I've randomly taken an interest in GTA. Should I start with 1 or skip right to 3? What's the best version of each? Which is your favorite?

Skip first two. They suck balls unless you're the kind of autist that sits on the carpet crisscross for 5 hours straight with no breaks. 3-SA are decent the first time. Only actual timelessly good GTA is IV. Top tier physics engine, good acting/writing, and it probably has the most convincing feeling city in a game ever. Missions are mostly boring though
What did you think of the DLCs?
Wank
Pure wank m8 pure wank
TLaD is too short and Billy's "arc" is pathetic. You just roll up on him at the prison and execute him. TBoGT has a lot of interesting content but a lot of the "modes" are incredibly boring. The club management would be a lot better without Joni and you could skip straight to the VIP missions instead of just standing around for five minutes. Drug Wars are hit or miss depending on which mission type you get. You can bring an APC to make things trivially easy but the game tends to give you convoy missions if you do, and the APC cannon can make the target vehicle impossible to drive or just fail the mission. At least the characters are interesting.
Disregard this. 4 sucks wiener. Niko moves like he’s walking through knee high water and the cars feel like boats. Plus the cover mechanic sucks. I would quit after the PS2 and play Bully.
>the cars feel like boats
they feel like actual cars, which made the racing minigames actually fun.
gay tony was fun, but i thought the ending sucked.
the bikergay one seemed like it was going to go somewhere good, but then ended early out of nowhere. it REALLY sucked dick.
>the cars feel like boats

Fun > realism. Every single time.
if you dont think the cars were fun, im sorry, but you're wrong
you'll never fit in, stop pretending
The cars feel like the suspension is made of marshmallows and toothpicks. It's fun, but it's not realistic. Also,
>swing set
it's not gran turismo, but it's certainly more realistic (and more fun, imo) than the other games in the series
project your insecure newbie issues onto someone else queerboy
Look I enjoy fun as much as the next gay, but marshmallow and toothpick suspension isn't remotely realistic unless you're comparing against horribly antiquated examples. If it were a bit stiffer it'd be comparatively ideal, thank god for the modding scene obviously.
repeating bullshit, car handling in gtaiv is the best. You probably cannot drive for shit.
good bait
GTAIV is a very good game but it's not retro.
GTA 1 and London expansions are Amiga-tier eurojank but GTA 2 is fun for what it is despite having little in-common with the later games on the surface level.
>GTAIV is a very good game
Not really, no.
>Should I start with 1 or skip right to 3?
You can take a look. 1 and 2 are alright. Just don't bother trying to beat either
>What's the best version of each?
As far as 3 and Vice City goes the best versions are the re3/VC versions. Basically fan-made PC ports using reverse engineered code. Unfortunately they then got sued for this by Take2 and plans for future ports have been halted. You can still find them on places like archive though. For San Andreas you'll have to download the old PC port and mod the frick outta it.
>Which is your favorite?
San Andreas although it was the inflection point of a ton of shit I don't like about modern GTA, like the weirdly inflexible missions or the fact that it takes several hours of playing through the story to get the good shit to unlock. It's nowhere near as bad as it got in IV or V but it starts in SA. After SA I kinda lost interest, but as you can see other anons might disagree.
any downsides to re3 vs a ps2 emulator?
No
No. If anything it's the opposite. The PS2 versions of 3 and Vice City had a really awful lock-on aiming system that reviewers even complained about at the time. This was fixed in the PC versions and that's what re3 has on as a default. They fixed up the aiming quite a bit in SA
1 is a classic, I know modern GTA audience decided to hate it but you need to remember these are the GTA Online players so they're fricking morons, ignore the consensus opinion on this one. They're fun games, 1 was one of my favorite games as a kid.
gta1 is janky
gta2 is pure kino, dont skip it
play re3/vc and just mod PS2 effects into GTA SA, SilentPatch was the mod iirc
Where's the jank in 1?
Everyone talks about the home console games, but not the GBA game.
Did they patch the definitive edition?
They did and I heard its nowhere near as bad as it was on release, though still subpar. It also doesn't help that the system requirements are also higher than they should be.
I played through the entirety of SA in definitive recently and I don't think I encountered any bugs but the visuals are inconsistent and there's still a lot of janky models and animations. However the lighting in the world is very nice, it's nice to cruise around and look at the world. Annoying that both versions kind of seem subpar now, with new one having nicer looking world and OG having nicer everything else.
get the music out of 1 and 2 and london
pure gold
skip playing them and go straight to 3
and if you dont like 3 then just strip out the music and radio stations
thats pretty much it for 3, vc, sa, lcs, vcs
Are you really thinking about playing the definitive edition? Have you been living under a rock or what? They're unadulterated garbage. Emulate PS2, pirate old pc versions and mod it or buy old Steam version keys and mod it since they took them down off of Steam.
The PS2 trilogy is all that matters, Gta 4 and 5 are forgettable slop. Can't speak for 1 or 2 but rarely have I ever heard anyone give much of a shit about them.
Nah re3 and reVC are the way to play 3 and Vice City these days. For San Andreas you need to get the old PC port and mod the frick outta it. Emulating the PS2 version's a waste of time.
This thread is the first time ever hearing re3, I'll look into it
No problem. Just so you know I encountered one game crashing bug in reVC where using the photo camera crashed the game (and you have to use it for one mission.) The solution was to use the exe labelled Opening Intro rather than the one labelled reVC. This might've been fixed in later versions, I don't know. Hopefully that helps if you run into the same issue
Just installed both and played them. Very cool. Thanks
GTA 1 and 2 are ass and not worth replaying unless you have nostalgia
GTA 3-SA are the peak of the series
GTA 4 is the beginning of the end of the series by focusing on realism and online more than just making a good game
Emulate PS2 versions or use PC versions with re3/reVC sourceports or RGSC Downgrader in San Andreas' case.
Avoid ALL post-2010 re-releases they're all fricking garbage, especially the recent """Definitive"" Edition and mobile ports for obvious reasons, but even the PS3 and Xbox 360 ports and the Steam/R* Launcher versions are plagued with missing music and horrible bugs that frick up the physics and make the rhythm minigames extremely difficult.
>GTA VCS
>GTA VC
>GTA SA
>GTA LCS
>GTA III
>etc
This is the canonical order and you can't refute it
I think you mean chronological.
Sure, why not.
just play GTA 4
I don't want to play as that wankstain tho, fricking euro trash is gay. I ironically play as a nog instead or non degenerate white person
Considering that you had never played any gta before now, you are, most likely, very young or, not likely, very strange.
Depending on your ability to ignore clunkiness play either Vice City or 4 first. 1 and 2, despite being about the same thing, plays so different, that you will never find anon, who, talking about gta in general, would mean first two - consider them separate game line completely.
It would be best to play VC and SA on PS2 if you have one irl. Otherwise find a way to hook up gamepad (there is some loaders and dlls for supporting xinput), also install silent patch for them.
Skip first two like others have said.
>3
>vice city
>SA
>Vice city and liberty virtual stories
>gta China Town (unironically one of my favorite GTA games)
>gta 4 and its dlc
5 is ok at beat in my opinion
>China town wars
Kino. Never see it brought up it feels like a true sequel to gta 2
1 and 2 are different games from a different era, they are the most retro and "arcadey" out of the bunch great games. 2 is definitely the better game, london is also a neat spin off but the worst by far and just a reskin of 1 but guns being incredibly hard to come by. Definitely worth playing them and seeing how much you like them, just don't go in expecting anything more than a british version of APB.
3 - SA are all perfectly fine either on the PS2 or PC ports, the OG xbox ports are also good and the SA port specifically has some unique differences but nothing major.
Other ports are mostly the same but have differences that are a bigger especially the "definitive edition" which is the worst way to play them but it still is the jist of GTA if that's all you have. Has lazy checkpoints, weird graphical issues, a lot of little gameplay issues due to framerate and engine issues.
After SA the only ones worth touching are the "stories" titles which are great, 4 and 5 are not retro so I'll be brief but they are boring and uninspired I'd give them a single playthrough then never touch them again.
