That's everything an RPG game needs and one or two of those points were lacking in the others. You call him overrated but the reality is that his prestige is justifiable but you are too grouchy to admit it.

you're right, and that's why CT is a great game. But it's not a 10/10 masterpiece like many people call it, and that's why it's overrated. It's needs to better than just good and fun with a great soundtrack - it needs to be outstanding in at least a couple of areas to be called 10/10, which it is not. CT is an 8.5/10.

Which contemporary RPG with CT do you consider 10/10?

obviously no game is perfect and without flaws, but given this understanding I'd say Xenogears, FF7 and Morrowind are as close to 10/10 as you can get. Xenogears in particular does everything that CT does and does it better, with the exception of combat. Immensely better characters and plot, better setting, better lore and immersion, better music. With the plot, characters and music all being outstanding and best in class which warrant the 10/10.

SNES was an embarrassment of riches for RPGs and this game still managed to stick out as fantastic. Anything else is revisionist history by zoomers who must tear down the Gods of the past, as all soulless youth are bound to do.

SNES RPGs aren't even that good by today's standards, the technical advancement and improvements in combat systems+storytelling has rendered most of them obsolete. The only one that really manages to stick out even today is Romancing SaGa 2
      >inb4 I get accused of "new good old bad"
System Shock 2 is better than Bioshock/Prey
Witcher 1 is better than 2/3
The Iliad and Paradise Lost are still one of the best poems ever written

        Witcher is trash.
Only Paradise Lost is good, read more you stupid pseud.

And what's wrong with that? As the tools and techniques available improve, so do games.
You wouldn't consider cavemen paintings and sculptures high art. There is some historical value artistic merit in creating works with limited resources, but they pale in comparison to ones created with newer tools in sheer quality. This is apparent in paintings, sculptures, cinema and video games. Artists are limited by their tools and experiences.
This is why old movies are generally worse than new ones - they're limited by their lack of colour, lower framerate, defects in film, no voice. But also the lack of experience in how to utilise the cinematography to its fullest, and how to get the actors to act in a way that suits movies, not theatre. You see a similar trend in games, where gameplay in newer games is on average better than older games. Ultrakill/Hyper Demon are much better than Wolfenstein 3D, since they had years of industry giants' experience to learn from.
The only thing that remains constant is storytelling, the written word. This is why Planescape: Torment and Xenogears will remain classics for years to come, despite their garbage gameplay. And this is Chrono Trigger suffers, due to technical limitations there's a limit to how much dialogue they could include. This causes the characters to be underdeveloped, and the story to be overly simplistic. Not to mention the gameplay being worse than newer games in the genre (and even some older, like Final Fantasy V). CT is the equivalent of the Venus of Willendorf, a relic of the past.

I disagree, it has very little to do with age and a lot to do with actual execution.
You mention Romancing SaGa 2, that game is even older than Chrono Trigger yet manages to be much more impressive and still much better to play nowadays, because the scope behind it and the talent of the people who worked on it were on another level, and it's not the only game on the SNES that is still good to this day, even outside the SNES, Ultima V is much older and it's still a better game than CT, so is something like PoR.
Age is not really a good standard to judge games, sure, first and second gen stuff is largely obsolete by now for the average audience and most people won't ever play Spectrum games, or even relatively more recent stuff like Amiga games, but a lot of old arcade stuff holds up perfectly to this day and at best might need a minor visual touch up to resonate with people, things like Tetris are timeless.
RPGs are more "complex" than arcade games, but age is still pretty relative, RS2 is a much better game than something like FFXV, or any FF really, DQ3 is a much better game than most of its successors, which is partly why it's getting yet another remake, CT's faults lie with its design, not its age.

You talk about about cave paintings, but those paintings are impressive for the time they're from and give us meaningful insight from people of that time, we (should) evaluate art diachronically and not synchronically, games are not exceptions, nobody argues whether the caveman who painted the caves in Lascaux was an expressionist because Munch draws like a caveman, and nobody in their right mind says Caravaggio's art has no value anymore because photographs are a thing.

tl:dr; CT's issues are due to the lack of ambition in terms of game design, and the lack of competence in terms of execution, CT is a game that is already obsolete for its time's standards but tries to hide it with pretty graphics and visual gimmicks, like most games to do this day.

While CT has all of this, every time I try to play it for a second time I reach the point where you get Robo and don't touch it again. Also the Akira Toriyama art kinda annoys me, everything he does looks the same

Chrono Trigger is better compared to Sony action or FPS games than real RPGs. It's first and foremost a movie-game that uses stripped-down common game mechanics of its era in service of story.

I honestly feel sorry for actual zoomers because they don't deserve any of this, we should help younger generations not to repeat the mistakes of previous ones, such as thinking that Chrono Trigger is a good game

i don't get this minimalist mentality people have when it comes to rpgs. "bro its good BECAUSE it doesn't have any ambition minimal effort is all you need!" its how you end up with garbage like ys being considered some prestige franchise.
