    >Glorified tech demo

It's a better platformer than Mario 64 and Miyamoto has aped it ever since.

Tech demo: 20 second proof of concept program, usually for internal use

Not a tech demo: Full game with finished levels.

Can one really describe Mario 64 levels as being "finished"? Most of them look and feel like they're some kind of alpha stage test levels.

2 great technology demonstrations that are also incredibly fun games, thank you for pointing out their great technological achievements.

I enjoy the game but yes the acclaim for it is 100% nostalgia. I appreciate what the first game did but the sequels shipped already obsolete.

    >calling a game released over 2 years after a console's launch a 'tech demo'

    Sure why not

think my favorite part of these threads is the acclaim is mostly for the series over all and most people will tell you they like the second and warped more. Shitposters are getting sloppy.

There's a reason why you can find many games with gameplay clearly inspired by/ripping off Crash but there's very very few games that have ever tried to be a Mario 64 clone

Considering how shit and gimped the N64 hardware turned out, mario 64 was acceptable

i could never get into this since it was so linear. only ever played like 10 minutes of it, but it feels like temple run: ps1 edition. hold up and jump occasionally, the game.

Some levels you hold right and jump. A couple, you hold down and jump

full 3d motion on a dpad is a very challenging prospect, I can't fault any 5th gen dev for hedging their game with 2.5d.

crash 2 is much better, crash 1 was sold on graphics.

Came here to post HL2 as well. Was pretty cool for it's time but it's literally just "look at our cool physics engine". Again at the time it was neat, but the source engine is a heaping pile of shit by today's standards so it doesn't age well at all.

        what fricking standards?

        >today's standards
He means the ability to handle the PBR meme without having to make to a bunch of hacks. All just so he can quickly drop a ripped model from a recent game into SFM for coomer shenanigans.

      >source engine is a heaping pile of shit by today's standards
False. The source engine is the reason Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines has memorably characters. The facial motions are the best and no other game, no matter what engine, got close to that.

It's a very deliberately crafted campaign, you can call it bad but it ain't just a tech demo.

Right, it's also a shitty boat simulator.

Reading the dev blog about this game really makes me wonder where the autism has gone in recent years. According to a few parts of the developer's accounts, there was some dude on the team who could spot individual pixels on screen from halfway across a room while dealing with graphics shit, or something crazy like that. Considering the results and subsequent improvements of later Crash titles which pushed the meager PS1 to its ragged edge, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't exaggeration.

    what does that even mean
at least have your insults make sense
like people b***h about "clunky" but that makes sense, it's just a way of saying the controls are shitty, but calling a released full game a tech demo does not make sense

I hate those airboat parts. Frick, HL1 had a lot of bad parts, but god none of them sucked as much as the airboat ones.

Don't understand what's even getting people so mad. A game can be made to be a tech showcase and still come out as a pretty decent or great game after that. You guys should have just said "Yes and it was glorious"

Time splitters 3 had far more expressive characters than any sores engine game.

Timesplitters has muppet character models so I'm not sure if that's that impressive a feat. HL2 models weren't impressive for being just "expressive" though.

The game is fun, it has secrets for completionists, and the protagonist does funny faces.
