No, he's right. To have fun with fighting games you either need to button mash and only play against other button mashers, or be a full on autist memorizing and grinding out 1000000 combos and character interactions and only playing other people that have done the same. There's no middle ground. If you know a bit more than a button masher but you're not good enough to do every combo under pressure, you're not having fun.

You really don't need to do this unless you're playing like Tekken or some anime fighter that's just knowledge check city. A game like SF is pretty simple to just play and learn as you go. You only need to lab a couple short combos and setups. A lot of times it'll literally just be like button>button>special.
