What made it so good?
I enjoyed this game a lot, both 1 and 2 (I pretend 3 doesn't exist).
And it isn't a nostalgia thing, I played both games as an adult and it was the most comfy, most immersive game I have ever played.
The combat was janky and weird at first but after I got the hang of it I was soloing 20 orcs in the valley of mines and sending those motherfrickers to hell.

only the first chapter or whatever is good. you're deluding yourself if you think the shit writing and combat gauntlets after that part were any good.
Yeah this
I only remember the beginning with you doing various chores for the 3 camps and just trying to make it out
I remember I got very close to end but dropped it because it was too boring and repetitive
Anons, I'm playing gothic 1 for the first time and I'm getting filtered hard, especially by the combat.
However I liked Risen from the same developer, and the other aspects of the game seem mostly nice...
Can someone help me?
Things either barely do me any damage and I kill them as a no-brainer (except when they are in packs, and changing the locked enemy becomes cumbersome) or they basically kill me in 1 hit.
The hitboxes also don't help. And when I try to kill enemies in more "creative" ways, like making one fall to death while trying to follow me, I don't get EXP.
I got some points in an escort mission when I realized that the guy I was escorting was immortal and I gained EXP from the things he killed...
But it was very boring and eventually I finished his quest.
I enjoy the game outside combat. I didn't want to cheat, but currently the combat seem so absurd that it takes my joy of playing it - I want to know if I may be doing something wrong, or a way to better experience the combat, or something.
Did you level your weapon skill? One point into 1-handers makes the combat much smoother and easier.
Yes, it helped, but not enough.
Keep leveling strength then. By level 5 you should be strong enough to deal with anything you need to in chapter 1. If something kills you in 1 hit, you shouldn't be fighting it yet.
Honestly, Gothic 1 is the easiest Piranha Bytes game by far.
I hope you didn't fall for the keyboard only controls meme.
I... I did. I'm not sure how much difference it will make, but I will try with a mouse...
This video is Gothic 2 but hopefully it illustrates why using a mouse is a good idea. I do enjoy that it CAN be played exclusively on keyboard though, as when you're casually exploring you only need one hand to do so.
>as when you're casually exploring you only need one hand to do so.
What are you going to do with the other hand?
I second this hard.
I dont know why some gays shill keyboard only, when you can turn around much faster with a mouse. Its also more comfrotable to play with M+K.
I suggest you follow a quest guide, and just dump points into one-handed and strength til you can kill stuff reliably. The early game is way harder than the rest mostly because you don't know where anything is.
do escort quests, theres a guy who takes you to the swampweed camp and another who will take you to the rogues camp. They will kill critters for you and award you XP.
There are a lot of non combat quests in every camp, do them all, join a camp, get an armor and a sword. Pump strength and I suggest getting at least 1 point into one handed training.
Combat against animals is all about your gear, not skill, you cant dodge them in gothic 1, so before you head out to kill animals make sure you are well equipped. Against humans, learn to parry and counter.
Look for a guide, it helps a lot.
You don't have to but you can buy some pants in the old camp. They'll increase the amount of damage you can take by a lot until you get your faction armor. Next level up your one handed skill once to get the better moveset. After that pump all your points into strength until you feel comfortable killing things. As for fighting groups of enemies, pull them one by one. For example: most wild animals will do three warning sounds before they attack once you get within their range. Position yourself in a way that only one enemy will give off a warning. On the third warning they will attack but ONLY the animal that noticed you. Once it runs towards you back off a bit to not pull the rest and 1v1 it. Repeat for the rest. This won't work on humanoid enemies like goblins, humans or orcs since they'll all aggro at once.
In Gothic 1 and 2 as far as I know crits do 10 times as much damage, which is a shitton compared to other RPGs. Your crit chance is basically your 1h or 2h skill. If you wanna make big damage, get your strength up, get a better sword and increase your skill.
Also some enemies are just very strong and not meant to be killed early. You won't have any chance against snappers or lurkers in the early game for example
The progression is what really sold this game to me
You answered your own question for me
It's my favourite game of all time because it's the most immersive game of all time
(me)
The progression, the quest design where even the simplest dumbest fetch quests are fun and rewarding, the ratio of quality and quantity, the map design etc...
I went into great depth about all of these before when we had a legendary comfy 500+ reply gothic thread, it was great
I've meant to play Archolos, but finishing some crpgs atm

Got an archive link or feel like reposting?
I'm actually curious about it.
Frick I don't, but I got some funny / based highlights I saved, will upload them in a minute
Best part of the discussion were anons that played the game on some online servers, I believe it was polish only... Those poles have got a gothic community like you wouldn't believe, made an MMO out of it almost, soulful as frick
Also, I made that thread on /v
I can't believe it was actually a good /v thread, I guess stuff like that does happen once in a millennium
Not that anon but Archolos threads were top tier, especially shortly after the game aired.
Feels like an actual open world and not some rail-roaded autoattack sensory overload nonsense that are made now. A character in a world. Compare it to something recent like Final Fantasy 15 where you can literally be half asleep and get through the combat. Gothic you have to pay attention and earn the progression. I also played G1 and 2 for the first time as an adult and they held my attention like nothing else.
What did you dislike about Gothic 3 that makes you pretend it doesn't exist?
Not OP, but Gothic 3 is probably the worst game I've ever played in my life (Not including meme games)
>Broken even with patches, so barely playable
>trash combat
>bethesda-like empty open world that favors quantity over quality
>due to the previous reason, there's no immersion that made G1&2 so good
>beyond garbage writing, im not sure that the game even has a story, if they even finished that
That game has nothing to do with Gothic. Nameless hero is the protagonist, it's called gothic but otherwise it's garbage. Even if it could be fixed with patches (which it might be today) I still can't think of a worse video game. It's insultingly bad. Even worse than the TES series, and that's not easy to pull off
I got some highlights here, shame I thought I saved more. A few memes and some greentext
Ah right, I always confuse Gothic 3 with Risen 1. Don't know why.
That's because it's the real Gothic 3
>I got some highlights here, shame I thought I saved more.
Lad, until an archive gets nuked having any highlights is as good as having the full thing. You've done well. Here.

Wow what a thread... the actual dev posted too. I love what they are doing with new balance, it doesn't deserve all the hate at all. You guys really went out on them but it's ok because there's insight about it I never knew before and I think everyone should pass it at least once
>the easiest bait in every gothic threads begins
>Everything I don't approve of is so uncomprihensibly stupid that it must be bait
the most annoying homosexual in every thread. Every thread i swear has one of these
Of course you'd double down. You literally use the same phrases and wording as our last Gothic thread mate. Nobody cares about Gothic 3 stop talking about it.
good and believable setting.
characters feel real.
also and the world is hostile enough for you to be scared shitless to go exploring at night or even at day depending on the area
Is there a suggestion of which camp to join in a first playthrough?
It doesn't really matter much if you're going for a melee build, which is what I'd recommend for a first playthrough. Just choose whichever armors and atmosphere you like more.
Old Camp is mandatory if you want to be a mage though.
Go in blind. Do not read walkthroughs, guides where to obtain good items and other stuff. You are meant to roleplay as a total underdog but when you finaly find a good weapon or learn how to play by yourself, it feels so rewarding. First playthrough of G1 is something completely unique, do not ruin that for yourself.
They railroad you into Old Camp for a new player. I prefer New Camp because it ties into Gothic 2 mercenary playthrough. Some people like Swamp camp, I'm not exactly sure why besides the gameplay aspects(without spoiling anything) but it's there and you can pick it I guess.
I think the biggest benefit of joining the sect loonies is it makes the whole of chapter 2 make much more sense, and makes the whole storyline with the sleeper a bit more personal
I like the Swamp Camp layout and aesthetics, it has a pretty chill atmosphere
But yes, story-wise it's the worst and doesn't make much sense going into Gothic 2
>What made it so good?
Archolos
Bite me.
They follow the principle that starting as a victimized shitter and then giving you large qualitative power up stages makes RPG level uppu more fun
Is there any fix for graphical flickering when talking to NPCs? I'm trying to give this game a fair chance since I never did play it start to finish but this shit is driving me up the wall. I've tried compatibility mode, reinstalling, disabling fog and sky effects, nothing has worked.
Install union or spine on top of the steam/gog release.
