Every generation gives Pokemon new abilities. This is meaningless.
Hidden abilities are an entirely new mechanic, given they are obtained differently, but ok sure whatever fits your narrative better, buddy. Even if we don't include HAs, there's still the different battle types and other changes that would be in the rest of the series onwards

Gen 3 had an entire stat mechanics change so drastic that they couldn't allow transfers at the time. Gen 6 had a bunch of hidden mechanics that aren't noticeable on the surface but actually quite important like critical rates doing 1.5 rather than 2 and critical rate ratios changing, bunch of small buffs to various Pokemon, shinies being 1 out of 4000, instead of 8000, being able to relearn egg moves and pass down hidden abilities from any parent, IV breeding, removed permaweather etc.
Along with stuff like Super Training and PSS it could've easily been the best gen if only XY and ORAS weren't rushed and unfinished.
Gen 7 did some cool stuff like lowering burn damage and buffing a few more mons but it also removed a bunch of Gen 6's good features like PSS, Super Training and ingame national dex.
Gen 8 had... wild area.
