Does Ireland know that 41% of Godot users will fail to release their game?

Probably true. It looks like something written in Python for making Zelda 3 clones.

why bother learning something useless like a programming language when its going to be outmoded within a few years.drag and drop is here and its the future.

I literally learned GDscript in 3 days for a game jam.
It's very simple, especially if you already know python. And sure, it's not like I'm 100% fluent, but the editor knows what I mean so I don't have to remember the exact names of everything.
Trying new engines is not gonna hurt you, and no one can take Godot away from you since it's open source.

what's making a game in godot actualy like?

      Anonymous

It's not too dis-similar to Unity, but is more featureful out of the box with the downside of having less user created tools, though that is slowly changing. For a good looking 3D game, wait for Godot 4. Godot 3 is already great for 2d, but the 3d has pretty poor lighting and PBR, good enough for indy devs though

      Anoynmous

eh it's a bit janky at times but it's usable! the text editor is built into it which is why I chose it over unity (it's been 6 years since I touched unity so I don't know about if unity has the script editor built in or not but I do remember very long load times when it loaded up visual studio)

Pretty cool once you get the concept of nodes down.

For 2D it's currently the best tool out there. It's clean but has a ton of shit built in I expected to have to do myself. If you know any other programming language GDScript is piss easy, it's mostly Python with the serial numbers filed off. Which sounds slow but it's never been the bottleneck for me since all the heavy stuff is already done in native C++.

On the other hand I've noticed hiccups with rendering/shader compilation, so I wouldn't use it for serious 3D yet. I hope 4.0 finally sorts that shit out. I kept seeing fixes delayed to focus on that.

W4 can't legally turn Godot into commercial bullshit because they don't own the rights to huge parts of the source written by volunteers

Oh hey, Godot. The 'language' that started the trend of sanitizing standardized programming terms used decades prior that Github and others followed suit (with Unreal playing catchup in the past week) with in the name of being progressive.

Good luck having a master branch on any modern repo.

i unironically prefer main, simply because it's shorter to type

Then use letters. A for master, B for RC, C for dev, D & etc for the side-shit to eventually merge back into C.

I love that they're still pushing for people to use blocklist/ignorelist/allowlist. No one fricking will because programmers already know the colours aren't relating to actual skin tones.

Who in their right fricking minds hears blacklist/whitelist and relate it to fricking race? Christ that's fricking moronic. I occasionally put some profanity in my shit for fun but not once did that ever occur to me.

Same with Master/Slave, since the hardware works exactly in definition with the terms. If you're hooking up a slave drive and the first thing that comes to mind is whipping black people, something's wrong with you.

Yeah it's fricking wild. I know race obsession is rampant these days but it still baffles me the level of obsession of seeing shit that isn't there. Surprised they haven't pushed for something like changing the name for motherboards because sexism or something, I imagine someone already has.

It is just the diversity hires making up imaginary problems to masquerade their doing nothing as "curating" stuff.

no one, not even the people who wrote the coding standard. they had to go in and fix it because they started using whitelist literally right after explaining alternatives you should use instead.

Then who is this meant to help? It's surely not programmers as it's just telling them to stop using standardized terms for no real reason, terms they themselves still accidentally use. What fricking purpose does this serve?

seems like every indie dev that uses godot spends 80% of their devlogs whining about how it lacks features and caused huge problems with their development that they needed to fix with hacky workarounds.

Not like they are the only ones. Ever read of those poor souls who tried to use unreal engine for 2D?

That's every dev language. You're always stuck having to build your own tools/hacks along the way. It's been the case forever with Unity as well courtesy of its shit interface.
