Unity is a dumpster fire right now. They announced they were making their own game (Gigaya) only to cancel it three months later and instead invest in a monetization company known for creating a malware installer.

Wat. Godot has great documentation. You can't even add a pull request that adds or changes features without also updating the documentation. It checks and flags your pull requests if you don't do documentation properly.

does godot 4 have anything like the UE5 Nanite? it seems like such a game changer for performance I have trouble thinking anything but the most simple 3d games would do better on anything other than UE5 at this point (assuming they actually use Nanite)

If an engine is this accessible and capable of being used for good games, it will be eventually. No one used Unity seriously for a long time, no one used Gamemaker seriously until like a decade after its release and godot is easier to jump into than either of these things. I understand not caring about it yet but doubting it is just stupid and shortsighted

GameMaker makes you pay a subscription fee just to export desktop binaries of your game, so I'm not surprised.
This means very little. Gamemaker had thousands of "games" made in it that were just posted on the GMC forums back in the day. Quantity of games is meaningless. The thing people are talking about is relevant games. So for Gamemaker you have Undertale, Hotline Miami, Hyper Light Drifter, Spelunky, RoR, VA-11 Hall-A, etc. Some of the biggest indie games of the last decade are Gamemaker games. Godot has not seen this yet, but that's just a matter of time.
Game Maker is clearly worse engine wise than Godot.... You just can't do console versions with Godot so of course Game Maker games will be more popular

How long until someone makes an engine that takes a tiny amount of programming to use
UE5 and unity both have extensive GUI based design formats, with code being mostly optional. I actually tried to learn UE like a year ago with pure focus on all-code C++ (as I am a programmer at my day job, so code doesn't scare me at all) and actually found the experience horrible, because even in unreal engine code-first rather than using the GUI is a second class citizen with less support

if code scares you, it will still be horrible and frustrating because unreal is an enterprise program and will not hold your hand at all. that is to say, unreal and unity are not hard because of programming, they are hard because they are enterprise applications with millions of options and tons of features and you wont know shit about how to do anything (even though there are 20 ways to do literally everything)

if you want to use UE, the overwhelming consensus is that if you can use blueprints to do what you want to do, you should because code is a second class citizen with poor support and documentation
I wish, it's not very beginner friendly. You have to look through their source code as their documentation is unreliable.
Epic had plans to make an intermediate language that isn't as moronic as blueprints or their macro-ridden C++, they even hired the guys that worked on a plugin that did exactly that but I don't know what happened to it.
UE's workflow is so off-putting, it's like a collection of entirely separate programs with different design philosophies glued together.

They do measely 15k on patreon / month and have few sponsors which is peanuts. Honestly there is no way they can finance themselves. I bet its south american money laundering scheme disguised as a game engine.
The patreon is a drop in the ocean compare to their corporate grants. Fun fact: The only reason why they bother supporting C# is because Microsoft specifically sponsors that with a full-time developer.
The bulk of it comes from sponsors that use the engine for their own things or companies like Red Hat who have an interest in promoting FOSS.
Imagine all the beat em up platformers.
