I don't think that scene was supposed to be comical at all, since it's characters forcing themselves to laugh in dire times, that's like character forcing himself to smile, but 10x times worse. But I do think it's super funny to look at even with full context, due to way it was directed and voiced. Hearing that "A, HA, HA, HA" just brings a smile on my face every time I hear it. I think it may be a shitshow, but I respect it for it's goofy sincerety, at least.

It's really easy to "fake laugh" more convincingly than that though, which is why the deliberate fakeness comes off so wrong. It's like the actors vastly underestimate what a non actor would be capable of doing in that situation and felt the need to exaggerate that.
