what is even considered retro nowadays?
like some people still insist PS2 is not retro
because apparently 20+ years is not enough

      I separate retro/classics/old school/etc.

To me, games with bits/pixels is the retro.

The classics is just any old games in general.

To me Retro is true 8bit mainly cassette tape era. Years passed isn't a good indicator. Crysis isn't gonna seem retro in 7yr time. It needs a massive medium change. Like b&w to colour, 8bit 2D to 32bit 3D etc

Retro means a new thing that mimicks something that is old. NES games are not retro. The pixel art steam game "Mega Plumber Brothers" is retro.

Most people's command of language is horrible and they just reach for the wrong words.

Nah. Even Game mags back in the 90s referred to the original era of vidya as retro.

no, he's right. retro means a contemporary fashion that is inspired by or mimics something from the past.

If it runs on DOS, it's retro.
If it runs on win98 or later, it's not.
And before you ask about win95, nobody played games on that. Games in that time frames often had both DOS and windows versions, and the DOS version was almost always superior.

      >because apparently 20+ years is not enough
It's not about time, it's about how different they are from today's games. In the 90s we went from games that were literally white lines on black background to shapes like triangles, to games that looked like screensaver, to 2D with sprites, to 2,5D to 3D that looked like ass to 3D that actually looked good, all in 10 years.
If you compare a game that is 20 years old today like HL2 to a modern game, you see two games that look, sound, play and feel identical. Sure the modern one has slightly higher textures and a few more polygons in the models at the cost of 100GB extra space, but it's not that different.

Saying 20 year old games are retro is like saying the LOTR movies are retro films. Do they look retro to you? Hopefully not, otherwise you'd probably have brain damage. When you think you retro fils you think of something like black&white, or at the very least stuff before the 80s.

        >In the 90s we went from games that were literally white lines on black background to shapes like triangles

The 90s had 2D sprite that could pass for high budget cartoon/anime if played on CRT and 3D was well established.

        >Sure the modern one has slightly higher textures and a few more polygons in the models at the cost of 100GB extra space

Polygons add hardly any disc space and 100 GB is not "slightly higher textures" it's textures at resolution you probably can't even run.

You don't use the word retro correctly. All your thoughts are a mess.

And yet you also advocate gatekeeping.

    >THESE CHILDREN WILL SPOIL WHAT WE CHERISH ABOUT THESE GAMES WITH THEIR CONTEMPORARY SENSIBILITIES

what idiots like you don't understand about "gakekeeping" is that it's not meant to keep people out, but to assess their merit AT THE FRICKING GATE. you know, like a job interview or something. maybe that sounds "unfun" or "triggering" or "exclusionary" to you or whatever, but for the health of discussion, of the continued existence of your favorite thing, then it is necessary.

I play the guitar. I am not a professional. you do not have to be a professional to be reasonably proficient at the guitar, but if you waltz into a studio with the logic that "lmao green day only ever use power chords therefore I am on the level of an expert musician" then you're going to get laughed out of existence by people who will tell you that you could be the most competent musician in the world, a fricking savant, and you still might not have any market appeal.

in other words, you should know, and attempt to MEET, expectations before you encounter someone who has them, if you hope to fit in.

I imagine the ridiculous performance requirements of modern games and the cost of keeping up with them play a large part

There is no innovation left that requires advancing hardware. We haven't just reached diminishing returns on graphics, we've completely horseshoed and now performance is getting worse with time. Innovation is exclusively the domain of indie games now, and graphics don't really matter in that sphere, so as zoomers get used to playing pixelshit and low poly throwbacks over the years, their aversion to playing older games lessens.

Every game that is released is ultimately competing not only on the short term against other simultaneous releases but also on the long term against all games ever made. When you play a game for the first time it doesn't matter if it's not a new game, if you never played it before it is brand new to you.

Most of the people doing this are doing it for financial reasons. If money wasn't a care for them they would leave or at least reduce it significantly. It's not that they like these types of games more.

This costs 4500-6000 yen to play during its event on DDR.

People don't know what colossal fricking israelites Konami are because rhythm games are so niche, but it's real fricking bad. SDVX, sub + revshare for the owners and it has a gacha for navigators? Yeah, frick right off. I'm glad SMX is giving them some competition for dancing games in the states at least.
