nah, he gave up on argentina and moved to spain

Wait? Someone actually invested money into a hobby game engine?

yes, they had grants from epic games and some wealthy donations from people who wanted the engine to exist
but it's still a slow piece of shit
      4.1 isn't much more performant than 4.0
now the goal is to improve performance slowly over the 4.x series
      zzzzzzzzzzzzzz too slow
the only thing that can fix it is a total rewrite from the ground up to be full DOD, which is what unity did and now it can do this

while godot still struggles with 1500 basic objects

i hate godot because of how unstable it is, but i don't judge quality by how many objects you can put onscreen in a gay demo

never really encountered any showstoppers, but the physics engine is very janky

          >but i don't judge quality by how many objects you can put onscreen
it severely limits how complex you can make a game with it

You talk a lot of shit, but I bet you don't have anything to back it up. People are so exited to shit on something, but imo as a game dev, godot is actually really good. Not for AAA 3d games though.

Anything is a better option than Argentina.
For starters the government has an official peso to dollar exchange rate which is half the market price, so whenever you receive dollars they racket you with half of that amount.
And Argentine peso is now above 100% yearly inflation.

huh? You can upload arbitrary vertex data to the GPU, write glsl shaders, and use the integrated Bullet physics library.

For a game going for AAA 3d graphics, Godot isn't a great choice, that I'll admit.
It could handle all of the star citizen game mechanics but I think its lighting engine and character animation features are too lackluster for a big team to risk using it

however, a game like Minecraft or really almost all indie games, it could handle just fine

              Anonymous

I think most engines would just shit themselves with Minecraft simply because it needs a very specific coding solution in order to not run like absolute trash.

Godot is flexible enough that you can write your own chunk loading, generation and LOD system.
You can bypass the built-in material system and write whatever shaders you want. It's really very powerful

                Anonymous

Godot can handle that if you are willingly to deal with C++ modules.

                Anonymous

Even c# would probably be fast enough.
Actually, I wrote a fairly fast voxel system in Godot just using gdscript, and c# would make it like 5x faster at least.

                Anonymous

problem with C# in Godot is that it lacks the deep access that you have with modules.

      >The project tapped into reserves to do more hires in order to complete Godot 4.0 (and now 4.1). This was successful and you can now enjoy it! But money is running out as the funding went cashflow negative..
      >So, as we complete migration to the new Godot Foundation, Godot needs to start getting new funding again, so not only can keep the current level of hires (for which it needs to duplicate its funding income) but grow and expand to do more (plenty of great candidates available)..

Contrary to popular belief, Godot isn't best for making games. It's best for making game tools that need custom UIs. Like level editors or map makers.

Nothing is free. All the high-quality open-source projects are bankrolled by big tech companies who use the software in question. Something like Linux is not developed by rando volunteers, companies like Google or IBM pay people to work on it.
If it becomes more trouble than it's worth to work on Godot, then people won't do it. Doesn't matter if you put the source code on Github or not.

Is Godot optimized for 2d games at least?
For example, how much CPU/RAM i expect to use in simple scroller with simple sprites?
I know Unity/Unreal are out of league, which leaves either custom C++ engine or Godot

For 2D as long as you aren’t completely allergic to code I'd just use a framework like monogame.

The only thing Godot is currently missing for 2D is the Switch support (which can be solved by a coder or paying up like 30k for contractors) but supposedly this foundation thing is going to solve that?
I dunno about it's 3D capabilities. I don't think I would use anything but Unreal/writing an inhouse engine unless I was purposefully aiming for an older style of 3D like PS1 painted pixel textures era in which case I guess Godot would probably be fine.

      Anonymous

It's just a legal issue. They can't have Switch code in an open project at all.

        Anonymous

Incidentally they're working on fixing this by establishing a separate sort of "group" that will effectively let you pay for a specialized version of Godot that can export to proprietary platforms
It's only really necessary because of mass legal frickery, but it should solve that problem.

Yes, but they've supposedly found a workaround that doesn't require you to be a programmer or have a lot of cash on hand to contract it out.

I forget where. I just remember it because it was one of the big flaws that kept me away from it for playing around with 2D and I think either the blog for their move to 4.0 or some anons brought it up as a thing they're fixing through this foundation thing.
