Admittedly that one works specifically to sell how otherworldly the Shadow Queen is. And even then she's not that different from, say, Hooktail and the other 3D paper monsters. She's still visibly papercraft-y.
He's a badass shonen character in a happy-go-lucky world. He basically appeals to same kind of people that like Kingdom Hearts and Modern Sonic: they're too old for "kiddy shit", but for some reason won't move on to other franchises.
You know, I would love see an actual character arc for Geno this time but it's probably not going to happen since it looks like a 1/1 remake storywise.
unironically my biggest hope and dream for the inevitable next smash game (outside of them bringing the whole roster back again, which they've already said is extremely unlikely) is that they add mallow and leave geno in mii costume hell

What a weird looking game tbh. I obviously haven't played the original, but I've played most of the Mario & Luigi and a bunch of the Paper Mario games. This just looks super outdated, for obvious reasons, and ugly as hell. Can't say it excites me one bit and I do wonder how well this appeals to other people that also have zero nostalgia for this game.
