is the main dude still in argentina?
nah, he gave up on argentina and moved to spain
yes, they had grants from epic games and some wealthy donations from people who wanted the engine to exist
but it's still a slow piece of shit
4.1 isn't much more performant than 4.0
now the goal is to improve performance slowly over the 4.x series
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz too slow
the only thing that can fix it is a total rewrite from the ground up to be full DOD, which is what unity did and now it can do this
while godot still struggles with 1500 basic objects
i hate godot because of how unstable it is, but i don't judge quality by how many objects you can put onscreen in a gay demo
>how unstable it is
never really encountered any showstoppers, but the physics engine is very janky
>but i don't judge quality by how many objects you can put onscreen
it severely limits how complex you can make a game with it
>it severely limits how complex you can make a game with it
older games did it just fine and are more fun than modern games
>but i don't judge quality by how many objects you can put onscreen
give me ten million dynamic objects with rich state and i'll give you one hell of a cool game
what is rich state?
>uh what does performance matter i only play retro-style games like noita
please be quiet
what's rich state and why aren't you making a game in ue5 since it can handle loads of objects?
>and now it can do this
Mike Acton is no longer there so I have my doubts it will be able to keep doing that for long.
You talk a lot of shit, but I bet you don't have anything to back it up. People are so exited to shit on something, but imo as a game dev, godot is actually really good. Not for AAA 3d games though.
>moved to spain
Why the frick would he come here? He should have moved to Andorra. I bet he must be living in Cuckcelona
Anything is a better option than Argentina.
For starters the government has an official peso to dollar exchange rate which is half the market price, so whenever you receive dollars they racket you with half of that amount.
And Argentine peso is now above 100% yearly inflation.
Wait? Someone actually invested money into a hobby game engine?
>shitdot
i tried it for a while. way too clunky.
No idea why you would use it over gamemaker or unity
>way too clunky.
of all things, I wouldn't call it that
it's nice, but you just can't make anything complex with it
it's just a good flashgame replacement
>it's nice, but you just can't make anything complex with it
huh? You can upload arbitrary vertex data to the GPU, write glsl shaders, and use the integrated Bullet physics library.
What complex project did you envision that Godot wouldn't be able to handle?
star citizen
Star citizen can’t even handle star citizen.
> (Unreal) can’t even handle star citizen.
> thats the joke
For a game going for AAA 3d graphics, Godot isn't a great choice, that I'll admit.
It could handle all of the star citizen game mechanics but I think its lighting engine and character animation features are too lackluster for a big team to risk using it
however, a game like Minecraft or really almost all indie games, it could handle just fine
I think most engines would just shit themselves with Minecraft simply because it needs a very specific coding solution in order to not run like absolute trash.
Godot is flexible enough that you can write your own chunk loading, generation and LOD system.
You can bypass the built-in material system and write whatever shaders you want. It's really very powerful
Godot can handle that if you are willingly to deal with C++ modules.
Even c# would probably be fast enough.
Actually, I wrote a fairly fast voxel system in Godot just using gdscript, and c# would make it like 5x faster at least.
problem with C# in Godot is that it lacks the deep access that you have with modules.
interesting, what kind of deep access would you need?
I'm pretty sure you can still use the Physics/Audio/Rendering servers
>Bankrupt
Bruh it's a free software developed by a bunch of college kids, wtf are you on about
they're begging for money now
>hobby project
still takes time to build and has become a fulltime job for the core devs, the groceries and bills aren't going to pay themself, contributors do unpaid volunteer work though
when do donation-funded projects ever not ask for donations? are you moronic?
>are you moronic?
you certainly are because you have shit tier reading comprehension
what do you mean? you're the moron backpedaling from your intial claim of bankruptcy
you are bankrupt
Do people really spend their money on this shit? I thought it's a hobby project.
another freetard success story
>8 million gone and the engine still can't run a complex 3d game because they're locked into a design that is layers of slow upon more slow
who gives a shit, graphics whoring had kept this industry stagnant for two decades, Haven call of the King, Spore and Minecraft launched two decades and to this day nothing matched the scale of any of those games. Graphics homosexuals should just kill themselves.
>another freetard success story
Blender took over the industry, Linux is used across all major servers, this very website is likely hosted in Apache or nginx and use a database such as MariaDB or PostgreSQL. free software dominate nearly the entire industry with the exception of consumer OS.
>why are unity Black folk so deranged
rent free that their engine suck
you will never finish anything in Unreal
>schizo
/v is infested with reddit schizos, that shit down the entire place
>GODOT ON THE BRINK OF BANKRUPTCY
are you fricking moronic?
>Friendly reminder that Godot does not compete with Unity or Unreal. It's not a commercial product and it does not take part of that market.
TOY ENGINE CONFIRMED
it's for shitters who want to FEEL like they're making a videogame
my bad, they're already bankrupt
>The project tapped into reserves to do more hires in order to complete Godot 4.0 (and now 4.1). This was successful and you can now enjoy it! But money is running out as the funding went cashflow negative..
>So, as we complete migration to the new Godot Foundation, Godot needs to start getting new funding again, so not only can keep the current level of hires (for which it needs to duplicate its funding income) but grow and expand to do more (plenty of great candidates available)..
https://twitter.com/reduzio/status/1679058914547998721
>he doesn't know what open source is
and you don't know what "cashflow negative" means
it may be open source, but it doesn't mean development costs nothing
so? someone else will pick it up if the current team vanishes
waste of time, it's a toy engine
if you want a dependable OSS engine, it'll have to be written from scratch
or wait for O3DE to get good
Contrary to popular belief, Godot isn't best for making games. It's best for making game tools that need custom UIs. Like level editors or map makers.
Hell, you can even just make regular GUIs and it'll still compete with the bloated Electron apps we already have.
jokes on you i'm ganna be making a management game that is basically just spreadsheets
Even if all project leads died overnight you could still use the engine or one of its many forks and people would inevitably rally under a new rebranded version that is still updated by the thousands of contributors that worked on the original.
I don't know why unitygays think this is like their corporate shit, your attempts at doom and gloom are simply not applicable here.
Heh. It'll be fine. I thought it was worse than this.
why are unity Black folk so deranged
God it feels good to be an UnrealChad. I couldn't give less of a shit about other engines and what they do. If they somehow add something Unreal doesn't have (highly unlikely) I'll just make it myself in C++.
I was just starting to learn this and some code while at it. Is there any noob friendly alternative? I guess I should just stick to unity or whatever
unity yeah, or raylib if you just want to code
how does an open-source project go bankrupt?
also where's your source link?
the frick are we talking about this when you provide no evidence for anything you say?
read reduzio on twitter you Black person
https://twitter.com/reduzio/status/1679058914547998721
>I was just starting to learn this and some code while at it
nobody should spend time learning the intricacies of gdscript
it's a meme language
learn C# or C++, real languages that can be used beyond just videogames
>can't read next tweets because the site is broken
frick you elon, i won't join your shithole
what is there even to learn? you actually had to spend time to learn gdscript? this doesn't bode well

>new version was released just 4 days ago
yes, and it's still nowhere near as fast as vanilla unity which is still 2x faster out of the box, not including other optimisations you can do
>THE FOUNDER OF GODOT YOU ILLITERATE Black person
do it right next time, don't link a fricking tweet
>don't link a fricking tweet
yeah, dont link the FRICKING FOUNDER'S OWN WORDS ON THE FINANCIAL STATUS OF GODOT
there needs to be a eradication of morons, you'll be #1 on the list
>and i cant find any news about anything related to money problems for Godot.
the lead talked about it on twitter, there are 10 full time devs in Godot, when they can only realistically pay 3 or 4 long term.
Nothing is free. All the high-quality open-source projects are bankrolled by big tech companies who use the software in question. Something like Linux is not developed by rando volunteers, companies like Google or IBM pay people to work on it.
If it becomes more trouble than it's worth to work on Godot, then people won't do it. Doesn't matter if you put the source code on Github or not.
If I put my dick in your mum she'll squirt. What is your point?
That it is in fact possible for an open-source project to run out of money, it happens all the time.
it'll slow down in updates, yes. shouting out that the project is dead is misleading and gay.
who will be the toby fox of godot?

Why is there a schizo for everything now? Final Fantasy threads have a schizo, Isaac threads had a schizo, Archie Sonic has a schizo, Pizza Tower has a schizo, Valve's Artifact has a schizo, even barneygay is still around.
What is the connection? What is their motive? Or is it just raw, misaimed passion that can't be satiated? We may never know. Good luck Godotbros.
reagan closed down the asylums
THEY REALLY DAMAGE CONTROLLING THE TOY ENGINE OML LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
you're saying it yourself, toy engine. just how many updates do you think godot needs per year? it's not like it's actually competing with unity/unreal, it's perfectly capable for what it intends to do.
do it right. at least put the source in the OP.
schizo is when u laugh at a dying bankrupt engine lmaooooooooooooo
this
just use unity if u want to make a actual real game
godotbros it's over
what went wrong?
you forgot botw schizo, 3rd strike Q schizo, halo schizo and a few others I cannot remember
it's because we reached critical mass of tourism in the 2010s and now there's nobody left to tell them to lurk moar.
mods also don't do their jobs and actively frick with the boards by flaunting the rules and making shit up as they please. sad times
>Why is there a schizo for everything now?
It's Ganker. People like this get themselves banned immediately everywhere else because of how big of a moron they are. So they come here to sperg.
forced memes, aka "millhouse" effect
blame those "best of Ganker" accounts
>Even barneygay is still around
Kek this is good bait
You're just missing the threads. I stumbled into one a month ago.
idk i don't even use godot but i don't hate that it exists or anything
it's not like good games have never been made in it either
>Final Fantasy threads have a schizo, Isaac threads had a schizo, Archie Sonic has a schizo, Pizza Tower has a schizo, Valve's Artifact has a schizo, even barneygay is still around
all me btw
I think it's the new zoomer way to be a troll.
Because we stopped getting rid of them. Remember lancedjack crying because moot personally rangebanned him? Or manlettears getting doxxed because people were sick of his shit?
We have too many false-flagging snoyggers here. When I was a rabid sony fanboy, I did that often because I was overly butthurt over PS3 has no games meme.
tl;dr?
The Godot guy asked for donations on Twitter. That's it. That's all that happened.
it's oooooover!
sell all your godot stocks, it's all coming down!
godot seems ok, people are just fine using other things because they have more youtube tutorials people have been recommending it using it mostly for 2d for a decade anyways this thread feels like I'm reading some melodrama about microsoft and sony you guys need to chill out with some unreal engine horror kino made by middle schoolers
Is Godot optimized for 2d games at least?
For example, how much CPU/RAM i expect to use in simple scroller with simple sprites?
I know Unity/Unreal are out of league, which leaves either custom C++ engine or Godot
>Is Godot optimized for 2d games at least?
it's fine for 2d
for 3d, it's a toy
>People like this get themselves banned immediately everywhere else
is that why you are here?
there's not even anywhere else to discuss videogames on the internet
neogaf is dead
resetera is for troons
what else is there?
reddit? lmao
>it's fine for 2d
Eh well then its fine
Its better than overbloating shit that is Unity
Literally 1GB for empty 2D project what the frick with that???
Godot is perfectly fine for 3D unless you're a AAA game developer.
Name 1 (one) released 3D game made with Godot
Cruelty Squad
That doesn't count, it looks like it was made on World Builder
>moving the goalposts
Cassette Beasts
I said 3D, not sprites on flat planes lmao
>Mario 64 isn’t 3D now
Concession accepted.
Trole'd u lmao I love Godot :^)
You got me, anon
Here I thought you were moronic, but you merely were pretending to be moronic.
>give me a 3d game
game
>no not that
game
>no not that
You're going to do this forever, aren't you?
Cassette beasts
Sonic colors
For 2D as long as you aren’t completely allergic to code I'd just use a framework like monogame.
They handle the annoying boilerplate crap like rendering and system-level input, while you get to structure everything else as you see fit.
I don't know why they're so stubborn on wanting to be a 3D engine instead of improving their 2D tools which are actually pretty good
They could easily be the Unity of 2D games but they're autistic
they wanna be unreal so bad lmaooooooooooooo
toy engine
This is exactly what I've wondered too. It works really well for 2D, kind of like a more flexible GameMaker. But the whole community is full of delusional morons who really, truly think it's gonna be the next big AAA engine.
Best engines for 2D? anything besides Godot and game maker?
Roll your own.
If you can't throw together a 2D game with nothing but SDL you should pick a different line of work.
How about no
Do it.
We used to have to INT 13h AH=0 AL=13h and blit sprites over into the vga ram by hand.
Do it and appreciate how good you have it now.
Nah, too much work
>Do it and appreciate how good you have it now.
People always say that, but increased quality of life comes with more complexity, making everything much harder to really understand in the end.
Bevychads won.
>r*st
Ahahahehahehaheaheha no
Okay, can you guy name me any cons on Godot?
Why the frick you guy hellbent on hating that?
Frick off cris
why do newbies trying to fit in so much easier to spot? what abour them makes them so easy to spot?
Mostly bold, nonsensical statements that sound profound to people who are not knowledgeable in the subject.
>get inspired
>start project
>work on it for several months
>get buried in own code
>get super stressed and drop it
>stop devving for a while
Every fricking time
find a dev partner who has similar tastes in games and write documentation as you develop. use version control and azure or some similar service if you don't already.
worked for me, anyway. never got past prototyping stage before, always got burned out.
stop making crazy ass games unless your autistic and willing to put in 3+ years of dedicated dev time
your a 1-2 person team working part time don't expect to be making games that aren't possible with that
Stop starting new ones and force yourself to pick up an old one.
This is just madness.
I don't understand the point of this thread
Why is some tard trying to start a flame war over an open source engine that's just one of many? If you wanna fanboy for shitnity or shitreal go ahead, idk why have a bone to pick with a game engine for amateurs THOUGH
Because he’s not a game developer, but neither are you.
>reddit spacing
Go back.
shut the frick up newbie moron
it's doing fine for me.
source?
thanks anons, the name of the project is Ghost Hand, you can find it on twitter by looking for GhostHandDev.
i made all the pixel art using Krita, i paint them like you would do a oil painting, things like characters i have to be more careful and do one pixel a time tho.
Looks cool, anon.
did you make this? can you tell me whats the best way making these pixelart sprites
Looking good, name?
Want to work for me doing artwork?
I use a real engine and release games.
if you want to commission something you can contact my discord: galo1
Godot is fine as long as you don't want realism
oh i meant do you want to be an art slave and do free work by "Working" with me on a project
sorry but hands are full at the moment. also I'm poor
lol
>galo1
lmao more like GAYLO
if i wanted to create a simple ps1/n64 style platformer whats the best engine of choice and how long would the process take for a begineer
i think im a quick learner i made a python nft bot in 2 weeks
unity or bevy if you are going to make something beyond a weekend jam game
I would use any other engine if THEY FRICKING ACCEPTED .GLB INSTEAD OF FRICKING FBX I FRICKING HATE THIS SHIT
what's the advantage of glb?
literally everything
it transfers shaders, textures, animations, everything
Seconding "everything."
Anon, i feel you but unreal engine 5 is able to import GLTF/GLB now. However I hate how ue5 is structured. Feels like im modding a game rather than using an engine.
>be sudaca
>see videogame engine is a open market
>unity comes out and cucks you
>about to become an hero
>some chinese come to you
>take money
>scan chinaman
>scape to europe
good ending?
Pretty easy: ~~*(they*~~) don't want viable competition from an engine where the game and its profits are entirely property of the creator.
Don't let them win.
they paid a bunch of youtubers to promote godot
not the wisest expense.
Time to develop a game!
>Godot
>Janky, slow, pozzed
>Unity
>Bloated mess lead by corporate morons
>Unreal
>Bloated mess lead by a Chinese subsidiary
How are things so unfathomably shit
Use pygame
What does pygame have to offer? Has there been anything decent made with it?
It's moronproof to install if you have python and doesn't hold your hand.
Why python and not some variant of c?
i mean as long as you're not doing anything too crazy, you could always make your own using raylib
>raylib
frick off
The internet is full of tutorials
real programmers don't need tutorials and if you're not a programmer you should be using a real engine like unity
if you can't make use of raylib by looking at the cheat sheet and perhaps the examples on the website then you aren't cut out to develop games. i'm not trying to be insulting, but the thing is very straightforward.
Tried raylib
Couldn't figure out how to go fullscreen while setting an explicit refresh rate
Make your own engine
The only thing Godot is currently missing for 2D is the Switch support (which can be solved by a coder or paying up like 30k for contractors) but supposedly this foundation thing is going to solve that?
I dunno about it's 3D capabilities. I don't think I would use anything but Unreal/writing an inhouse engine unless I was purposefully aiming for an older style of 3D like PS1 painted pixel textures era in which case I guess Godot would probably be fine.
It's just a legal issue. They can't have Switch code in an open project at all.
https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/tutorials/platform/consoles.html
Incidentally they're working on fixing this by establishing a separate sort of "group" that will effectively let you pay for a specialized version of Godot that can export to proprietary platforms
It's only really necessary because of mass legal frickery, but it should solve that problem.
Oh well, did not know that.
Where did they mention this though?
I forget where. I just remember it because it was one of the big flaws that kept me away from it for playing around with 2D and I think either the blog for their move to 4.0 or some anons brought it up as a thing they're fixing through this foundation thing.
I think it's mainly been mentioned on Twitter but I think there are blogs on the main website that talk about it?
Yes, but they've supposedly found a workaround that doesn't require you to be a programmer or have a lot of cash on hand to contract it out.
corporations should know by know that if they want open source project to succeed they should hire few competent devs to work on it instead of giving money to the freetards directly.
I hate unity and godot. Just give me an engine with polygonal lighting.
>Engine can't do XY, therefore it's useless
Just choose the right engine for the job, if Godot fits your requirements, then use it. If not not then not.
It's not rocket science
Kindly frick off with your console wars mentality
