Gears on Xbox1 looked like shit. Halo 4 had goodbm design for the first time in the series due to someone poached from id who worked in Doom 3, who redid the suit and levels etc. Whoever did cortana made it memorable. Too bad they killed her off in 4. 4 was fine. 5 has younplay as a dindu so there's no way i'm going to play that, and Infinate went back to shit design, so frick that too. 3 was nothing special. 1 was absolutely shit on the original xbox, and i've only played the remaster of 2, which was shit too.
Series sold entirely on hype until 4. Gears was actually a pretty game from the start and half decent to play. 2 killed the series though and everything afterward was an abortion.

Horde is a great example of how strong those elements can be and how well they work together, the new hordes have been absolute trash, every aspect of it fails somehow

100% agree and if they actually make it open world I'm not even going to bother playing it. 5 was the first Gears game I didn't finish, the side mission content and sled bullshit just felt like pointless filler, and a skill tree for Jack just seemed a low-effort tack-on, like if they added 'RPG elements' they can appease some investor or whatever.
I'm sick to death of every game needing to hop on the open-world bandwagon or be consigned to irrelevancy. The best parts of Gears were the slew of "that part" encounters the game would throw at you, where you're inevitably stuck for hours because the enemies, weapons, and level are all working against you, and you have to either get supremely lucky or puzzle out a strategy to finally limp through in the end. Open world takes those moments and just kneecaps them and leaves the game feeling significantly worse.
So many western open workd games aren't even remembered fondly. We don't get any GTA or Assassin's Creed like games much and when we do its greeted with a groan.

Judgement is weird. The campaign gets too repetitive because of the pseudo-horde more that's forced upon you, and the awful choices made for the multiplayer. Only thing worth in Judgement is OverRun.

To an extent you're right but at lot of the hatred of open world games as a concept is performative. It's a great idea, especially if the world isn't too big and filled with mundane filler content. BoTW was able to be a refreshing take on an old IP thanks to open world design. It certainly wasn't the most novel way to go about it, but it worked.
I really enjoyed playing Gears 3 multiplayer. I had a 3.5 K/D. I should have saved my stats page before they took down the website.
