There was no saving Kalos, it was going to be held back by the Kanto worship and other poor decisions no matter how many new story events they shoved Zygarde into. Third versions have never made the kinds of improvements Kalos needed to be good.

B2W2 expanded Unova significantly and stopped the game progression from being a literal circle, Southern Kalos and a new progression route would improve Kalos just as much.
Kanto worship would have done its purpose with XY and so Z could be its own thing, just like Ultra Changes doesn't shove so much KANTOOOO down your throat as vanilla SM or the SS DLC focuses more on the region itself instead of having callbacks every 5 steps.

this, the problem isn't even that shillmons and pseudo-legendaries got megas but that not enough megas went to shitmons like dunsparce
if they had added more megas in gen 7 and 8 this wouldn't have been as much of a problem
Adding more megas wouldn't make the gimmick better. There would only ever be a small number of good megas, with everything else being worse off than any other buff the pokemon could've gotten.
I'd imagine Zygarde's Complete forme not getting shafted in its own game compared to as it did in Sun/Moon, along with getting a new beefed up Aura-related ability to actually counter its Xerneas & Yveltal along with the Complete forme not being a lame battle-only transformation gimmick. Complete forme is so radically different from Zygarde-50% and too good of a design to be wasted as zen-mode version 1.2
No one wants to make Pokemon Z because they want clout as they're developing it, but they can't get clout because the moment it picks up traction, the lawyers will ascend from the depths of hell to DMCA and C&D the hell out of it.
Gonna be honest, I hated 3rd Versions after Gen 3. Yellow and Crystal were pretty lite updates, and and Emerald was a sort of deluxe edition which bundled Ruby/Sapphire content in one game. I wouldn't call them definitive necessarily, because the originals were alright standalone games. But Platinum was so much more polished and had so much more exclusive content that I started to dislike DP retroactively. It runs slower, has less Pokemon, less online functionality, no Distortion World, and there are "new" Pokemon like Rotom and Giratina O which were unavailable before. Now I will never play DP again.
BW2 was a decent game that filled the same space as a 3rd Version, but coexisting with the original instead of replacing it. The most optimal way to play Gen 5 is to have both games for all the content.
