Are there any other good sandbox roguelikes?
I can think of Elona, The Doors of Trithius and recently Soulash 2.

I don't know, I mean it's up against real games, and deep dungeon crawlers have had a resurgence lately in the indie scene. Not sure if DF's little tech demo toy of a roguelike will hold up anymore.

Why is it taking so long to include a mode that's been in the game for like a decade?

because it's one dumbass moron refusing to hire a staff so he can israelily keep all the money for himself so he needs to do a million little things that would take a staff 6 daus to do but take one man 6 months to do

      >I've been hitting interface menus one at a time. Jumping, picking things up, climbing, inventory, and conversations (aside from a few gnarly cases) are done. Combat menus, the log, status, and character generation feel like the big ones left to do, but stuff always comes up ha ha. There were so many options buried inside of conversations - I still need to do performances and the secret identity specifier, for example. All menus support keyboard only, mouse only, and hybrid approaches.

      >Work continues on portraits as well, from goblins and kobolds to clothing variations and animal people. New equipment images on the full body tiles for equipment like artifacts and divine weapons also coming, and I think new item images as well.

looks like he suffers from the same addiction to the one-man feature creep style of development as Wolfire Games when they developed Overgrowth.

It worked for him so far.

He hired some autistic coder to work on bugfixing, performance and ports, and maybe help develop the game once all that shit is done, and this had the consequence of forcing him into more modern dev pratices.
DF even has some mulltithreading now.

It has significantly more menus than fort mode which need to be reworked both in terms of design but also to incorporate graphics/ascii artwork in both version. Also, I belive thay toady is also doing some rework on quests and other QoL so as to make it more palatable to non-autists.

Idiocy. Same reason he halted real, meaningful development in the game for years just do add a tileset and UI that is similar at best or shittier at worst.

Adventure mode needs a great deal more work if it's still anything like the .47 version. I just want proper integration of adventurers with fortresses so I can self insert a human swordsman with a harem of tigerwomen/grizzlybearwomen/anacondawomen etc.
Also interracial relationships. It's kind of based that it isn't in the game, but that makes it hard to have a harem of monstergirls.

      Outstandigly based and sophisticated

I mean, as a game, you're not wrong. DF is its own interesting autistic simulator thing but it falls flat pretty hard as game when you can build a bridge and automatically become immune to all outside threats.

Part of of DF original idea was being able to explore the ruins of your destroyed forts as a sort of highscore screen. Things evolved from there and now you can walk across the entire world as an adventurer, and you can visit your own forts regardless if they are abbandoned or not, and you can even steal op items from it.

I used to think DF was some deep complex masterpiece but the steam release revealed that the systems were quite shallow, just caked in layers of obtuse UI. The timescale is completely fricked, the AI is shit, Z levels are infinitely high, dwarven personalities are mostly meaningless, stacking is still broken. The game is really just a fun 2D physics simulator where you watch limbs go flying into bits. It needed a rewrite long ago

The personalities effect a lot of things but unless you sit around bird doging dwarves your never gonna notice any differences. It makes sense why no other games or developers waste there time with such systems as just RNG will give the player the same impression.
