Kanto and Johto are just two different places. I personally like the contrast between the more brutalist themes and arrstyle of Gen 1 to the more harmonized natural feel of Johto. It really feels like we changed the world in gen 1. Really makes the fight against the Gen 1 MC at the end more meaningful imo. Johto really feels like Gen 1 part 2 as opposed to later gens being their own things. Almost completely different worlds where nothing the other trains do in the other games effects you.

Gold and Silver are the best games in the series because they actually let you freely travel between regions and the post game is phenomenal. When RSE arrived and you couldn't travel the world, it was a massive disappointment. It was an era when Nintendo was making the games. Satoru Iwata himself worked on GSC making multiple regions possible.

All I'm saying is Johto leaned too much into selling toys and not much else. It's too safe and sanitised. Yes Hoenn has a few of its own like Skitty but there was a better balance of monstrous and cute.
I just don't find the Johto games very compelling as an adult, and agree with those who say it feels like an expansion pack.
Both gens 3 and 5 acknowledged the older players yet got shunned for not rehashing the past. So incredibly sad.

gen 2 is harder than gen 1. In gen 2 you can fill out a team with endgame moves 3-4 badges in. In gen 2 if a mon can't use the elemental punches, you'd better hope it has something good in its learnset or else you're just going to be stuck with headbutt. gym leaders and e4 also have better moves instead of stuff like a rhydon with tail whip, leer, fury attack and arcanine with ember. Neither are "hard" but gen 1 is easy and is more enjoyable for its free approach to exploration and teambuilding.
