If they specifically targeted people taking maternity and medical leave then that's a lawsuit waiting for them because that is most definitely discrimination and they will likely have to pay a hefty severance package.
Respawn is based in California, and there it is illegal to fire people for taking parental leave, as well as illegal to fire for someone on medical leave. This extends of course to making that the reason for a later firing. That gives grounds to a wrongful termination suit which in return.
It's also illegal in California to fire people SPECIFICALLY because they have a disability (or any other medical condition), ancestry, sex, ethnicity, religion, age, etc.
So if Respawn expected to save some bucks by firing them because they temporarily had reduced productivity, they will lose a lot more due to these lawsuits now that will most definitely be happening.
