12-13 is absolutely an appropriate age for kids to care about money, you never counted up the money you got from your birthday and planned out what you were gonna spend it on? I definitely regretted spending so much money on Pokemon cards by the time I hit middle school, never actually had anyone else to play with so they just sat in a tin reminding me of how much money I wasted whenever some new thing came out that my parents didn't want to buy for me -- but! if I still had my own pocket money, I could've gotten it.

Most kids, don't talk about money. I had a paper route from 7-13 to pay for games and pokemon cards. Every other kid I ever knew never cared because their parents gave them allowence, or bought them whatever they wanted. Then again, by buying my own stuff I took better care of it than any of my friends and peers, there were kids I was in school with that had smashed gameboys and beatup pokemon cards, I still have my gameboy and cards almost 25 years later, the games and systems still work. But; I was always envious of kids whos parents bought them the stuff I wanted.

At the point this article was written there were definitely a lot of kids that had "grown out of Pokemon" that looked at their Pokemon collections and thought of all the other shit they wish they had spent that money on instead.

Compare Swooshie and SV's growth vs SM to BotW vs Skyward Sword, Odyssey vs Galaxy, etc.
E.g., SV may have sold 20 million copies but when Odyssey sold 50 mil it shows Pokemon is underperforming.
