Sonic's old home on South island canonically existed in all the adventure era games, and debatably still exists even in fricking unleashed.
Of course it existed in Adventure. The retcon of the canon that existed from 1 through the trilogy, the adventure games, heroes, shadow, battle and the advance series happened in 06. After which no game has had plot elements that dealt with elements introduced in previous games.
Actually '06 only canonically retconned itself, and the events of Soleanna and forfeited canon status to Rush/Rivals

Honestly, I really like the idea of Eggman pulling some huge elaborate scheme like this, but the idea that the original characters we came to love are literally fricking DEAD. It'd be much better if the real Sonic was put in stasis after SA2 and that way a clear divide is made between classic Sonic (Sonic 1 - Adventure 2) and Modern Sonic (Sonic Advance/Heroes and on).
If they just killed off Modern Sonic at the ending (noble sacrifice), they could honestly put the multitude of shit games behind them and start anew, but this is a pipe dream of course and I'm sure Sonic Team will do everything in their power to make this whole shitshow as shitty as possible.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the game. I always felt Sonic could use some super simple yet flashy combat that keeps the feeling of speed without having to focus on running and platforming. That way you're slowing the player down so they don't blitz through the game, but it still feels fun. Just so long as it doesn't get as repetitive as the Werehog bits.
