It's not an issue of sales, it's Game Freak considering difficulty modes a small novelty to put in one game and throw out afterwards like many others instead of a core feature. See how they implemented them with them having to be unlocked by beating the game and one game only unlocking an easy mode with the other only unlocking a hard mode.

Difficulty modes serve no real purpose in a Pokemon game, single player isn't balanced like at all the game can be easier or harder depending on the Pokemon you use.
NTA but Terastalization is quite possibly the best gameplay gimmick they've come up with and the focus on exploration and being able to do any of the stuff in the three story segments as you want and on your own pace + they somehow nailed the actual endgame so getting there and getting to do it felt really great this time around.
I like Tera in competitive singles with open team sheets so it's not some random bullshit guessing game.
I hate Tera when it's hidden information or in doubles where it's just another linear bullshit power boosting mechanic.
Incidentally, I loved the Gym battles this time around. Having a type-unrelated Pokémon that Terastalizes into the Gym Leader's trademark type and who also otherwise fits the theming (and the Gym Leader) was a nice touch. Plus, it gave me ideas for my own Gym Leader team (Electric).

I actually have a pretty good schizo theory on Unova, actually. Briars' whole deal is that she wants to study the tera crystals and spread the phenomenon of terastellization to other regions, which we see is possible due to the crystal growth from the ones that Ogerpons original trainer brought to Kitakami. But we also see in Area Zero that the crystal growth tends to be unpredictable, growing straight up through plants and even buildings in the area. My personal theory is that she'll end up getting tainted/controlled by a Dokutaro and end up going manic with her dream, which we've potentially already seen with Sada/Turo and Kieran. Briar will end up discovering how to spread them in the Area Zero dlc epilogue, and since she wants to spread them to other regions, will try to learn how to make them grow as quickly as possible. And the closest region she could begin testing her new crystals? Unova, of course. Boom, BW3 confirmed

You could argue that Pokemon were and still are bigger than Nintendo.
Franchise expanded to be too big to be managed on its own by either Nintendo or Gamefreak, so they made Creatures and TPC to manage the multimedia aspects of the IP. Remember this all happened in the late 90s too, Nintendo was much smaller back then and would spread themselves top thin if they tried to manage the brand on their own and gamefreak has always been tiny.
Even today with Nintendo arguably at their peak they still rely on other companies to help with their multimedia ventures.
Nintendo also owns the Pokemon copyright and all characters included

It was told in a kind of storybook format where they busted into Ogerpon's cave where it's old trainer was residing to steal the masks while it was gone, took 3 of said masks after a scuffle with the trainer, and when Ogerpon came back the place was in ruin and the trainer was gone, with only one mask left on the ground. It's pretty indirect all things considered which is weird, because they outright spelled out that someone was mauled to death by a rampaging Pokemon in the base game
Both the base game and the DLC each have an instance of Pokémon killing a human, but you don't see them, they're just described as part of the backstory. I'd say it's more effective in the main game because you come across the ruins of the place where the attack occurred and you're told what happened by the victim's robot double, who captured the perpetrator.

Can anyone tell me wtf it's a new gimmick per release now? Just make the old more interesting, or focus on making a better story +world/exploration experience.
Technically every new generation added a gimmick or, at least tried to, improve on what was already there.
Gen 2 added two new types and held items.
Gen 3 kicked the old DV and stat exp system away and gave us the current IV/EV system, on top of adding Abilities. And I guess it also added a whole slew of held items with way more variation than gen 2, but that wasn't new.
Gen 4 had the physical/special split.
Gen 5 added Hidden Abilities.
Gen 6 added Megas and Fairy typing.
Gen 7 added Z-moves.
Gen 8 added Dynamax.
Gen 9 added Terastal.
The thing is, since gen 8 they've also been removing things. Not just the megas and Z-moves, but also other moves (RIP Pursuit, Hidden Power and Return, among others) and flat out didn't add some Pokemon back for arbitrary reasons.
Now gen 9 has completely scrapped all the transfer moves and only allows Pokemon to learn what this gen permits them to.
It is a design decision I very much hate.
