>Microsoft could have had Grand Theft Auto III on Xbox first if a third-party publishing initiative called "The Star Chamber" hadn't turned down a Rockstar proposal, author Dean Takahashi claims in his new book, The Xbox 360 Uncloaked.
>In an extract published on 1UP, Takahashi reports that under J Allard's direction, The Star Chamber - a group of game managers organised to evaluate game proposals sent to Microsoft - turned down a GTA III proposal, returning it with suggestions to "beef up" the game.
>Rockstar went on to create the game exclusively for PlayStation 2, and it didn't appear on Xbox until much later - by which time the GTA brand was firmly associated with PS2. Further instalments launched first on the Sony format.
Holy shit, what the frick were Microsoft THINKING?!
How different would video game history be if GTA had been Xbox exclusive?
Nothing Ever Happens Shirt $21.68 |
Ape Out Shirt $21.68 |
Nothing Ever Happens Shirt $21.68 |
The same story for Psychonauts...
But who cares?
>The Star Chamber
I wish they went with this name over Grand Theft Auto.
Not really. Rockstar will realise no one wants an XBOX and just port GTA on PS2 in 2003 instead.
GTA3 solidified PS2 as the generation winner early on. Sony would no longer exist if OPs bullshit theory happened.
lol PS2 already had MGS2 and Gran Turismo 3 as exclsuives in 2001, they were already the winners
mgs2 was not nearly as beloved in 2001 as you think it was, zoomie.
yeah it was shit and so is Gran Autismo 3 but they still sold tons of copies
Man, I see a lot of dumb fricking takes on this board but you really outdid yourself with this one anon, great work lmao
You literally weren't there. GTA3 was the biggest phenomenon in gaming history.
I was 19 when gta 3 came out. Sorry buddy. Screeching “ZOOMER ZOOMER” won’t make your dumb statement any more true. Better luck next time.
>still no argument
Yawn.
I mean, it didn't save the Ps2, but it sure as hell made it a huge reason to care about the system. By that time I was growing disinterested in the glorified dvd player, only enjoying a handful of titles. when gta 3 came out, it was a massive holy shit moment for everyone. all my buddies as school, 5th grade mind you lol, were all hooked amd talked of nothing else until 6th gen really got its shit together a few years later.
Nah.
HA
Tell that to the millions of ps1 owners who didn't give a frick what Microsoft was doing.
It had a ton more fps/racers/sports games too
I think that's the other reason (biggest library of no sucky playable games)
Nintendo could probably have tied it if they just put more out for it back then. The quality for exclusives doesn't seem to be there for other consoles
Were the original two GTAs a big deal at the time? Maybe they couldn't have foreseen its cultural importance
There was nothing like it at all, they said "beef it up" not that it sucked
Maybe they expected rockstar to "beef it up" and come back.
They had an audience but it wasn't anywhere near what GTA3 would end up getting.
I'm going to guess that, because Microwiener comes from windows and PC, they didn't think GTA3 would be that monumental of a game. And if they were shown the early prototypes for it, then they definitely saw the Body Harvest assets in there and that might have soured them on making a deal.
>saw the Body Harvest assets in there
What are you referring to exactly?
Wasn't RE4 almost an Xbox exclusive too?
>being a console warrior in 2023(4)
>fighting the console war for consoles from 20 years ago
>in the retro gaming forum
This is what you do on your Friday night?
i do this on multiple forums anon. i didnt even know it was friday.
Microsoft did the same gaslighting to Bungie. "Halo looks pretty good, but our team over here is cooking up Azurik which looks even better!" of course they couldn't be shown Azurik, but it ended up shipping like this
looked out of place compared to Halo, to say the least.
Keep reading the article you copypasted that from and it says exactly what they were thinking
>It wasn't Microsoft's kind of game, since it was a gritty crime game with foul language, abusive treatment of women, and cop killing. Microsoft had a corporate image to maintain and, like Electronic Arts, it avoided that category
Only on /vr/
Video game history probably would have been the same. It would still have been as influential as it was, XBox would probably took a bigger share on the market, but Sony could have team up with Reflections to patch a hole in the catalogue with Driver 3 (that would have been a very different game), and PC crowd would have made Mafia a bestseller after initial seething.
