I think people like the idea of trauma bonding. Just the idea that someone understands your worst insecurities because they lived through them themselves. But what makes this idea bad is that you have to actually move past them. Otherwise you're just two anxiety riddled people paranoid at the world around you until you get paranoid at each other but by that point you have no other source of comfort.
Mercedes is the preferable option for this sort of thing with Dimitri because unlike Marianne, Mercedes is able to put Dimitri's trauma into perspective. The thing that separates Dimitri from someone like her brother is that Dimitri has an end goal in mind. He's killing so that the killing can stop which is what separates Dimitri from the real monsters.
For Marianne a dark horse pairing is Ferdinand. Because Ferdinand tells Marianne is that's better to accept her circumstances and change them for the better rather than drowning in her own sorrow. Doubly based because Ferdinand practices what he preaches. Even if he loses everything, he never loses faith in himself and his vision of what a perfect noble is. And it works, it contributes to Marianne's more confident outlook after the time skip.
The problem is Mariane has the weakest trama out of all 3h's depressed pairings. That and Flayn literally went through the same shit of her family getting fricked and actually gives him his taste back. Mariane brings nothing to the table for Dimitri and two depressed people getting together is very bad.

I think this is the biggest problem with how she's written. Bernadetta is mostly treated as a joke or an annoyance to be tolerated. But like... she was legit abused by her father. Her best friend was an assassin sent to kill her by a political opponent that by happenstance went soft before being beaten and chased off by her father. Bernadetta has a reason to believe that the world is out to get her even if she doesn't hit the top 10 of sad backstories.
By contrast, Marianne's depression is mostly caused by superstition. Yes her parents died but she not sad that her parents are dead. Only that her parents dying for reasons no one can explain serves as proof that her crest makes her dangerous. Even as Linhardt is telling her that makes zero sense. Raphael is in the same boat as her. Is he secretly a bearer of the Crest of Maurice? Or was it just bad luck?
Nothing other than her messy hair indicates she doesn't take care of herself in part 1. So everyone assumes that to mean if she doesn't care of her visible appearance then she wouldn't trim herself either.
