keyboard is for tight controls, gamepad is for comfort and analog inputs
you can mimic one with the other but usually they require some kind of specialized input method (keyboards need analog keys, gamepads need gyro)

In 2010, we went from handheld sales drastically slowing because of the subsequent Smartphone take over, then the 3DS and Vita releasing with both selling drastically less than their predecessors due to the mobile gaming surge then around 2016 people realized mobile gaming is shit, then the Switch released to massive success and now we have giant portables with PS4 like power taking over both the console and handheld market.
Now I just wonder how long this fad will last before its inevitably replaced by something else

Naw, the death to all gaming will be mobile in the end. Phones are just getting more and more powerful now (especially androids).
Even Diablo IV turned out to be a massive success after gaymerhomosexuals screeched about it not being on PC at launch. It STILL won, which proved to not just Blizzard, but everyone else that, yeah.... we CAN put our games on mobile and those moron chuds will buy it.

this. i have emulators on my galaxy note 20 ulra and a frick ton of ROMS on my microSD. i can literally connect to my TV with Dex and connect a BT controller and play everything up to PS2.

It's literally a PC with a built in controller. Plug it into a dock and there is no functional diference.

I can't afford a new PC, I bought a Steam Deck for less than 1/3 the price of a good rig and it runs new games better than my old desktop. If prices won't go down I'll be happy to stick with 720p handheld gaming.
