I think both have their merits and stand as equals in my eyes. SH2 for story/atmosphere and SH1 for horror/level design.
SH1 had better combat, some semblance of an over world to explore with the town, and better level design. In general, I think SH2 is carried hard carried by its story, themes, and atmosphere, but gameplay wise it is a complete downgrade.
The combat is basically the same among the first 3 games. It just feels nicer in 2 and 3 because SH1 usually plays at like 10fps

Yeah. The main draw was always exploring cool enviroments, music, art in general. Making combat overly elaborate would just serve as distraction. SH was simpler than RE (it's predecessor) "gameplay" wise because they wanted it that way.
Doesn't look very elaborate, you just point and shoot, guns are slow to aim and have low fire rates, melee has huge wind-up animatons and is very cumbersome. Even more than OG where you could use the the pipe to quickly swing and stunlock enemies.

Yes it was.
No inventory management, no ammo management (you can shoot every enemy in the game and still have plenty left), and all the extra movement actions are completely useless, since you need to stay still and stun lock everything.
Once you get the hammer in SH1, you're basically immortal.
There's not even managing cure items with combining like there is in RE.

Honstly my only interest in this remake is out of morbid curiosity, I knew when they announced it that it was going to be shit, because Bloober Team has never made anything good in 5+ attempts at making a horror game.
Team Bloober was perfect for this because they made a bunch of atmospheric haunted house games akin to PT and SH2 is basically that but in third person with extremely barebones and downright shitty combat. Them copying RE2R's combat isn't a bad thing unless they either make it way too easy or way to annoying and hard to run past shit.

Played this game for the first time, no I'm not a zoomer, just not blinded by nostalgia. I'll just say it's good but certainly no masterpiece. 7/10 at best. It's elevated by its story and music but the game itself is a slog. MUCH room for improvement in the remake.
