Playtesters and focus groups are the reason why massive numbers of games are balanced like they were made for toddlers. A gameplay consultant would literally tell developers to make skinner box casinos with no challenge to maximize addiction and minimize abrasion.

Sigh... We have been over this thousands of times... These companies provide a valuable service. They help to make sure that games are for everyone. This is not a bad thing. I am sorry that you are all unable to be selfish over the most basic things. Keep whining. I bet it'll do a load of good.

lol exactly. People who shittalk these companies have no idea what they're talking about and probably never developed a game.

Therein lies the issue. Games back then weren't made with the steadily increasing, mentally moronic population in our world in mind.

Games shouldn't be for everyone though.
I don't want them to alter some Match 3 phone shit to try and appeal to me, and conversely trying to alter a dungeon crawler to appeal to the match 3 crowd isn't doing you any favors.
Chase two rabbits, lose them both.

Games as a medium can be accessible without simultaneously forcing every single game to be for every single person. It's like asking a horror movie to not be scary because someone feels left out due to it being too scary. If you start ruining the appeal of genres, then you need to frick off and figure something else out. Short term gain is not worth forsaking years or decades of good faith.

No one needs hyper specific political and social shit in a game to enjoy it. If you do then you don’t actually like the game or games as a whole and are just looking to be pandered to.

Ever game dev and publisher should be legally required to have at least one drunk halo bro who shouts "bro that's gay" whenever they say anything too gay. He'll sit there and tell them the protag should have a rocket launcher and you should drive a monster truck, and they'll all sell a million copies with tears in their eyes.

Wouldn't that just make every game the exact same? Which is what you want to avoid with these firms...right???????

I mean, just say that you do not like these specific firms and be done with it. Obviously you are all biased heavily against these people for no good reason. Be honest already. Sheesh....

lmao I work in software and feel like I've legitimately had this coworker before. There was a middle-aged dude that found /misc/ back when I was working on an electrical hardware controller thing that would talk about "kekistan" and how gay our customers were for building solar farms. Basically everyone else was a white guy, most former military too, so I guess he just felt fine to go off like that. Never got in trouble or anything but it wasn't like the companies I work at now.

Testers should only focus on technical issues, resolving game-breaking bugs, etc.
Only the developers should have any saying in gameplay.

What I don't get about ALL of this is how ideology-chasing has outpaced money-grubbing. Like... Everyone knows what would actually sell games. You only need to look at the gachasphere and its literal billions of dollars annually for jpgs. And yet, companies in the 'real' games industry don't chase that. They chase the disgusting business practices, yeah, micro transactions and games as a scam and all the rest of it. But they put Social Values above actually putting in what sells that shit. They appeal to an ideal - homos and mixed race couples etc - rather than what the market actually wants. They're more interested in creating a demand that doesn't exist, or exists in very limited quantities, than they are in servicing demand that exists.
How does this work with their money-obsessed overlords? How do they justify this to their investors? "We consider making you, the investor, more money to be secondary to forcing a social narrative", how do they SAY that on record without being voted out immediately? It doesn't make sense.

It probably has something to do with this. (Some guy made an ESG thread the other day and I replied with my two cents on why they might not care about losing money anymore. He must have gotten his fee fees hurt and reported it.)
