Yes and no--honestly, whether or not something is isekai is irrelevant. Escaflowne is fine. Cursed Blood was fine. The fact that Faraway Paladin was isekai didn't stop it from being incredible, very genuine fantasy fiction.
The real problem was so much of it being unable to take itself seriously. Hell, even Dungeon Meshi is a comedy but it's very serious in its characters and world building so to me it escapes the curse. Having everything based on videogame mechanics and surface level is what sucked ass.
Isekai has its issues no doubt, but the one thing you can't say it doesn't have is a genuine love and passion for the material and genre. One might say they love it TOO much, but I digress

Playing anything straight means you can't have the emotional and personal distance from it.
