Most of the best Pokémon in previous games were available earlier than they were later.

This, the problem is that Unova is incredibly linear and the first few hours in the game is just hordes of Pidove, Lillipup and Purrloin, so when you have 151 new Pokemon, the distribution of good shit is going to be condensed somewhere at some point. In other gens the release of good shit is less staggered, Sinnoh gives you access to Shinx, Budew and Shellos pretty early, Johto has Mareep, Geodude, Gastly, and plenty of kantomons, Hoenn has lots of variety since there's a good amount of biomes within the firs thalf of the game

i feel like people exaggerate how bad BW's earlygame is, and it probably has to do with other games spoiling them. lillipup is perfectly fine, the monkeys get some good moves if you wait to evolve them, zebstrika and swoobat are serviceable, the judo men are at least good in the short term, and seismitoad is my fricking bro.

          >BW isnt bad, it's just that the other games are too good

I don't care what the monkeys can do, their presence counts as two negative pokemon each because of how stupid their design is

I think they should have frontloaded BW a bit more design wise. None of the early route designs are that good and doesn't get you hyped to train and evolve the mons you get. Gen 4 had some cool designs available early on, people gladly dragged their Bite/Leer/Charge/Thunder Fang Luxray all the way to the post game just because it looked cool. No one is doing that with Watchog or Unfezant.

Yeah, I think the only early game mon I'd want is Drilbur, so getting to Route 4 is a breath of fresh air

This route was so uninspired, like most of the game I just blew through it. "Wow cool sand hippo, cool lizard!" Gen V+ was a mistake.

You can say that about most routes. They rarely have a gimmick that is not just walking past shit and going to it later with an HM.

They all blend together in mediocrity.

This route actually changes amongst all 4 versions

I love how people like to shit talk about HGSS distribution, but at least in HGSS you can find good Pokemon if you actually fricking look. With BW there are hardly any good options to choose from until maybe after Castelia, and even then none are good except maybe the fossils and desert mons. All the others are either shit, you can't get until late game, or are way too tedious to evolve.

Gen 1 gives you Nidoking and Gyarados before the 2nd gym

      >nidoking
you can frick nidoking's movepool up if you use the moon stone early. is nidoking great with tms? yeah, but that's true of almost every single pokemon in the context of those games. as far as gyarados.. the idea the game "gives" you gyarados, considering how much grinding is needed to evolve magikarp, is a very poor characterization of the situation

Having a Pokemon that strong early on was refreshing for me

It only takes like an hour

For what it was worth, I like the Pokemon you get here, they're certainly better than pretty much 80% of the Pokemon you can get earlier than this point. Darumaka hits like a truck jacked on steroids and Darmanitan is far for being the most offensive design in gen 5, Krookodile looks pretty cool and is a pretty good sweeper as well and Scrafty is a Black person, but it's at least reliable. Gamefreak did a shit job at handling the Pokemon distribution in gen 5, many are locked to post-game for moronic "reasons", many evolve way too late to ever see use in your team, looking at you Braviary and Mandibuzz, and the early routes are plagued with mediocrity and shit, I love Stoutland and I will always remember getting a shiny Lillipup on Christmas morning as my first wild encounter when I first played White, I love the fossils and I hate Gamefreak for locking them to post-game in BW 2, I also like Drilbur and Excadrill quite a lot, but past that? What is there? Pidove sucks, Patrat is useless, Leavanny is cute but it's typing is a sick joke, the monkeys are ugly and unappealing, you can't get Scolipede until level 30 and it's prevos suck ass, so that's a waste and I'm sure as hell not going to use Sawk and Throh.
