It expanded on the melee mechanic that RE4 introduced with its delimbing system that would then go on to be used by Capcom themselves in RE2make. It does some things worse and some things better like the aforementioned delimbing, but Ganker calls every OTS survival horror "a watered down RE4 clone" even its own remake.
It’s really fricking good. They all are in their own ways, even 3 despite its flaws. 2 might be the best action horror game ever made. Just fricking stellar from gameplay to presentation to art direction. Not to mention Isaacs suits are some of the sexiest in all of vidya. Frick dead space is good.
I might be the only DS fan who doesn't like DS2. It has some kino set pieces, but giving Isaac a voice and having him go through another nightmare is lame. Nevermind the railroad CoD structure. main character should have been a random security personnel or a corpo agent
As a general rule I agree with your sentiment regarding horror games, but dead space has always leaned pretty heavily on the side of action. I don’t mind it as an escalation of the conflict. To borrow a tired analogy it’s like Ripley from Alien to Aliens. Sometimes it’s nice to watch the scrappy survivor live long enough to become the badass.
Nah no fricking way. Best thing about the Remake was getting Gunner Wright back. Dead Space 2 is pure kino action horror of the highest degree. Non stop pacing. You go from one set piece to the next. It's literally RE4 tier.
1 has slower pacing and much more backtracking. This is expanded on in the Remake. 2 is set piece after set pieces and you almost never backtrack. The plot being in a city and not in an enclosed claustrophobic environment like the Ishimura reflects this. It has a different tone. Ironically enough, the most survival horror feeling part of the game is when you go back to the Ishimura.

>backtracking
This has never really been a rule. Survival horror isn't Metroidvania. Isaac still controls very sluggishly and you have a limited FOV even when you're not aiming and still need to use melee to conserve your ammo. Although I'm glad that you seem to understand that there was never a rule about the amount of enemies there should be or combat avoidance unlike the rest of the board.
>gatekeeping
Pic related. I'm not the one doing the gatekeeping, Ganker does because it thinks survival horror should strictly be limited to golden age Japanese/AitD style games.
>action horror isn’t a genre, you’re not talking about real genres, stop inventing fake genres
Seems like I hit the nail. Words mean what we collectively decide they do.

I never said that action horror isn't a genre, that's you putting words in my mouth. A game like Alan Wake 1 is action horror for instance.
I'm just saying that Ganker usually uses the term "action horror" when referring to games that are typically known as survival horror outside of here because it thinks they're two different things, when they're usually very closely related. It's a pretty diverse genre that consists of stealth focused stuff like Outlast to action focused stuff like SH and older RE games, to much more action heavy games like RE4 and Dead Space.
I just cleared hydroponics in the remake and I’m absolutely loving it, and I think Wright fricking kills it. My biggest complaint is actually that the rest of his crew because a bunch of Whiny b***hes. Especially the captain. What a downgrade. And now that all he does is whine about Chen the other girl butting heads with him feels less like legitimate arguing and more like she’s just badgering a guy who’s already barely holding together.
That’s one of the few complaints I have with the remake actually. Back when he was silent I could just imagine him reacting however but now that he’s actually talking he interacts with people and reacts to monsters in basically the same way he does in 2. The performance is stellar but I was hoping for a bit more panic on his first ever dive into hell.
All I'm saying is the best parts of DS2 are when the action is crazy and you're quietly exploring a place where people used to live that's now full of hellish monsters. I thought the Nicole stuff was annoying.
If you ever got a chance to play the dlc "Severed" which was only really available for ps3 and Xbox360 and wasn't ported to pc; You play as security personnel Gabe Weller as he's trying to get his girl out. Sadly it's only two chapters, but it was a different take on the situation.
That's wild. I honestly don't think I ever got to play it. I did play the crappy preorder puzzle game and the on rail shooter though, for what that's worth. Also the multiplayer of DS2 alot. It was fun but felt so damn broken
>press kick >expect the character to fricking kicks >instead it plays a 1.5 second animation of the character getting into the position, then kick
>walking in narrow corridor >shadow of a monster flashing by on the floor in front of me >turn back around and search every mili of the path that ive passed through >no monster found
i dont understand the kind of people who would praise this unimmersive garbage
it's a lame re4 wannabe. it hasn't aged well at all.
die
i haven't played it but i believe you!
You should play it anon
>the western equivalent of the best aging action game of all time hasn't aged well
Kys and do it quickly

One of my all time favorite games along with RE4
Personally I like Dead Space just as much as RE4... And Dead Space 2 way more than both. Dead Space 2 is straight up one of my favorite games ever.
Personally I like both of them equally.
That's understandable. Nothing wrong with enjoying three stellar games.
But did you beat the game on hardcore mode?

When will this board learn what survival horror actually means?
1 is survival horror. 2 is not.
Enlighten me on your reasoning please.

All genres and subgenres are liquid and arbitrary. There’s nothing holding you to this pointless gatekeeping but your own autism

2 turned Isaac into a superhero instead of a normal guy and was more Marvel than horror
>stick with me,I'm full of bad ideas
He literally was the sole survivor of the Ishimura. He's a Chad by default. He already has that experience in 2.
