halo had 2 good games and gears only 1. same thing happens to every series - the first few games are good, then they fart out pointless sequels that have to add new stuff because theyre sequels, but the new stuff is always unnecessary and damages the core gameplay. the new games just get progressively worse, and only sell because its now a "franchise" with brand recognition.
