Nah, Contra is piss easy when you know what you are doing since you just can obliterate most things before they can force you to dodge on reaction, leaving mostly static patterns you can deal with the same way every single time.
Bosses in Cuphead on the otherhand overstay their welcome and have way more erratic patterns, their bullets I mean, not their cycles. >t. has every Contra badge on Retro Achievements and beat Contra 3 as a 5 year old

You get the lives you lost after finiahing the boss/level
You don't have to restart the entire game if you run out of lives
the game is heavily scripted with a shit ton of telegraphing so grind it out, get a little muscle memory and youre golden. when you beat the level you'll actually feel accomplished unless youre a life hating vappa

If it's beatable then it's fair.
I find it hard because controls are just very uncomfortable to me.
You can change them, on any version, and switch the buttons around completely.
The main problem is how uncomfortable it is to perform angle shots.
