which puts things into perspective a lot. Back in 2000 a game like The Sims was something absolutely extraordinary, original and good. What I do laugh at however is how overrated and over hyped the games of today can be. Esepcially how much journalists overrated indie shlock (if I used that word right) when these games are extremely derivative.
Phantasy Star? I'm not going to argue about games of that time more deserving since it wasn't my point at all. The Sims however was a great and unique game for its time. Some shit like Hades which IGN considers the 13th best game in the world is definitely what I was getting at previous post.

Samurai Shodown being the first ever weapon based fighting game is pretty huge
FF7 & Sims had no business winning though, GoldenEye deserved it for being the first playable console shooter and creating the modern FPS genre

It think RE2 is the most surprising considering how big it blew up and how sequels are given goty nominations to retroactively acknowledge the games that came before it that were just breaking out at the time and were overlooked by what was more popular/anticipated/hyped at the time
