Laptops exist for a reason, but they’re shitty gaming devices for exactly this reason.
The deck weighs in at about a pound and a half, is comfortable to hold for longer play sessions, and gets enough battery life that I can play for a few hours before going home and plugging in. The fan kicks in a little when you’re being more demanding on the hardware, but it never once has felt hot to the touch.
I’m also trying to be modest about my graphics settings for bigger games. If you want to run the latest and not-so-greatest AAA moviegame slop on ultra settings/60 FPS, then you will be disappointed in both performance and battery life.
What are some decent cheap laptops? I bought an X1 Carbon with 8th gen i7 and 1440p screen for $400 but I feel like I should have gotten a laptop with dedicated graphics instead.

I ultimately found the screen to cramped/small and didn’t use the deck that often so it was gathering dust.

Everything I do can be done with internet so I never go out so I don't need portable devices
I would advise anyone deciding on which handheld to purchase to consider what types of games they will mostly be playing. If you're mainly playing recent demanding AAA games with built in controller support or PS3/360 era emulation then the Ally is your best choice, it's got the power and performs better across the board on more troublesome games. (Valheim, for one example, is a SD verified game but runs like absolute shit with dips into the teens even on the lowest settings, while it's a pretty solid 40fps at a little higher settings on the Ally). If your main focus is on older PC games and emulation then the Steam Deck is the one to go with since you'll have access to the track pads, an extra set of back buttons, community control profiles, and you'll also be saving some money.

You can move and aim with joysticks but finetune your aim with gyro like on some Switch games?

As long as the game behaves well when transitioning keyboard to controller input and vice versa, which if not, you would be stuck with gyro emulating joystick input which is worse in terms of sensitivity. Control and Nobeta had this problem. Weirdly enough the demo version of Nobeta did not have this problem though, but yeah.
Sold it, got an ally instead, infinitely better to not have to deal with hacky bullshit workarounds to play games on other platforms (plus all the games that don't work on proton without issues)

just the opposite, deck gets way more support internally and from third parties. Ally is already dealing with bullshit- fortunately that bullshit is just asus being lazy and uncommunicative. No serious issues actually exist on the hardware level (besides shit missed by QC, but that's global, my launch SD had some severe coil whine).
Just a matter of if ally gets the driver updates and general support the deck gets. If it does, it will destroy the deck in years to come.
If not, deck will eventually end up even better. Though, it is a good thing even if the deck gets support over the ally as they're so similarly powered.

It's worth getting one of those $20 powered hubs for when you occasionally have to do shit on the desktop that involves a lot of typing, or transferring files, etc. But I used the HDMI out once to an external monitor, thought it looked shitty, and never hooked it up again.
I think It'd be worth it just to use mouse and keyboard when the trackpad isn't enough. Though there are cheaper 3rd party docks.

I'm probably going to pass on the Steamdeck because I really only enjoy playing emulators and don't really play games that require streaming. I've had my eyes on either the Ayntech Loki or Odin, but I'm waiting for handheld emulation to reach the point that it can flawlessly emulate the PS3. I think it's maybe only a year or two from that.

You have to keep in mind the Steam Deck is a BUDGET HANDHELD, it's literally the cheapest option for mobile PC gaming, so no shit it's going to have a crappy screen and specs compared to everything else.
I already own a top of the line gaming PC with an RTX 4080 GPU and I never leave the house so no point for portables.
