valve are big boys, they can port their engine to ARM no problem. it's much more likely to be metal that they have a stick up their ass about.
        >apple doesn't even support the intel macs anymore
yes they do? they no longer produce the hardware, but they still offer software updates for intel macs and will for at least a few years.
i'm sure valve loathes the idea of making universal binaries and using apple's snowflake APIs for a very small portion of their userbase, but they definitely could, they just don't want to.

It's the other way around, Mac dropped support for modern processing and graphics architectures to peddle their own garbage and no dev is going to more than double their efforts to support 1% of the market. This will end when the same way thunderbolt ended.

apple moneyhatted ports from a few devs because they think it's a good showcase of their hardware. it won't last forever, and valve isn't relevant enough for apple to bribe them.

            Anonymous

That's... how it works. You moneyhat to get releases on your platforms, unless you own your studios. That's how entire industry works. Why would it be different for Apple and "not last forever"? What you're saying doesn't make much sense.

              Anonymous

it's not like it was the first time they tried this and failed
there is no public sale figures but I bet those ports sold like shit because none is convinced that mac is a platform for gaymes

              Anonymous

other gaming platforms e.g. steam, xbox, playstation, switch, they all have a large established userbase, and anyone making a game wants to release on them because they know the game will sell there.
almost no one looks at macs and thinks "we need a mac port of our game, that's a big market." most devs wouldn't spend time and money on a port maybe 10k people will play versus hundreds of thousands or even millions on any other platform.
apple is currently trying to flex the power of apple silicon and video games are a longstanding way of flexing hardware, so they moneyhatted a few big games that otherwise had absolutely no chance of ever targeting a mac release.
apple won't do this forever because core gamers aren't a market they sincerely care about. they let apple arcade devs push the boundaries a bit for what games belong on the service, but they're obviously targeting mobile gamers, and simply trying to make subscription revenue by offering mobile games you pay a subscription for in exchange for no ads or microtransactions.
apple wants to impress the general public by showing off that macs can run new AAA video games. they don't actually care about making mac a viable gaming platform, and they're going to stop moneyhatting ports in a few years when it's no longer tangibly benefiting them.
what i said makes perfect sense if you're not deepthroating tim cook.

Valve uses SDL and Vulkan on their games.
MoltenVK translates Vulkan into Metal, and it's included automatically on mac versions of the SDK.
All they would have to do is recompile the game + libraries on an apple silicon mac and it'd work.
It's literally just a case of them being too lazy to do so.

Most of their issue with MoltenVK stems from the fact that they're an emulator, having to handle a variety of different games.
However in Valve's case, they only have to work with a single game that uses Vulkan from the start, which MoltenVK then translates to Metal.
Still, it's fricking moronic how Apple won't just support Vulkan natively.

It's almost like constantly breaking compatibility and keep changing your CPU architecture means that its not worth the effort to keep up. Microsoft only broke compatibility with 16-bit Windows apps 30 years later in comparison by making Windows 11 64-bit only, and even then there is OTVDM.

Ironic that when studying marketing in college we kept making fun of Apple and the audience they target to buy their products

    >I am okay with making an exception to my views on anti-consumer business practices like this, because it is more important to keep up appearances online by submitting to the perceived peer pressure of making fun of Apple users

The existence of Apple is anti-human and should absolutely be suppressed at any opportunity.

I make an exception for Applegays when it comes to anti-consumer business practices in the same way I make an exception for dying in a car crash is bad when it comes to moronic drivers going too fast. If you're going out of your way to act like a moron despite everyone warning you about it then enjoy the consequences of your actions

Why would Macgays even care? They are too busy huffing their own farts and being homosexuals to even care about vidya

Proton itself doesn't support Mac and CS2 can't be run through wine

It's just a normal Unix. It isn't locked down in the slightest, most of it is open source outside of the graphical interface.

thats not a whole os, thats just parts. Thats like saying if notepad and mspaint was made open source, windows was open source

This is in fact the entire operating system except for the apple stink and a graphical window manager.
