The pointless bans in the modern meta, where you could have a match between two completely different teams composed entirely of non-legendary pokemon banned from OU.
Team preview is the gayest shit ever. Of course, I haven’t played Smogon since they were promising to close shop once native online play began in Gen IV, lol.
Team preview is nice for newer gens where mons exist that can win the game if they get a single free turn (which is gay already tbh)

because Zoroark would be absurd without it. Psychics and Ghosts would be living in constant paranoia that whatever they're fighting can shit out a dark pulse and end them in one turn.

They're not pointless if they're actually overpowered. GSC gets by on being a legacy meta. Smogon wasn't around until ADV, and tiering worked very different back then. Most legacy metas do not do bans, which is why you have Tauros and Snorlax in Gens 1 and 2 with 100% usage. The oldest meta to actually do bans after it's over was Gen 5.

Different mindset at the time. People saw something broken and their first reaction wasn't to cry on the forums to get it suspected when they lost, it was to try and work around it and learn how to beat it. The only things banned were the most egregious of the broken stuff that made the game actively worse for its inclusion such as Wobb endless battles in gen 3.
While I don't deny that gamefreak makes the game less competitive each generation with various ill-considered changes and mechanics, smogon's mentality is just as much to blame if not moreso for how they handle it.
I love how Gen2Metagays pretend Snorlax is healthy for the tier by saying "it's a gluemon keeping everything else in check" when Snorax IS BETTER THAN MEWTWO IN UBERS, yet the latter is banned and will never even be entertained the thought.
Instead of simply saying "we don't want to play a Snorlaxless meta cause it's boring". That is a perfectly valid reason for not banning something. Many games with a competitive community system are already like this. Just don't pretend Snorlax doesn't dictate the entire meta as Pokemon in later gens have gotten banned for only pulling half the nonsense Snorlax does.
There was a Snorlaxless GSC ladder a while back and everyone collectively decided it didn't actually matter that much and just went back to standard GSC OU.

The ONLY reason Snorlax was never banned was because people were uncomfortable with banning nonlegendaries back then. Nowadays its too iconic to ban, no one wants to see a drastic change to the gen 2 metagame after all these years.
Snorlax is fine. It's just one Pokemon after all.
GSC is actually neat meta - everything is relatively bulky but spikes + boom being everywhere makes stall only viable against 0 iq morons thinking that "bulky offense" is anything but an easy way to be raped by any actually good team. Also, despite what this image shows, there's plenty of viable Pokemon that can work with proper team building. Did you know that Meganium FRICKS any Snorlax that is not running BD set or Fire Blast?
Gens 2 and 9 perfectly highlight the differences in mentality of their playerbase with hazards as a microcosm of the entire difference in philosophy. Getting rid of hazards in both gens can be really difficult, but one of them organically adapts around it while the other bans the spike setter.
