A protagonist you have to play as over the course of the game is, by definition, a forced protagonist. Male or female. All 3 GTA5 protagonists were forced, because refusing to play as them was not an option in the game.
A protagonist that you CAN play as, but can go the entire game never once controlling if you so choose, is an OPTIONAL protagonist, male or female. Since you have the CHOICE over whether or not you play as them throughout the game.
