Core professions are those available in every release of Guild Wars, so they may be chosen as primary professions in any chapter. They are also the only available professions in the Prophecies campaign.
Factions campaign professions
These professions are only available to players who own Factions.1 Role-playing characters may only choose these professions as their primary one if they are created in Cantha, though a character from any continent will also have access to these professions as secondary once they have met the qualifications to change their secondary profession. PvP characters may choose these professions as primary or secondary as long as Factions is attached to the account.

They're a little more competent than 11's trusts. Think they started introducing hero NPCs late into Factions? And then slowly backported them to the base game.
They always had henchmen in the core base game, like Orion, Stefan, Alesia, Reyna that you see in ascalon for example. They use a predetermined skill set and are sometimes lower level for the quests in the area.
Heroes were introduced in the third expansion, Nightfall, because before it came out there was generally a healthy population of players to find for groups.
With heroes like Koss, you can fill a party slot with a character who's skillbar and weapon you customize, as well as do content to upgrade their armor appearance.
It was actually kind of cool doing a 1v1 with 3 heroes as allies because you can tell them to use their skills and control them better.
everyone is in the American district, not dead at all just less people and most are focused on endgame farming to keep the prices low ( the economy is dictated by the players supplying the NPC merchants)
ectos are currently 5k which is lower than what they were during peak player count tbh
Visual wise it aged horrible. Only the last xpacs (desert one and the nordic one) are still nice to look at.

I remember playing the PVP mode at a net cafe and thinking it was breddy neat. I kinda regret my childhood MMO being WoW and even then not much since I had to fight with an older brother for computer time. I miss when people didn't just sit in their isolated discord bubbles.

not in my experience. i named my last address, names of my characters, even the name of the weapon my main wore, and they didn't help me. in the end i just bought the game once more but it hurts to have lost the characters i invested so much time in.
eh, i made my peace with it. got another account and played through the nightfall campain, maybe i'll finish the other three once more one day.
it's really a shame we never got to see utopia, seemed like they had some really cool ideas.

Does this game get by with just the 8 hotbar abilities? I always felt overwhelmed in MMOs with too many things to have to press. I have a better time trying to menu on a controller in DQ and FF11 than playing WoW and FFXIV.
in pve it can get a bit samey, depending on your build,
I did GWAMM on a dagger assassin and I pretty much just spammed my 123 combo with a few buff spells thrown in for 500+ hours.
Some builds have more variety than that though. Most of the casters require a little more brainpower.
The fun comes from making functional team builds (if you aren't just following pvxwiki)
The game has a lot of skills, but IMO one of the big disadvantages of the game is about 75% of them only seem usable against actual players, since mobs in PvE tend to get dumpstered by a handful of strong AoE spells and you don't need anything else.
To be fair that's a bar you only acquire halfway through the campaign on a character that had to go to eotn for title track skills. New players or anons on fresh accounts have alot more variety
that's like the whole point of the game though
your bar has no rupts, no enchantment or hex or stance removal, no conditions, no kds, nothing. all it does is pump out damage and mitigate damage, you play the same way in every single zone, unless you're microing your heroes you're just facerolling the bar and never interacting with anything
actually you do apply bleed, right?
but it's a drop in the bucket, you'd use that skill no matter what it did, definitely aren't changing targets to spread bleed

ok sure but it's 2024 and pvp is dead so it's not like you need to interact with the games systems at all once you start getting the few power elites and pve skills. throwing damage at monsters is more effective than trying to approach every encounter like you're in a pvp battle with carefully timed diversions and blackouts and rigor mortises (i haven't actually pvp'ed since 2005)

I never said I didn't have fun, just that it got pretty samey.
I tried other builds during the grind, like crit barrage bowsin, but I always fell back on daggers because they felt better to play.
Anyway my original point was the 8 skill bar limit will probably have you leaning towards the same subset of skills that you find are strong on mobs, because a ton of the spells are not that useful in PvE. You know, as soon as you find out what Panic is, you're gonna start using it everywhere. Or when you see what a Soul Twisting hero can do, etc. Then those pretty much never change unless you are deliberately trying to make things harder on yourself.

it's not that it's inherently bad, it's that it outperforms any other sin build by far (plus most other builds), you start using it before the tutorial is even over, and there's 0 thought involved

Heart questing was ultimately shallow and the random map events should of had triggers that recognized participating players.

i get that it's fun for you and a lot of other people, but a system inspired by MTG works the same way as MTG does. there's a handful of cards that you can build a viable deck around, and the rest is utter garbage. that isn't "power" in the system, it's making you spend hours reading to learn which 90% of the skills you are never going to play. everyone else just copies the good builds like in every other game, the selection system isn't really relevant at all once you find the meta builds, and you run the meta, or you counterplay the meta, or you just lose, and 99% of any player base is in the first or last group. even when people found some new meta, izzy just nerfed it into the ground and you were back to square one.

I meant you don't really need perfect builds, and can voluntarily give up some of the broken op stuff in exchange for some joy in buildcrafting with constraints

in pvp maybe, even though there are dozens of viable pvp builds
in pve you're just wrong. only the most busted stuff (sf, 55monk) gets counters or nerfs because it's fricking the economy, and even then it still works. there's a power level you have to overcome to beat a pve encounter, and it's not "meta pvx can afk the game with heroes" level. you can run fun less efficient builds and do fine
Its a balance thing for PvP because the end game of GW1 was always PvP focused. If it were more PvE focused end game they'd probably have gone the GW2 route or something similar.

Yes it does. The 8 skill restriction is what makes the combat so good. You have to coordinate skill bars with your party before you go into zones. The added twist is enemies also (generally) follow this rule. It also makes pvp VERY good

Ranger is one of the best solo farmers because of whirling defense. Also with a bit of effort, you can trap your way through most areas. Of course splinter barrage is still one of the best ways to clear zones fairly.
I absolutely love the jade sea, but I fricking hate those pirate mudslime Black folk like you wouldn't believe. I wish the gothic german dudes traded places and the mudslimes stayed in the stone forest instead.

For me it was farming videos set to obscure music that still lives rent free in my head
anything useful in PvE. They had only ONE build that was good: barrage + splinter weapon. You could do other stuff of course but the hardest content basically required this. Ranger was my main, I used Burning Arrow most of the time.

Try playing daggerspam ONLY with Factions available, no Nightfall skills, no EoTN skills AND IN PVP against other people with Nightfall+Prophecies+EoTN skills and you will understand perfectly the ineptitude of the daggersin and just how OP Nightfall spells are.

it was like 260 damage plus deep wound on a 25 second cooldown, mine was like 450 and you could do it twice in a row before you had to go sit in the corner for a minute or two

lol yeah gust sins are so busted that there's a gentleman's agreement to only use them in monthly automated tournaments

If you want a flesh wall you use aotl because you don't care if your melee minions actually hit something, you just want them to pile on the enemies to block them
If you use OoU it means you want to actually deal damage, you use bone fiends period, melee minions are trash at dealing damage and a waste of both skill slot and minion slot in OoU
Only good comparison is DDO and even that's pretty different. It's an rpg before an mmo, focused on team building and skill synergy. The strength of gw is the ability to restat and skill your characters for different situations. Also the lore, art, and music is 10/10. You literally will not find a better game deal for $10

Hell I was so pissed when I made Starcraft 1 maps and NOBODY thought of making let's play/videos of Starcraft 1 maps 🙁 not even when it came to high-ranking PvP Desert Strike & Income Wars competitions.
So what I wanted was a video/the replay of the maps I edited & made to watch people play them and how they played them to see if they use any strategies.
Because there was this one Halloween-themed map where I jokingly added Michael Jackson as a piece of shit summoner where you can only deal 1 damage to him cause he had 255+ armour. So I jokingly added a hardmode beacon that raised his HP from 150 to 2000 as a joke and some lunatic told me him and his group killed him... in hard mode. I'm genuinely curious how the frick he did it cause normally it should be fricking impossible, there's not enough heals and damage to go around to be able to sustainably deal 2000 points of damage.

I was disappointed when Kaineng didn't have a map that looked like the loading screen when I first enter the pier.
I thought it was going to look like this giant pier or airport landing strip... I had no idea what I was looking at was actually the top of many blocky buildings. So I was very refreshed when at least 60% jade sea were open areas instead of labyrinth shit layout (and still pissed off 40% of it was wasted on grassland islands without even giant mountains)
Only thing I can appreciate about GW2 is that it finally put its environment to good use and you didn't feel like an elephant ghost stuck to the ground and the environment yelling at you "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH ME, DON'T YOU DARE INTERACT WITH ME, OH YOU WANT UP? NO UPSIES FOR YOU >:( "

Join [LGIT] instead, it's the biggest and most active alliance in GW1 that basically kept this game alive. They fund the Chinese New Years feast events every year.
The only "problem" is that they're not the best experts at endgame content since they have so many people coming in that haven't played in 15 years.
DoA, UW, FoW, Deep, SoO are b***hfests usually by that 1 tank, but otherwise it's a chill alliance, except it gets a bad rap for being the "oh it's the big non-specialized noob clan" but it's best to stay away from the elitists that aren't even in it for the money, they're in it for the "I NEED TO CLEAR THIS DUNGEON IN UNDER 5 MINUTES FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS, FRICK YOUR LOCKED CHESTS. >:( ".

so you basically only need open world builds
You get 3 build slots and only 2 equipment slots, so you're already being pushed to buy a third one from the get go.
Each class has three elite specs and most of them have more than one build. You can instantly tweak your build based on the situation but that defeats the purpose of build templates.
Now, one equipment + one build slot cost almost as much as a whole character slot, meaning you're getting ripped off big time if you want more slots for your main.
Also the overall interface in GW2 has been cancer for over a decade and the devs refuse to even let you customise it beyond "show/hide this UI element in combat". It's unbelievable how much of a technical downgrade GW2 is compared to its predecessor.

Also it's fricking hilarious how Shiro Tagachi is actually a warrior in disguise, he used warrior animations when attacking. It's clear the assassin was suppose to be some subclass or to be used in combo with the warrior. Or simply SAMURAI > Asscreeds.
Shiro needed this scene in order to make him an imposing threat .... beyond dying over 30 times to him when noobs came unprepared against his impossible odds + battle scars auto healing.
I don't understand why Tagachi was suddenly turning everyone into shiro'kens instead of afflicteds. Was it an advanced form of binding your soul compared to just black plagueing's your ass?

The Shiro'ken were a more directly controllable minion type than the Afflicted which were a demonic corruption working through Shiro's fricked up spirit.

Afflicted weren't really serving Shiro or something he consciously decided to create, they were just a byproduct of him wandering around. His spirit was so toxic and radiating so much evil energies that just coming near him corrupted you into a mindless blob of meat. Of course he took advantage of this and spread some chaos, but Shiro'ken were the actual army he wanted to create to serve him.

Guild Wars feels a lot like Steven Universe(sorry for making that comparison) and Naruto and other shows and things with GREAT potential world design, but horrible execution. I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't get into Guild Wars. It was the only MMO whose golden age I missed (I played UO at launch, FFXI until CoP, WoW until WOTLK, DAOC at launch, etc etc), so I got it a while back. I was completely filtered by the janky movement and dated combat. Even worse, I've been playing GW2 for like 3 years and really like it despite its flaws. Forgive me for my sins.
It's just typical MMO fare from that era and lacks fluidity. The openness when it comes to builds and having multiple classes is really cool though, unfortunately it's just not fun for me to play. And yes, I realize the irony because some of the aforementioned games were very similar in regards to combat (DAOC especially), but I have no doubt I'd feel the same way as I do towards GW1 if I played those games today. That's why I said I missed the boat; I probably would have loved GW1 had I played it at release.

Wealth required to fully deck yourself out in GW is nothing. Basic max armor is cheap. Max weapons are cheap. Only by equipping your 7 heroes with sup vigors and sup dom runes you'll need some actual money but that's still far away from need riches.

I always thought of the Luxon theme as an elegy for the life lost when an ocean was turned to jade by a madman's rage.
The Kurzick theme is more upbeat in tone, even though they're supposed to be the gloomy emos of the setting.
1 has controllable NPC party members allowing you to solo everything so it's essentially 4 long single player games.

GW1's dual class + skill system hasn't been duplicated in other games yet so if you like to mess with builds and party compositions it's definitely worth it.
It was amazing back in the day but I don't know whether it still has the player count to truly live and breathe right now, plus I imagine the remaining playerbase must be made up of hardcore fans who know the game in and out so the entire community has to be different. The times have changed too, when I played it nearly 20 years ago or some shit just being able to play together with so many other people was mind-boggling and extremely appealing coming from a perspective where MP used to be a special occasion when you have someone over, take part in some LAN event or go to an internet cafe.

The ultimate sadness I feel towards GW1 is that, generally, it was the MMO equivalent of Quake3/UnrealTournament99: it demonstrated that a fundamental basis in creating a functional, fun PvP system in an MMO genre could then be used to create a fun and engaging PvE system; the opposite is just not true, which is why there hasn't been a (popular) MMO since that has had good PvP.

I have unironically bought the Complete Edition three days ago because of some anon making a similar thread recently. played about 10 hours, currently level 11. Made some returning player friend and we did most of the tutorial zone with him, good stuff.
I do have my gripes with the combo profession system though. I picked Mesmer as main job and Necromancer as secondary job, I tried around various Mesmer builds but I seem to be doing much better by just dunking all points into Blood Magic (Necromancer). Do you have any recommendation builds/tips as a mesmer early game? I currently just use 7 Blood/Death abilities and 1 Inspiration ability which shields me from fire damage and gives me energy when I get hit
If you're playing Prophecy, mesmers take some time to develop, you still don't have too much Fast-cast points and the nature of the class makes it naturally more useful against tougher high level enemies rather than low level shrimps who die too fast
I know most of the useful Domination damage spells come from Faction and Nightfall campaigns though, so you'll probably have to suffer until you reach Lion's Arch and travel around to unlock more skills

I am doing the first campaign, but I lowkey wanna try the new classes when I do the other two campaigns because they look unique as frick especially Paragon/Dervish. When you go for Nightfall or Factions stories are you forced to create new character? Or can you respec?
If you want to fully play other classes you have to make another character
You can bring your main Mesmer to NF and Faction, and you can unlock the new classes as secondary, but you won't have access to the class' identity attribute since it will be just as a secondary for your main
Do not attempt assassin endgame content, not because assassin is not(he's too Ganker for the job) but because as a tank you have to learn you have to LEARN A LOT, how to pull, ball enemies, learn every dungeon layout, what to do, when to yell at your DPS to AoE those suckers. Blame it on the ping, learn to not get hit by enemies rather than relying on +75% blocks and armour. You'll turn into an elitist.
Mesmer atm has been the meta since 2012. Everyone wants DPS and DPS is braindead easy to play.
Monk again requires some brains to play, not as much as the tank, but still a bit of brains.
It depends on the campaign
Faction is extremely alt-friendly : you level up fast, get your bonus attribute point quests on the tutorial island, and you access the main HUB on the continent with the endgame-ready armor sellers right after you finish the tutorial
NF is a little less so alt friendly because NF is full of dumb tedium : shitty non-cutscenes dialogues that you have to wait through, title grind, lots of annoying back and forth....
Prophecy is either extremely alt-friendly if you know someone who can ferry you to the end of the game with a runner character and if you have enough cash to straight buy the best armor from Droknar and skill tomes to get an optimized build, or extremely slow if you have to re-do the entire campaign from scratch.
I paid $240 to have all 10 classes unlocked with all EotN finished + the 4 PVE titles. Guy told me "listen if you want me to catch all 300 elite skills that'll cost you in the $700+ range"
I was relatively happy with the account he built for me outside of the fact a bunch of DoA wasn't unlocked for all characters, but again only assassins and mesmers belong in DoA, which he did.
He basically min-max optimized it. In that $240 he also had to buy me a shit load of consets cause I told him "speedclear ready account" I NEVER EVER wanted to ever hear "we already have a tank for this, we need a tank for that, you don't have the skills needed" so I got all my elite tomes, all the necessary skills to do end game. Shit was cash.
With that being said as a depressed crypto entrepeneur I ended up only doing Nick Sets once a week and treated GW almost as a job. Doing the anniversary weapons for April gave me some motivation to try all classes.
Warrior is still fricking fun to play with. No aftercast delay, no accidental interrupting yourself like with the elementalist.
and Derv ... derv at first feels weak until he magically spikes the living shit out of everything through a series of combos my brain cannot comprehend + his ability to self heal unlike most melee classes. Derv feels like warrior and assassin had a child or a ranger's stances. Assassin also has some powerful self-healing abilities compared to warriors.

I don't know if they removed it, but back when I made my Mesmer, the end of the tutorial area was an arena fight against another randomly selected player, and I got set up against an obvious newbie Ele spamming Flare.

They can't program for shit, GW2 is still living off the mechanics laid out during development. Every new "feature" is pretty much a heavily edited copy of something already in the game, and after the layoffs from a couple of years ago there is no one left who even knows how the code looks like, much less how it works.
The last programmer to quit was a QA guy who got "promoted" when every other coder left and spent years doing a team's worth of development until he had a nervous breakdown and left the company.
The current one is some other promoted QA engineer who introduced a graphic setting to filter out some invasive vfx. Said filter didn't work on release and made party content almost impossible while not hiding the actually invasive vfx.
You could pay a dozen of pajeets to make GW3 and it would be a better product than anything nu-ArenaNet can make from scratch.

It's "bad" for PvE in the current year of full hero parties because you don't have a lot of direct control over a battle unless you go full damage dealing smite in which case why play Monk in the first place.
Overall, Monk is one of the core pillars of why Guild Wars was such a good game.

They're a little more competent than 11's trusts. Think they started introducing hero NPCs late into Factions? And then slowly backported them to the base game.
They always had henchmen in the core base game, like Orion, Stefan, Alesia, Reyna that you see in ascalon for example. They use a predetermined skill set and are sometimes lower level for the quests in the area.
Heroes were introduced in the third expansion, Nightfall, because before it came out there was generally a healthy population of players to find for groups.
With heroes like Koss, you can fill a party slot with a character who's skillbar and weapon you customize, as well as do content to upgrade their armor appearance.
It was actually kind of cool doing a 1v1 with 3 heroes as allies because you can tell them to use their skills and control them better.
The customization of heros is amazing
it's even better when people figured out which skills the heroes use well and created entire team compositions to stomp pve

Does this game get by with just the 8 hotbar abilities? I always felt overwhelmed in MMOs with too many things to have to press. I have a better time trying to menu on a controller in DQ and FF11 than playing WoW and FFXIV.
in pve it can get a bit samey, depending on your build,
I did GWAMM on a dagger assassin and I pretty much just spammed my 123 combo with a few buff spells thrown in for 500+ hours.
Some builds have more variety than that though. Most of the casters require a little more brainpower.
The fun comes from making functional team builds (if you aren't just following pvxwiki)
The game has a lot of skills, but IMO one of the big disadvantages of the game is about 75% of them only seem usable against actual players, since mobs in PvE tend to get dumpstered by a handful of strong AoE spells and you don't need anything else.

To be fair that's a bar you only acquire halfway through the campaign on a character that had to go to eotn for title track skills. New players or anons on fresh accounts have alot more variety

your bar has no rupts, no enchantment or hex or stance removal, no conditions, no kds, nothing. all it does is pump out damage and mitigate damage, you play the same way in every single zone, unless you're microing your heroes you're just facerolling the bar and never interacting with anything

ok sure but it's 2024 and pvp is dead so it's not like you need to interact with the games systems at all once you start getting the few power elites and pve skills. throwing damage at monsters is more effective than trying to approach every encounter like you're in a pvp battle with carefully timed diversions and blackouts and rigor mortises (i haven't actually pvp'ed since 2005)

I tried other builds during the grind, like crit barrage bowsin, but I always fell back on daggers because they felt better to play.
Anyway my original point was the 8 skill bar limit will probably have you leaning towards the same subset of skills that you find are strong on mobs, because a ton of the spells are not that useful in PvE. You know, as soon as you find out what Panic is, you're gonna start using it everywhere. Or when you see what a Soul Twisting hero can do, etc. Then those pretty much never change unless you are deliberately trying to make things harder on yourself.

i get that it's fun for you and a lot of other people, but a system inspired by MTG works the same way as MTG does. there's a handful of cards that you can build a viable deck around, and the rest is utter garbage. that isn't "power" in the system, it's making you spend hours reading to learn which 90% of the skills you are never going to play. everyone else just copies the good builds like in every other game, the selection system isn't really relevant at all once you find the meta builds, and you run the meta, or you counterplay the meta, or you just lose, and 99% of any player base is in the first or last group. even when people found some new meta, izzy just nerfed it into the ground and you were back to square one.

Yes it does. The 8 skill restriction is what makes the combat so good. You have to coordinate skill bars with your party before you go into zones. The added twist is enemies also (generally) follow this rule. It also makes pvp VERY good

Ranger is one of the best solo farmers because of whirling defense. Also with a bit of effort, you can trap your way through most areas. Of course splinter barrage is still one of the best ways to clear zones fairly.

anything useful in PvE. They had only ONE build that was good: barrage + splinter weapon. You could do other stuff of course but the hardest content basically required this. Ranger was my main, I used Burning Arrow most of the time.

it was like 260 damage plus deep wound on a 25 second cooldown, mine was like 450 and you could do it twice in a row before you had to go sit in the corner for a minute or two

Did you ever try lightning surge? Gives you a hex and a knockdown. I remember having some janky air attunement/lightning surge kd dagger chain build. Was super fun to catch people off guard

Only good comparison is DDO and even that's pretty different. It's an rpg before an mmo, focused on team building and skill synergy. The strength of gw is the ability to restat and skill your characters for different situations. Also the lore, art, and music is 10/10. You literally will not find a better game deal for $10

Hell I was so pissed when I made Starcraft 1 maps and NOBODY thought of making let's play/videos of Starcraft 1 maps 🙁 not even when it came to high-ranking PvP Desert Strike & Income Wars competitions.
So what I wanted was a video/the replay of the maps I edited & made to watch people play them and how they played them to see if they use any strategies.
Because there was this one Halloween-themed map where I jokingly added Michael Jackson as a piece of shit summoner where you can only deal 1 damage to him cause he had 255+ armour. So I jokingly added a hardmode beacon that raised his HP from 150 to 2000 as a joke and some lunatic told me him and his group killed him... in hard mode. I'm genuinely curious how the frick he did it cause normally it should be fricking impossible, there's not enough heals and damage to go around to be able to sustainably deal 2000 points of damage.

I have alot of nostalgia for this game's loading screens. I only had dial-up as a kid so I'd sit and stare at them for hours.
I was disappointed when Kaineng didn't have a map that looked like the loading screen when I first enter the pier.
I thought it was going to look like this giant pier or airport landing strip... I had no idea what I was looking at was actually the top of many blocky buildings. So I was very refreshed when at least 60% jade sea were open areas instead of labyrinth shit layout (and still pissed off 40% of it was wasted on grassland islands without even giant mountains)
Only thing I can appreciate about GW2 is that it finally put its environment to good use and you didn't feel like an elephant ghost stuck to the ground and the environment yelling at you "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH ME, DON'T YOU DARE INTERACT WITH ME, OH YOU WANT UP? NO UPSIES FOR YOU >:( "

Join [LGIT] instead, it's the biggest and most active alliance in GW1 that basically kept this game alive. They fund the Chinese New Years feast events every year.
The only "problem" is that they're not the best experts at endgame content since they have so many people coming in that haven't played in 15 years.

so you basically only need open world builds
You get 3 build slots and only 2 equipment slots, so you're already being pushed to buy a third one from the get go.
Each class has three elite specs and most of them have more than one build. You can instantly tweak your build based on the situation but that defeats the purpose of build templates.
Now, one equipment + one build slot cost almost as much as a whole character slot, meaning you're getting ripped off big time if you want more slots for your main.
Also the overall interface in GW2 has been cancer for over a decade and the devs refuse to even let you customise it beyond "show/hide this UI element in combat". It's unbelievable how much of a technical downgrade GW2 is compared to its predecessor.

The Shiro'ken were a more directly controllable minion type than the Afflicted which were a demonic corruption working through Shiro's fricked up spirit.
Afflicted weren't really serving Shiro or something he consciously decided to create, they were just a byproduct of him wandering around. His spirit was so toxic and radiating so much evil energies that just coming near him corrupted you into a mindless blob of meat. Of course he took advantage of this and spread some chaos, but Shiro'ken were the actual army he wanted to create to serve him.

I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't get into Guild Wars. It was the only MMO whose golden age I missed (I played UO at launch, FFXI until CoP, WoW until WOTLK, DAOC at launch, etc etc), so I got it a while back. I was completely filtered by the janky movement and dated combat. Even worse, I've been playing GW2 for like 3 years and really like it despite its flaws. Forgive me for my sins.

It's just typical MMO fare from that era and lacks fluidity. The openness when it comes to builds and having multiple classes is really cool though, unfortunately it's just not fun for me to play. And yes, I realize the irony because some of the aforementioned games were very similar in regards to combat (DAOC especially), but I have no doubt I'd feel the same way as I do towards GW1 if I played those games today. That's why I said I missed the boat; I probably would have loved GW1 had I played it at release.

Wealth required to fully deck yourself out in GW is nothing. Basic max armor is cheap. Max weapons are cheap. Only by equipping your 7 heroes with sup vigors and sup dom runes you'll need some actual money but that's still far away from need riches.

GW1's dual class + skill system hasn't been duplicated in other games yet so if you like to mess with builds and party compositions it's definitely worth it.

It was amazing back in the day but I don't know whether it still has the player count to truly live and breathe right now, plus I imagine the remaining playerbase must be made up of hardcore fans who know the game in and out so the entire community has to be different. The times have changed too, when I played it nearly 20 years ago or some shit just being able to play together with so many other people was mind-boggling and extremely appealing coming from a perspective where MP used to be a special occasion when you have someone over, take part in some LAN event or go to an internet cafe.
I want to mod bannerlord, so that the world is as big as LOTRO and its all just GW1 again.

The ultimate sadness I feel towards GW1 is that, generally, it was the MMO equivalent of Quake3/UnrealTournament99: it demonstrated that a fundamental basis in creating a functional, fun PvP system in an MMO genre could then be used to create a fun and engaging PvE system; the opposite is just not true, which is why there hasn't been a (popular) MMO since that has had good PvP.

Since it's a EotN armor you'll have to reach rank 5 with the Ebon Vanguard before you get to craft it though, which means you'll have to go through the entire Eotn Campaign at least once on your Rit
Don't forget to fill in the book to redeem it and get your points
Finish EotN campaign and turn in the storybook and you should be set pretty much.

I have unironically bought the Complete Edition three days ago because of some anon making a similar thread recently. played about 10 hours, currently level 11. Made some returning player friend and we did most of the tutorial zone with him, good stuff.
I do have my gripes with the combo profession system though. I picked Mesmer as main job and Necromancer as secondary job, I tried around various Mesmer builds but I seem to be doing much better by just dunking all points into Blood Magic (Necromancer). Do you have any recommendation builds/tips as a mesmer early game? I currently just use 7 Blood/Death abilities and 1 Inspiration ability which shields me from fire damage and gives me energy when I get hit
If you're playing Prophecy, mesmers take some time to develop, you still don't have too much Fast-cast points and the nature of the class makes it naturally more useful against tougher high level enemies rather than low level shrimps who die too fast
I know most of the useful Domination damage spells come from Faction and Nightfall campaigns though, so you'll probably have to suffer until you reach Lion's Arch and travel around to unlock more skills
I am doing the first campaign, but I lowkey wanna try the new classes when I do the other two campaigns because they look unique as frick especially Paragon/Dervish. When you go for Nightfall or Factions stories are you forced to create new character? Or can you respec?
If you want to fully play other classes you have to make another character
You can bring your main Mesmer to NF and Faction, and you can unlock the new classes as secondary, but you won't have access to the class' identity attribute since it will be just as a secondary for your main

Do not attempt assassin endgame content, not because assassin is not(he's too Ganker for the job) but because as a tank you have to learn you have to LEARN A LOT, how to pull, ball enemies, learn every dungeon layout, what to do, when to yell at your DPS to AoE those suckers. Blame it on the ping, learn to not get hit by enemies rather than relying on +75% blocks and armour. You'll turn into an elitist.
Mesmer atm has been the meta since 2012. Everyone wants DPS and DPS is braindead easy to play.
Monk again requires some brains to play, not as much as the tank, but still a bit of brains.
It depends on the campaign
Faction is extremely alt-friendly : you level up fast, get your bonus attribute point quests on the tutorial island, and you access the main HUB on the continent with the endgame-ready armor sellers right after you finish the tutorial
NF is a little less so alt friendly because NF is full of dumb tedium : shitty non-cutscenes dialogues that you have to wait through, title grind, lots of annoying back and forth....
Prophecy is either extremely alt-friendly if you know someone who can ferry you to the end of the game with a runner character and if you have enough cash to straight buy the best armor from Droknar and skill tomes to get an optimized build, or extremely slow if you have to re-do the entire campaign from scratch.
I paid $240 to have all 10 classes unlocked with all EotN finished + the 4 PVE titles. Guy told me "listen if you want me to catch all 300 elite skills that'll cost you in the $700+ range"
I was relatively happy with the account he built for me outside of the fact a bunch of DoA wasn't unlocked for all characters, but again only assassins and mesmers belong in DoA, which he did.
He basically min-max optimized it. In that $240 he also had to buy me a shit load of consets cause I told him "speedclear ready account" I NEVER EVER wanted to ever hear "we already have a tank for this, we need a tank for that, you don't have the skills needed" so I got all my elite tomes, all the necessary skills to do end game. Shit was cash.
With that being said as a depressed crypto entrepeneur I ended up only doing Nick Sets once a week and treated GW almost as a job. Doing the anniversary weapons for April gave me some motivation to try all classes.
Warrior is still fricking fun to play with. No aftercast delay, no accidental interrupting yourself like with the elementalist.
and Derv ... derv at first feels weak until he magically spikes the living shit out of everything through a series of combos my brain cannot comprehend + his ability to self heal unlike most melee classes. Derv feels like warrior and assassin had a child or a ranger's stances. Assassin also has some powerful self-healing abilities compared to warriors.

I'm going to tell you the reality of the "multiple classes" BS. Only very few skills that do not depend on attribute can be combined properly with another class. Skills that do not take a lot of points to be effective.
Even as a lvl 20 (with 2 extra quests that give you +20 points) you still feel like you're better off going PURE.
Secondary classing is for gimmick builds and PvP such as a secondary ranger can use charm animal to get a pet companion. (unfortunately you need to waste ANOTHER ability on your skillbar in case your pet ever dies during your match in order to revive him. Normal ressurection skills do not work on pets/allies/minions).
Gimmick builds can be fun, EXTREMELY FUN, just not capable of beating metas.

I don't know if they removed it, but back when I made my Mesmer, the end of the tutorial area was an arena fight against another randomly selected player, and I got set up against an obvious newbie Ele spamming Flare.
I still feel dirty about what I did that day. The first taste is always the best.

I remember getting bodied by a mm necro the first time as a level seven ranger. I dont know how the frick i functioned in pvp as a moronic kid all i knew was to interrupt casters.
I really liked stuff like that in GW, it introduced you to PvP early and later would incentivize you to participate in lower level PvP arenas as you played the game, before having you move on to the max level stuff.

But technically the game is really good, the mechanics, the artstyle is quite literally perfect, the animations, looks very professional and high budget with the voice acting etc... very soulful MMO
Only thing i found shitty was the UI visual design in particular the HUD, especially the health bar, looks fricking shit and could be polished more with ornaments, frames etc...

They can't program for shit, GW2 is still living off the mechanics laid out during development. Every new "feature" is pretty much a heavily edited copy of something already in the game, and after the layoffs from a couple of years ago there is no one left who even knows how the code looks like, much less how it works.
The last programmer to quit was a QA guy who got "promoted" when every other coder left and spent years doing a team's worth of development until he had a nervous breakdown and left the company.
The current one is some other promoted QA engineer who introduced a graphic setting to filter out some invasive vfx. Said filter didn't work on release and made party content almost impossible while not hiding the actually invasive vfx.
You could pay a dozen of pajeets to make GW3 and it would be a better product than anything nu-ArenaNet can make from scratch.

the Effect LoD toggle is still broken to this day and hides some really fricking important spell effects in PvP like the Harbinger shroud 5 big CC spell, nothing quite like getting floated for 3 seconds because you accidentally touched an invisible AoE.

It's "bad" for PvE in the current year of full hero parties because you don't have a lot of direct control over a battle unless you go full damage dealing smite in which case why play Monk in the first place.
Overall, Monk is one of the core pillars of why Guild Wars was such a good game.
