Just beat this and loved it. Some of the puzzles were kind of bullshit but other than that it was great. What does vrpg think of it?
Just beat this and loved it. Some of the puzzles were kind of bullshit but other than that it was great. What does vrpg think of it?
Its great and the sequel is even better.
>sequel is even better.
So how come it did worse?
Almost no one beat the first game.
First game was a novelty. but it turns new RPG audience has no idea what blobbers are so it confused them.
new rpg audience here
it's not that i find the concept confusing it's that i find it confusing as to why you would design a game this way nowadays
i always assumed grimrock was like that as a deliberate throwback to games past not because that's the best way to do it
>i always assumed grimrock was like that as a deliberate throwback to games past
That's exactly what both games are, yes, why would you think differently?
because that'd make them not for me since i get nothing out of that throwback, hence no purchase 🙂
i think the idea is that people liked those games in the past for a reason, maybe other people would like those games now, even if it was completely new to them. which some did.
Amazing game.
Not bad, but not an RPG.
Don't you get bored of refreshing this board every day so you can make this post in every thread?
Let's not project now, sweaty.
What the frick are you talking about you stupid Black person moron
So it seems that you are actually illiterate and unable to read. You are the 'stupid Black person moron' here. Congratulations, go treat yourself a KFC.
Certainly more of an RPG than jarpigs will ever be.
Dropped when I realized it was a shitty point
and click puzzle game and not a rpg
it's pretty eh, sequel is good though
One of the best games ever made. It perfectly captures the essence of Eye of the Beholder, etc. but with modern graphics and no stupid "quality of life" features that actually ruin the game
give me tips how to start, i got both games for really cheap
Grimrock 1
You want two frontline fighters. You have the following weapon schools: "Swords/Axes/Maces/Unarmed". You can pick any of those you want really, just look at what talents you gain as you progress and synergize with those. An example is a minotaur with a sword. Minotaurs have the headhunter trait, which ups their damage for every skull in your inventory, so we want to make him focused heavily on dishing out melee damage. Sword is our choice because the 50 point talent reduces cooldowns by 50%. We're not going to bother investing in armor, we'll give him heavy armor and just eat the evasion penalty since his DR will be so high, which means we can invest everything in sword. This also means we can ignore Dexterity completely. Swords raise energy so you only need to bring willpower to 10, so just max strength and vitality. Another idea is a monk type fighter, with the fist fighter and aggressive traits, who will have maxed dexterity. Unarmed raises evasion and there's armor without any skill reqs that raises evasion, so we can go all in on unarmed to dodge everything and ignore everything else. Again for stats, max dex, bring will to like 12 or 13 since this guy will be energy starved. No need for str since hes not gunna use it, and no need for vit because he won't get hit much. For a caster you want high will, you definitely want to get Ice to 24 because its insane, and bring spellcraft to 10 so you can wield the best offhand. Then dump spell points into any other spell school of your choosing. Obviously raise will here. For rogue you can make a thrower, a backline stabber, a missile user, your choice. The key here is to focus on one weapon, since character building in grimrock 1 isn't terribly complicated compared to the sequel.
Thank you ill stick to that
>I got all the way to the endgame without realising you could rest
>missed all the dreams
I was wondering why the game gave me so much food.
Great thread OP. Only the millionth thread on this game. Way to dig deep.
Gave it a try a couple of times but the combat always filters me. I love the puzzles and exploration, but any time I encounter an enemy the dread begins
Why bump a thread 3 days later to post that you can't play it? Please explain.
Miserable fricks like you who just complain and and get triggered about minor shit are the reason this board is dead. You and the "not an rpg" spammer. RPGs attract the most insufferable b***hes on the planet.
They're not fans, they're hipsters.
I don't need you. You are not making this board better and I would be quite happy if you left. You are in the way and just taking up space that could be occupied by better posters who find your behavior too revolting to be here. It's quite simple. Why would I want posters that make threads about phone games and DAO all day? This is why gatekeeping is important.
You’re an idiot. He’s not posting about the shit you’re ranting about, he’s literally trying to get into what you think is a good game (dunno, I’ve never played it) and instead of offering help and suggestions you sperg out. If you were a true fan you’d try to steer him away from shitty games and encourage him to play good games, and you’d be happy that what you perceive as beloved classics are getting some attention and can be enjoyed by new players who get to experience them for the first time. Instead, you act like your precious is being taken away.
>he’s literally trying to get into what you think is a good game
If he wanted to play the game he would have played it, case on point you're here arguing about a game you never played. RPGs are not for everyone. A lot of you need to move on to somewhere else.
Oh and another thing, you should have a nice day if you think it's my responsibility to grovel at the feet of anyone who "doesn't get it". I'm tired of these X is bad bait posts.
>If he wanted to play the game he would have played it
He did play it. He was posting about it. You just started sperging out about it and set up a bunch of strawmen to attack.
>you're here arguing about a game you never played
I am not. I'm pointing out how unhinged you are. You're not even responding to anything anyone else is saying, you're simply responding to elaborate mental fictions you've constructed in your own mind. You need to take a break from the internet, bro.
>I am not
You just admitted you're in a thread for a game you never played. You're here to start shit. Frick off kid.
Who’s the one “starting shit”, the guy having a meltdown about gatekeeping and sperging out about mobile games and wishing death on anonymois strangers on 4chins, or myself, who is simply saying that if a new player is having trouble in a game you like, offer advice and share your experience?
but square dancing just sucks, it isn't fun, and realtime dungeon crawlers are awful. what advice is there to give?
No idea. Never cared for this sub-genre. I just found the juxtaposition of the responses that anon received to be quite telling.
notice how he didn't respond to either? bad or good intentions don't matter much.
Fair point. Anon, you have 48 hours, please redeem yourself sir
>If you were a true fan you’d try to steer him away from shitty games and encourage him to play good games, and you’d be happy that what you perceive as beloved classics are getting some attention
not him and he's shit, but i've never understood this line of thinking. it's not like good rpgs are a religion and i want to convert people to save their souls or something. if someone doesn't like a game who gives a shit. like, i can't stand dungeon master clones like grimrock and i know that about myself.
Anon, civilization prospers when old men plant trees whose shade they will never sit in.
you can lead a horse to water, you can't make him drink. rpgs are not even water.
Are you really having a meltdown because someone called you out on samegay necro bumping a thread off page 10? You aren't fooling anyone, you stupid frick.
that doesn't seem like a meltdown
>a meltdown because someone called you out on samegay necro bumping a thread off page 10?
You seem uspet about things that never happened.
I didn't like the combat at first either but it grew on me once I got the hang of it. Maybe you just need to give it another shot, how far did you get?
Don't give it attention. What's wrong with you? Have some standards. Grimrock is a good game, if people don't want to play it that's their loss and it's probably for the best it gatekept them.
>if people don't want to play it that's their loss
>responding to an anon who's responding to an anon who expressed interest in the game and repeatedly tried to play it
What did he mean by this
When I first tried LoG I treated the combat as classic turn based, as in I would stand there and "tank" the enemy's "turn" instead of doing what you're supposed to and move out of reach after doing my own attack(s).
Once I started treating as (a weird sort of) realtime, it clicked for me.
Yes, LoG was my first blobber how can you tell.
>doing what you're supposed to and move out of reach after doing my own attack
not rpg gameplay
Please have a nice day, no one would miss you.
not my turn yet 🙂
>What does vrpg think of it?
Ehhhh.
It's okay.
May Allah forgive me for uttering these words, but I think I prefer blobbers over dungeon crawlers.
It's just one idiot samegayging to start shit who never intended to play the game. Business as usual.
>the wicked flee when no man pursueth
Guilty conscience, anon? Projecting again?
aren't you that guy who constantly samegays?
You got called out and now you're desperately begging for (You)s. Maybe if you actually played games people would want to have a discussion with you.
*gets called out*
>You got called out
*doesn’t play games*
>you don’t even play games
*never wants to discuss anything, only argue*
>no one wants to discuss anything with you
It’s not even pottery at this point it’s just sad.
Solid game. Sequel is a masterpiece.
I beat the first one on hard when it came out. Just bought the sequel for the price of a pint. Not reading any sort of guide and testing out the waters with the default party. I'm getting my ass wrecked but it's pretty fun. Feels spooky and dangerous.
you cand adjust the difficulty level in the sequel. i dont remember if you have the option in the first one too.
I like to take my time figuring out the mechanics, even it means I'll have to reroll when I get too stuck on a hard level. I only play once in a while, this will take some time. Feels a bit overwhelming, but in a good kind of way.
Is it just me or are the enemies in LoG2 extraordinarily spongey? I swear a basic skeleton has something like 500hp with how many hits I have to land on it.
I think so too. Just started it today. It's definitely detrimental to the feel of the game. Because there's a lot of moments that aren't hard, just annoying, because you have to dance with a single enemy for ages to kill them.
>because you have to dance with a single enemy for ages to kill them.
Trust me, you definitely don't.
That looks cool but isn't that the end game? The first hour or three of the game feels like it's all about dancing and trying to wack a single enemy over and over again.
>That looks cool but isn't that the end game
No, thats like first 1/4 of the game. End game is walking around nuking shit with weapon specials.
That's super early in the game.
Ah okay. Maybe I am not building my characters correctly then.
Same brother, same. My first reroll is better than the default party, but it ain't great yet. We'll get there eventually. Don't want to read too much into guides yet, it's nice figuring things out.
Yeah I agree, looking at a guide or walkthrough just spoils it. I've rerolled once already as well, and my new party is also better than my old one but not by a significant amount. I imagine there's probably a few really good combinations that it takes some playtime to realize the full potential of from the start, if anons are doing crazy shit like that from the very beginning. My strategy right now is mostly just kiting and slowly whittling down enemies and running if I run out of resources to rest.
Playing on normal cause on hard the game doesn't seem significantly harder, just more frustrating like it takes longer to get anything done. But I have save only on crystals on so I can't save scum.
You'll regret that. There are a few puzzles, most notably spike traps, where you won't know where the levers are until you search and take loads of damage, possibly dying.
>95 protection
I definitely don't use potions enough.
I see that and then I think about how my Level 8 Fighter just did 14 damage in a hit on a giant crab.
I'm on normal. I probably just need to get the hang of special attacks or something. Or chuck grenades at everything.
The room with brass key and four skellys is giving me a hard time, I'm either gonna have to potionspam or reroll with a better party
Telefrag them. Not sure why the janny keeps deleting answers to your questions. They really do not like grimrock.
I finally realised I was playing like an ass trying to bruteforce fights while not using special attacks well. I use space to my advantage better too. The whole level can be used to your advantage instead of fighting in a shit corridor.
>find secret 2x2 room behind philosopher's stone
>there's another secret button inside
>why would they put a secret room inside a secret room?
>it closes the door behind you
>what's the point?
>a few minutes later, have to fight three mobs
>bring them to secret room
>close the door behind each
>murder them one by one
I play on hard but I do use a bit of artifical saving. Doesn't feel like save scumming since I don't quickload to rescue every time I take a shit decision. But I get it, I might try to use it even less, now that I'm figuring out the mechanics better.
after taking a few more tries to beat them I only now realised there was a lever to free the tp and be able to telefrag them...
oh welp, it was plenty of fun anyway
b-but that would be cheating, no? If I have to resort to this now, I'll barely be able to face enemies moving forward. Besides, I'm pretty sure the grate closes access to entrance tp once they pop out.
The game is all about finding clever solutions to battles. It's what the devs intended and there's tons of secret little strategies like this.
How do I stop wanting to do a meme all-one-class run like mutating ratling alchemists or four elementalist wizards?
>mutating ratling alchemists
i refuse to talk to any grimrock player that didnt have one of these in their party.
>rat eats 3 cheeses
>+1 stat boost
What the frick.
No one has as many friends as the rat with many cheeses.
Some rats get all the cheese.
I tried a lot of different party/build combos for LoG2 and in every playthrough I inevitably settled for 2x frontline barbarians with heavy weapons and two backline alchemists, one of which is used for spellcasting and another for another heavy weapon (Accuracy skill allows you to hit from backline). Dodge 3 for 10% faster actions (significant when your heavy ass dildos have 4.5 second delay), max accuracy, max weapon, rest crit. This maximizes melee effectiveness while grid dancing (with fast weapons and dualwielding you just won't use them to full effectiveness because delays are short). Alchemists make frickton of potions, perma str pots more importantly (they duplicate perma plant every 4500 steps, early game basicaly beeline to nearest lotus or w/e its called). Barbarians get more str as they level up. Just chunk monsters with your hulk strength blows with huge weapons.
Missile/throwing weapons may be fun but I can't be arsed to pick them up after every fight.
Heavy weapons do so much more damage than light weapons. It's ridiculous. The only way light weapons can match is if you can reliably dual-wield backstab the enemy.
>Missile/throwing weapons
I swear the throwing/missile ammo just straight up disappears sometimes. You'll be in a small room with nowhere it could have gone and spend 10 minutes looking for a single dagger that's nowhere to be found after the battle.
Throwing in 2 is very strong so I think it's worth the hassle. Not sure about arrows
I just used a tome of health to give +25 HP to my backrow alchemist, I'm a moron
Are there any custom dungeons or mods worth playing?
I had that same question as well and my exceeding laziness makes me unwilling to reinstall either game and give the most popular mods a shot.
It's a shame about the dev quitting when they did because honestly I actually really liked Druidstone.
>first encounter with mimic
very spooky caught me completely off guard
>first encounter with toad
very funny, caught me off guard too
this game is full of sovl, always feels fresh
Did anyone else fall for the firearms trap?
>low damage
>no stat boost to damage
>limited, non-renewable ammunition
>JAMMED! miss 5 turns
>BACKFIRE! frick everyone in the party
The special revolver or whatever it was is such a disappointment
>limited, non-renewable ammunition
cant you make them with an alchemist? it's been some years but i seem to remember they werent that bad as long you use them right.
Alchemists can't make bullets, you just get a metric ton of them.
At first I kept picking up pellets and stuffing them in a box with the first pistol in the event I might decide to try it. When it got nearly full I just chucked it at the beach along with my collection of old sticks and skulls.
>and skulls
Those are useful thoughever
Aren't they only useful for minotaurs? And specifically, only ones with the headhunter trait?
