I've work in a field where I have to talk to dozens upon dozens of people every day, new people coming and going, from literally every level of economic status and racial/cultural background. Years of it, to the point I've worked with likely thousands of unique individuals. I've seen nearly every kind of medical/psychological condition and disability you can think of.
I've never seen someone with vitiligo. I know it exists and certainly isn't the rarest disease out there, but with the way game devs treat it, you'd think it was some widespread occurrence that needs attention brought to it. You see more characters with it than you do people in goddamn wheelchairs or missing limbs (from accidents or otherwise), which is are way more common and in need of recognition in terms of the issues people face.
I understand it's an easy way to score some brownie points with groups out there crying for representation since you just throw some different colored patches of skin on an already existing character. But jesus fricking christ, you'd think it a third of the population has the disease with how common it's represented/available in character creation. Fricking lazy ass devs can't even make the effort to represent properly diverse populations; they always go for the same shit.

Honestly. Something I've been thinking about for a while now. Is if somebody would just write some real shit about old myths. Just some real ass shit. Just some real ass human shit. Just use the myths as a basis to write REAL people with real flaws and shit, with actual feelings, beliefs, ideas. What would a "God" really be like if they were effectively a "human". How would they look at human beings, as a reflection of themselves? Would some be jealous of the fact that human beings can die? Would some feel like the responsibilities of a God is something that was thrust upon them unfairly? Arbitrarily? What of love? There have obviously been Greek stories of Gods falling in love with mortals, but it's typically just generic "omg beautiful woman so beautiful and oh, their son is going to have some tragic life or some shit".
Would some God's aware of that fact view their love as a curse? As if they're undeserving of an experience of love? Of course some God's would get tired of simply solely making love with their other Gods. I mean this is basically the point of the story with Persephone, but it's never delved into much beyond "Hades is a psycho that kidnapped a woman and she hates that bruh".
It would be so interesting to make these mythical people, both Gods, Heroes, Monsters, etc. Be real people, based on the theme of their myth, or frick it, just make over all of it.
But the world is shit, and boring, and shallow, and worthless and everybody and everything sucks, and so there can never truly be anything good about this world.
I'm sure there's a lame young adult series that covers exactly what you're talking about. In fact, the Percy Jackson books probably explore a lot of that stuff.

Why do games keep shilling this Vitiligo meme. I grew up in nyc seeing hundreds of new people every day on the train and bus and I think I saw one person that had it over like 10 years of commuting.
I normally don't give a shit about any kind of portrayals of people in whatever form, but I will never understand why devs CONSTANTLY make characters with that skin condition. I've work in a field where I have to talk to dozens upon dozens of people every day, new people coming and going, from literally every level of economic status and racial/cultural background. Years of it, to the point I've worked with likely thousands of unique individuals. I've seen nearly every kind of medical/psychological condition and disability you can think of.
I've never seen someone with vitiligo. I know it exists and certainly isn't the rarest disease out there, but with the way game devs treat it, you'd think it was some widespread occurrence that needs attention brought to it. You see more characters with it than you do people in goddamn wheelchairs or missing limbs (from accidents or otherwise), which is are way more common and in need of recognition in terms of the issues people face.
I understand it's an easy way to score some brownie points with groups out there crying for representation since you just throw some different colored patches of skin on an already existing character. But jesus fricking christ, you'd think it a third of the population has the disease with how common it's represented/available in character creation. Fricking lazy ass devs can't even make the effort to represent properly diverse populations; they always go for the same shit.

As big as the gaming industry is, there's a lot of overlap when it comes to staff. As an example, one of my co-workers has worked for Nintendo, Sony, and Sega. I have another that's worked for both Bethesda and Capcom.
It wouldn't surprise me if all these vitiligo characters happens because of one person with vitiligo landing on their feet in all these companies where these characters crop up.
I could see that honestly. In the same way a writer or artists might use the same tropes/style in what they make, I could see someone who just really likes representing that specific condition being prevalent. It also helps that, like I said, it's an easy thing to implement. Just throw some patches of color on someone's skin and you're done.
