johnny "blowjob" he used to give suck jobs behind the 42nd street funcoland back in the 90s. eventually he started hanging around tech/gaming cons and started to pull some very prominent johns. he is basically a legend in the gaming world now. some people say he pitched death stranding during one of his famous "dyson" specials.
Not him but the sound puzzles were garbage. They weren’t even puzzles because the solution was obvious from the beginning, they were just a test to see how well you can discern different sounds.
>a test to see how well you can discern different sounds
sounds like a puzzle to me
if it can filter genelets like the colour puzzles do, all the better
thin skinned homosexual addicted to huffing his own farts. typical indie dev mentality unfortunately. personality wise, he's basically cris if cris had actual talent and intelligence
Supposedly the name is autofiltered in his twitch chat
probably because too many morons spammed it in chat thinking it was some sort of "epic own"
I'm a big fan of the Witness and honestly the Looker seems to be coming from a place of love, not hate. It's unfortunate that it seems to have picked up a reputation for being an anti-Witness troll game and not a love letter.
He's talking about his own game there. The Looker is intentionally a joke, and that steam description is a self-depreciating parody of the Witness's description.
>You wake up, alone, on a strangely familiar island full of puzzles that will frustrate and annoy you.
That doesn't sound particularly loving to me
It's a parody. It's not loving or hating. It's just comedy, poking fun at its source material. Jon is a homosexual for not being able to laugh at a lighthearted parody. That's how you can see whether somebody is a stuckup homosexual who takes himself too seriously
>Jon is a homosexual for not being able to laugh at a lighthearted parody
again, I'd like to see something more than just a wordfilter on twitch. Blow has not said anything one way or the other about Looker as far as I'm aware.

surely Jonathan will discuss the elephant in the room and tell his opinions on such a prominent and controversial parody on his arguably greatest work? Surely..? Surely...
>won't give his opinion on a movie he watched with friends - needs a full month to digest it >happy to shit on games he's playing for the first time live on stream.
I like his actual games and agree in principle with a lot of his programming views, but every fricking time he opens his mouth about video games he can't help but say the stupidest possible fricking garbage
if he'd just shut the ever loving frick up and keep making games I'd have no problem
He's a mediocre game developer who convinced himself and a small number of fanboys that he is a genius. That's how we got that abomination that is the witness. Thankfully, it seems he came to his sense and is now working on some sokobon shovelware that hipsters will pretend is a work of genius because they don't know any better.
This. Everyone play The Looker (free on Gaben) for a half-hour and you will now understand the entirety of The Witness.
Jon Blow is not a good software developer.
There was no "slump." Look at all the FPS and RPG garbage the west was pumping out at the time, but nobody says they were in a slump.
[...]
name 5 good japanese indie games besides cave story
Off the top of my head, there's Bayonneta, Killer 7, Sakuna, Jelly no Puzzle, 13 Sentinels. All made by different devs and all better games than anything made by those hipster jerkoffs.
Nah. Here he is legit.
I only looked up other interviews with him because of this video.
In other videos, he is vague as frick - and comes across as a pseud.
Here he says what he needs to, it sounds genuine, and actually gives the impression that he might be the smartest person in that room.
>Here he says what he needs to, it sounds genuine, and actually gives the impression that he might be the smartest person in that room.
In the Indie Game documentary, he conducted himself in a professional manner far above the other developers that were interviewed. I was quite impressed with him.
>gives the impression that he might be the smartest person in that room
That's how hacks manage to fool idiots like you since you lack the intellect to assess the actual content of what he says, you focus on gestural cues to tell you whether you should take him seriously or not. This is cattle like behavior. You are basically a social amoeba, barely sentient.
I did. He's a phony who played one zelda game and pretended to have played dark souls so he can give his hipster talk about how good games used to be man, but like now the japs they like forgot what makes games so great maaaan. To this day he hasn't played any japanese games, but I'm sure he has strong opinions about them.
You sound like a neckbeard
I said he comes across as a pseud because of how vague he is in other videos. How is that not focussing on content?
I listened to one video, agreed with him for the most part - at the very least, saw potential for maybe some interesting thoughts from an established game dev - and then tapped out during the next interview I watched.
Nah. Here he is legit.

hello blow, welcome to Ganker, you are a fricking gay.
Would you be so kind as to name some games? Don't be like Joe Blow and talk about games you haven't even played or don't exist. Go ahead. Name two. I'll make it easy on ya.
Yeah, that's the one game Joe Blow played and used to generalize about all japanese games. It's what he's talking about in that video.
Tales of Berseria
Persona 5
there's two games, looking forward to the cope
Sorry, I don't play RPGs. They're for autistic manchildren. It's hard to think of western games that treat people like idiots because they all have the same controls and just involve shooting stuff so there's nothing to explain beyond point with the right stick and shoot with the trigger.
[...]
at that time there were plenty of great western indie games and 0 japanese indie games. its still the same now
Japanese indies have always existed, but companies like Vannila and Platinum don't count for some reason. And ironically, all the self-styled western indie game devs are constantly ripping off japanese games both old and new. Hollow is the poster child of western indie games and it's just a collection of mechanics copied from various japanese games with a story and setting copied from Dark Souls.
>Japanese games suck because they are handhold-y
this is stupid though, because at the time (and still is to an extent) this was the game industry as a whole. This wasnt specifically a japanese trait, this was what everything was like.
Super Meat Boy is even simpler than the original Super Mario Bros and relies on decades of familiarity with similar games. Like I said in my previous post, there's no need to handhold if the game is so simple that a three year old and understand it's mechanics which in the case of super meat boy is just jump over the sawblade. It's a one button game that doesn't even have enemies. It's impossible to get lost or confused about anything in it.
Edmund is the only legitimate game dev / artist out of that generation (yeah anons hate him here). Blow is extremely pretentious and seems like an arthouse snob type but he can atleast he can sort of back it up. Fish was an idea guy who couldn't do anything and that's why he never made a 2nd game
Yeah it seems like Blow and Fish were mostly one hit wonders who just got lucky, back when indie games were bigger. I had no idea Fish was nearly 40 and Blow was 50 because both act like 20 something nu-male hipsters, and both are insufferable to listen to or watch play any game.
I like his stuff on programming. As somebody getting into it, he's a nice counterbalance against all the people saying "just learn C#/Java/Python don't worry about low level stuff it doesn't matter." I don't care for anything else he has to say.
> 0 japanese indie games
doujinsoft has been a big thing forever...
there were even large well known ones that were popular enough to translate into english and get big in a western audience. >la mulana >cave story
if they were really in the know, they would be playing ikki, hikware, etc.
>this was what everything was like.
no it wasnt. not indie games. the guy who made super meat boy is literlly sitting right there in the video
thats a figure of speech you autist
there were american and japanese games that differed from the formula of course, blow even mentions dark souls in the video.
This was the prevailing trend in video games at the time, east or west.
This is the homosexual that was having a meltdown over rapper making fun of braid. The little c**t thought his game was some type of high society art work. Vidya games will always be low tier brown doo stain art.
Is it reasonable to expect someone who once had a "good idea" to continue to deliver good ideas? I think a supposed "genius" is insanely rare and what we see far more are people who had a good idea maybe. Im not defending Blow, its just something I've dwelled on before.
He’s a smart guy, and ultimately I think you need autists like him. The way he communicates these things can be uncomfortable for a lot of people, but I think he’s correct with a lot of his thoughts on software development. It’s important to not be black and white about these things. Blow has some interesting things to think about and consider, that’s all.
I like his games but he's insufferable and unironically racist against the Japanese. I'd give anything to wipe his memory of having made The Witness and making him play it with a Japanese logo company up front.
just replayed braid and played the witness for the first time. i shit you not I think this guy really has his head on straight when it comes to puzzle design. It feels like for the most part, he takes a good idea, segments it out into just enough challenge stages before it gets stale, and finishes that idea on a high that gives the player a sense of actual accomplishment on first solve. The witness is seriously good and I think you're a fricktard if you buy a game like it and wind up not liking it.
He's 100% correct about how developers are too afraid of making games too gamey. The Witness offers a very video gamey experience that you simply cannot get elsewhere.
Hack. Braid has not aged well at all nor was it anything special when it first came out other than tackling a narrative in a platformer in a way other than just barely on the surface. Much like, say, Bioshock Infinite, if your intelligence levels are higher than a coconut's, you might deduct early on that there was not much being done that stood out as revolutionary or well done but rather the type of media that juuuuuuuuuust hits that sweet spot of being intelligent enough on the surface to appear to be; in reality, any sort of look deeper than the freshly drying paint reveals a total disaster of grand ideas taken directly from a dictionary and utilized in a way that a child might use office supplies to build a really cool maze for his toy car. It looks neat but you get the idea whomever made it does not understand what exactly they are doing.
High functioning autist. He knows what he likes and doesn't like and is willing to say so even if it's a minor detail like a bridge size. Insecure homosexuals naturally seethe because they don't want to acknowledge that they have low standards.
Puzzle games are the purest form of interactive entertainment and require a lot more thought to execute properly than pretty much any other genre. Only insecure brainlets don't understand this basic fact.

CARES
MY NAME IS
Jake "fix your game" Solomon
not really
just a good programmer, finished some games. dunno why people have this obsessive black&white thinking about other people.
Both
genius game designer, hack writer
legitimate genius. though like most geniuses, he's kind of insane
By insane, you mean a complete and total fricking insufferable c**t, right?
total headcase
but the witness is good
crazy people can make good content
just never be in the same room with them
the witness was trash and you need to be sub 100 IQ to enjoy or find it challenging.
braid was peak kino though
It's actually the opposite. Braid was mindless, Witness filtered people.
this homie got mad at the bird chirping section for sure
Not him but the sound puzzles were garbage. They weren’t even puzzles because the solution was obvious from the beginning, they were just a test to see how well you can discern different sounds.
>a test to see how well you can discern different sounds
sounds like a puzzle to me
if it can filter genelets like the colour puzzles do, all the better
that's not a puzzle it's a hearing test
hearing tests don't expect you to call out the pattern of notes, just whether you heard the sound at all
you got filtered
jokes on you since i never played your shitty game in the first place
yeah and you lost loser
Gonna be honest, you got that backwards bud. Braid for brainlets, the same people who complain about muh line drawing simulator.
thin skinned homosexual addicted to huffing his own farts. typical indie dev mentality unfortunately. personality wise, he's basically cris if cris had actual talent and intelligence
He manages to be both.
gaynius
hack and homosexual
one of the only indie who is not a commie
he is deving at the same time a game and a programming language and his streams on twitch are based
(he is streaming right now btw)

The Looker destroyed him.

How did he do it bros
It has nothing to do with him. Jonblow is an ubiquitous insecure manchild so he's probably in this thread right now seething at us.
>developer has skin that's 0.001 nanometer thick
>play game and livestream it just be a goofy nog like "whoooaaa bro hahaha"
it was the perfect storm

La Mulana 1 and 2, literally the best indie games ever made.

He's the only one who sounds genuine in that video, the others come off as a bunch of gays honestly.
He's totally right here, Japanese games treat you like a drooling moron and it's fricking obnoxious
Americans cannot make a console game that doesnt treat you like a moron either, console gaming is just lame in general
Would you be so kind as to name some games? Don't be like Joe Blow and talk about games you haven't even played or don't exist. Go ahead. Name two. I'll make it easy on ya.
