Valve is a tech lolbert company why the frick did you think they hated AI?

They hated the ambiguous legality of it. This was always the case.

They are making it a requirement that if ai tools are used in any part of development that it has to be disclosed to valve. This us basically the same as ai not being allowed because they seperating it from everything else and if you like they'll likely delist the game

this is an entirely reasonable stance to make - the only gay part is disallowing live generation in porn games

Probably because it could accidentally allow e-girls to be generated or something.
Not that I think e-girl porn should be disallowed either.

I guarantee you what happened is that a bunch of major studios called them and told them that their games were going to use AI whether or not steam allowed it, so they had to back down. Every single major video game company is already using AI, and the smaller ones will soon get there too. It's moronic to not use a tool that is available to you to make game development easier. Even if all western companies refuse to use AI, companies in China/Russia/etc. will use it and then our companies are left at a blatant disadvantage.

It also just feels hypocritical to me that automating away most jobs is seen as okay, but just not these ones. Why is it okay to automate away factory jobs but not art?

The factory owner who designed the schematics gave the okay for the automated machines to replace the humans. The artist did not give the okay for Rajesh to train a LORA of his art. I don't care if either lose their jobs, personally.

Niche scenario. Ask nicely next time.

So because it exists, you can legally use it anywhere? Go try that luck with any non public domain Disney character, I'm sure the mouse will love that and not sue you into oblivion.

You can't "use it" but you can certainly learn from it. You do that implicitly, all the time.

              >You can't "use it" but you can certainly learn from it. You do that implicitly, all the time

                Anonymous

Tracing means you're using the material itself in the process of drawing. AI doesn't do that.

The "AI" doesn't learn it's a glorified search engine you dumb indian.

If AI models really were just a giant database of content they would be massive and impossible to handle. You can't fit billions of images in a few gigabytes. Thankfully people who are much smarter than you have already ruled that AI training is fair use.

                >heh AI merely uses its experience of seeing and creating art to make more art

                Anonymous

Do you really think it just stitches images together like you would do in Photoshop? Try it yourself. There's no easy way to explain this but the short answer is that an the AI model is a giant compressed dataset (intelligence is compression) that recreates images from first principles rather than encoded data like a JPG or PNG image would. An example, the best way to compress an image of a penguin is learning the concept of a penguin and drawing a new version yourself along with some basic information like "it's looking to the left" and "it's snowy outside". How the diffusion process works is that you give it random noise and ask it to denoise the image until it recreates the concepts you prompted it with. This works and it creates a new, completely original image that has never been seen before.

I think Valve put their lawyers on an AI crash course the past year.
They obviously didnt mind the MUH ETHICAL implications of AI but they were definitely werent going to ush that legal minefield.

If you read the post, a LOT of the policies involves passing on the buck to the devs and customers like always. So if the law gets spicy Valve can shit on the AI devs instead.
